Pokespe Week Day 7
Happy Moment
I really like the scene after the final confrontation in the Yellow arc. The dust has settled, the environments have been restored, the chaos has been put in order, and finally, Yellow has achieved her mission of finding Red. This is also a really great moment because it’s the first time all four Kanto dexholders meet. We get to see how they interact in peacetime, which is always nice. Since we rarely get those sorts of slowdowns in spe, it’s great to see one like this. This also laid the first canonical seeds for Specialshipping (my favorite ship), so I’m also a bit biased toward it because of that. All in all, a great conclusion to one of my favorite arcs.
PokeSpe Week - Day 8 : Free Day - Uh…
Thinking back about it, it really was PokeSpe that brought me back to the Pokemon franchise. By the time the fourth generation rolled around, I could safely say I had officially fallen out it. I didn’t get the DS when it came out (my latest consoles were a N64 and a Game Boy Advance) and I was barely even aware that the Diamond and Pearl games released when they did. School and studying had taken up all my time, ensuring that I’d never be able to catch the anime on tv again.
But I still could read scanlations in between my schoolwork, and one way or another, I came across PokeSpe online. I’d already found Viz’s ‘Best of’ at Barnes and Noble, but its disjointedness didn’t do much for me. Being able to properly read the RGB chapter in its entirety had me promptly falling in love with the series, reminding me of all the fun I had playing the first generation games back when I was younger. I read everything that was available at the time, up to the DP chapter. (Dang, since I didn’t play the DP games, PokeSpe was what introduced me to the Sinnoh region.)
And thanks to catching up on PokeSpe as it came out, I found out about the upcoming HGSS games, and I really wanted to be able to explore the Johto and Kanto regions again. So I saved up to buy a DS and a Soul Silver cartridge. I had a real blast, and I’ve been hooked again ever since.
Heck, I could say PokeSpe brought me back into video games in general; I had gotten my hands on a console once more, might as well look into some more recent games…
Pokespe Week Day 8
Free Day
I suppose the best thing I can do for today is to recount how I came to be a fan of Pokespe.
It all started when I was 9 years old. I was browsing through the kids’ section of a local Barnes and Noble, when a particular book caught my eye. It was the Best of Red collection of spe. I didn’t know anything about the manga at this point, and I only bought it with my limited allowance because I liked Pokémon and I thought the idea of a comic based on it was pretty cool. I read through the book, thought it was decent (though it had some plot holes (my small brain couldn’t figure out why there were flashbacks to events not in that particular book)), and put it down for a while.
About a year later, I was looking through he same section and came across the Best of Yellow collection. I remembered vaguely liking the first one, so I got this one as well. I was surprised to find that there was actual continuity with the first one I’d read, but with so much missing, I couldn’t really make the connection that there was an ongoing series.
Then, about five years after that, in a hotel room traveling with my high school baseball team, I lay awake surfing wikis about Pokémon. By random chance, I happened on the article for Yellow, and, remembering the books I’d read, I clicked on it. Almost immediately, I got caught by complete surprise when the article started referring to Yellow as “she” and “her.” The Best of collection had, for some odd reason, failed to include the biggest twist of the whole arc.
And that was all it took to get me hooked. After recovering from that initial surprise, I read through the summaries of the RGB and Yellow arcs, realizing everything I’d missed out on because I’d only seen the collections. That was also when I noticed that Red and Yellow seemed, from the summaries and screenshots, at least, to have a pretty good amount of connection to each other. I learned there was a name for that relationship, Specialshipping, and that’s how I fell in love with my otp.
Then, after a few years of browsing various fanfiction websites for Specialshipping content (I stand by it that I’ve read every Specialshipping fanfiction there is in existence), and finally getting around to reading the full RGBY stories, I found the Amino for Pokespe, joined, and decided to stake my claim in the community with my first Pokespe fanfiction, “Before Alola.” A while after that, I joined the Pokespe discord, affectionately referred to as “Specord,” and became an active member there as well. Finally, just a few months ago, I joined Tumblr for the sole purpose of further exploring the spe community.
And that’s pretty much everything up until now. I’m really looking into the future of this manga and my involvement in its community, especially since it has always been lurking in the corners of my life, even in my youth. I hope we can see my favorite character, Yellow, back in the manga soon (maybe for a Rainbow Rocket arc?), but if not, fanfiction is enough. I’m going to be beginning my most ambitious Pokespe project yet soon, and I really hope it will turn out well.
Mostly, though, I just hope this community will continue to grow and thrive, and that maybe some other little kid will stumble across a collection or volume of Pokespe in their local book store and come to be a fan, just like I did.
PokeSpe Week - Day 7 : Happy or Sad Moment - Black and White’s Reunion

I still can’t believe we had to wait longer than White for this moment. Was it worth it?

Title: A Ripple in Time
Summary: It happened; Ruby managed to use Celebi to travel back in time, trying to stop the biggest tragedy of his life. And while he succeeded, the alternate future he created might be even worse.

PokeSpe Week - Day 6 : Relationship - Black and White
(sobs) I love these two dreamers so much…
These two really do have a lovely relationship. They respect and admire each other, they honestly try to to better themselves for the other’s sake, they use their own dreams to boost the other’s, gaaah. They’re so good to each other. I love them to bits.
For Pokespe Week Day 6: Relationship or Friendship.
I composed this theme for Specialshipping a few days ago, meant to accompany the themes I did for Red and Yellow (it uses motifs from both). I know this technically breaks the rule of not making entries in advance, but I like this song so much I wanted to submit it anyway.
This song is meant to celebrate the relationship Red and Yellow, and I could think of no better way to do that than by combining the motifs from each of their respective themes in a piano duet. Part of me imagines they’d be the ones playing it together, but they probably don’t know how to play haha.
PokeSpe Week - Day 5 : Villain or Villainous Team - Neo-Team Plasma Colress
He’s an *sshole, but ooh boy is he a fun one to watch. His mannerisms and expressions are always over the top and he takes such joy in his work and oh my god he’s trying to kill everyone in the name of science get him away from the controls. You just gotta love those mad scientists with blue and orange morality…
Pokespe Week Day 5: Favorite Villian: Giovanni
The reason why I like Giovanni most of all has most to do with his initial few appearances.
When Giovanni first showed up in the manga, he was pretending to be a kindly old man who needed help through a cave. He pulled this act off flawlessly until Red defeated a group of attacking Pokémon and left. Only after he was alone, we saw the mask slip off and he showed his true colors by cruelly finishing off the helpless Pokémon. This sets him up clearly as an evil antagonist, and the manga follows up that arc with his defeat near the end. But it also sets him up as a trickster. He had Red completely fooled. He can lie and get away with it.
This carries over into his next appearance in the Yellow arc, where he assists Yellow in the battle against Lance. This would seem to be a reform arc, but because of how he was set up in the first arc, it’s not that simple. He may be appearing to help the side of good, but no matter what he says, the reader always has in the back of his or her head that initial deception. Because of that, readers can never trust that he means what he says. We never know if he’s being honest either way. At any point, whether he’s doing good or evil, he could be pretending.
Unlike many antagonists in the manga, Giovanni works not through sheer power, but through manipulation and trickery. He misleads even the readers. This also makes him the perfect foil to the main character. When we see Red, we know what he’s thinking at every step of the way. Moreover, we know, for the most part, that what he says is the truth. But both characters use clever strategy, not power, in battle, meaning both have the potential to use their wits to deceive others. But Giovanni does, while Red doesn’t. That’s the clear dividing line between the protagonist and antagonist.
Giovanni was written as the perfect villain for the RGB arc, and has been set up to be the perfect villain in any future arc in which he appears. That’s why he’s my favorite villain in Pokespe.

Pokespe Week, day 6 - Relationship
🅱️ill
Ack, I forgot to hit post on this yesterday!
This is my post for #pokespeweek day 2. My favorite non-Pokédex holder has to be Bill. I just really like this down-to-earth nutty professor guy. He’s so calm and levelheaded even in the midst of all the chaos of the RGBY arcs, even when under direct fire by Lorelei (who was trying to straight up kill him, mind you). On top of that, he’s a bit of a genius, collaborating with some of the best scientific minds on the planet (except for the professors, of course), to create a program that literally digitizes living creatures for storage, and does it all with such a low cost that it can be used for free! Not to mention he’s one of the only non-professors to be confirmed as having a college education, which is really cool.
