Colin turned his head toward Portia, slightly tense. “Reading can be as formative as writing, Mrs. Featherington. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the books that shaped me.”

Philippa nodded vigorously. “Yes! I once read half a book about how to bake cakes without flour. I didn’t finish it, but it was very inspiring.”

Prudence burst out laughing. “Was that the one that exploded in the oven?!”

“It didn’t explode!” Philippa replied indignantly. “It just… creatively fell apart.”
