Le son du jour #58 : Dustin Zahn - Illusory

Prolifique producteur depuis le début des années 2000, Dustin Zahn est l’un des producteurs techno américains de la seconde vague qui a su faire son trou en Europe et dans le monde. Spécialisé dans une musique techno minimaliste basée sur des boucles répétitives entêtantes, Dustin Zahn est aussi un directeur de label puisqu’il a fondé en 2004 Enemy, basé à Berlin, le label pourvoit les mêmes codes avec des artistes reconnus comme Truncate, Joel Mull ou Minilogue. C’est d’ailleurs sur son propre label que Dustin Zahn vient de publier un nouveau maxi intitulé Juvenoia, mot-valise inventé par David Finkelhor à partir des mots juvénile et paranoïa, un néologisme définissant la peur et l’hostilité d’une génération à une autre génération plus jeune.

Specializing in a minimalist techno music based on repetitive loops, Dustin Zahn is also a director of label since he founded in 2004 Enemy, based in Berlin, the label provides the same codes with recognized artists like Truncate, Joel Mull or Minilogue. It is also on his own label that Dustin Zahn has just published a new maxi entitled Juvenoia, a suitcase invented by David Finkelhor from the words juvenile and paranoia, a neologism defining the fear and hostility of a generation to another younger generation.

L’EP de le semaine #11 : Sikka Rymes - Seh Dem Bad

La Jamaïque et le Mexique se rencontre à nouveau grâce à Bokeh Version et Duppy Gun, enfantant de la dancehall du futur. Le prometteur mc Sykka Rymes s’associe à nouveau avec le producteur basé à Mexico Genesis Hull sur un maxi aux sonorités et aux rythmes originaux, une sorte d’aperçu de la musique du futur. Les productions de Genesis Hull transportent Sikka Rymes hors de toutes concurrences et de toutes comparaisons, détournant les codes et les genres. Car ici, rien de connu, ni dans le flow, ni dans les sonorités qui oscillent entre grime, dubstep, dancehall et bass music et quoi de mieux pour se mettre dans le bain que ce premier titre Seh Dem Bad qui ouvre l’EP, une définition parfaites des efforts du label Duppy Gun d’éléver le dancehall et même plus largement la musique jamaïcaine moderne à un autre niveau. 

EP of the week #11 : Sikka Rymes - Seh Dem Bad

Jamaica and Mexico meet again thanks to Bokeh Version and Duppy Gun, to give birth to the dancehall of the future. The promising mc Sikka Rymes is once again teaming with Mexico-based producer Genesis Hull creating orginal sounds and rhythms, a kind of preview of the music of the future. Genesis Hull productions transport Sikka Rymes out of all competition and comparisons, diverting codes and genres. Because here, nothing known, neither in the flow, nor in the sounds that oscillate between grime, dubstep, dancehall and bass music with the best example in this first track Seh Dem Bad which opens the EP, a perfect definition of the efforts of the label Duppy Gun to raise dancehall and even more widely modern Jamaican music to another level.

L’EP de la semaine #10 : Plaid - Maru/Recall

Le groupe anglais a su se réinventer avec régularité depuis sa création. Tourné vers une musique mélodique et savante, les deux londoniens ont su se démarquer de la vague IDM, en proposant une alternative. Soutenu par le label Warp dès leurs débuts, ils ont conservé cette éthique jusqu’à aujourd’hui et la sorti d’un maxi deux titres : Maru/Recall. Deux titres bien plus facile d’accès que leurs productions classiques et orientés club. Une musique techno où la mélodie est bien présente sur la face A, alors que Recall est un titre techno plus classique, tourné vers le rythme et la basse, le tout avec un soucis des détails dans la production fidèle à leurs précédents travaux. On en redemande.

L’EP of the week #10 : Plaid - Maru/Recall

The English group has been able to reinvent itself with regularity since its creation. Turned to a melodic and learned music, the two Londoners were able to stand out from the IDM wave, proposing an alternative. Supported by Warp from their beginnings, they have retained this ethic until today and released a two tracks EP: Maru / Recall. Two tracks much easier to access than their classic’s and morre club-oriented productions. A techno music where the melody is present on the A side, while Recall is a more classic techno track, turned to rhythm and bass, all with a concern for details in production faithful to their previous work. We ask for more.

Le son du jour #57 : Cell Out - Transcendance

Avec l’Angleterre comme revendication première, on pourrait confondre le label Beatnik Boulevard avec un parti pro-Brexit. Si l’argument n’est pas ici politique, on pourrait l’assimiler toutefois à un certain protectionisme culturel. Crée en 2017, le label a pour mission de promouvoir les artistes anglais, avec sur les trois premières sorties Appleblim, Swayzak ou encore Komon. Après une absence prolongée, le label se réactive avec une signature toute fraiche : Cell Out. Une mixture, typiquement anglaise : un pudding regroupant dubstep, techno et sons rave des années 90. Pas de quoi révolutionner le monde de la musique électronique, mais une sortie tout à fait convenable qui s’intègre parfaitement à la mode actuelle.

With England as a first demand, we could confuse the Beatnik Boulevard label with a pro-Brexit party. If the argument is not political here, it could be assimilated to a certain cultural protectionism. Created in 2017, the label's mission is to promote English artists, with the first three releases from Appleblim, Swayzak or Komon. After a prolonged absence, the label reactivates himself with a brand new signature: Cell Out. A mixture, typically English: a pudding of dubstep, techno and rave sounds of the 90s. Not enough to revolutionize the world of electronic music, but a perfectly fitting output that fits perfectly with the current fashion.

Le son du jour #56 : Roza Terenzi - 3.I.Y

Un petit tour du monde résumé sur un maxi, c’est le pari de Katie Campbell. Australienne d’origine, la productrice tire son pseudonyme d’une astrophysicienen italienne, elle se retrouve aujourd’hui chez Dekmantel, avec un premier maxi et une première présence au festival du label hollandais cet été. Roza Terenzi fait une entrée remarquée sur la scène techno depuis l’année dernière durant laquelle elle a enchainé les sorties, chez Oscillate Tracks ou encore label australien Voyage. Le revival techno 90 y est surement pour beaucoup, cela étant ses productions originales, rythmiquement et aussi en terme d’éléments sonores placent Roza Terenzi dans les personnalités techno à suivre de près dans les prochains mois.

A short world tour summary on a maxi, this is the bet of Katie Campbell. Originally from Australia, the producer gets her pseudonym from an Italian astrophysicist, she finds herself today at Dekmantel, with a first EP and a first presence at the Dutch label festival this summer. Roza Terenzi has made a remarkable debut on the techno scene since last year, during which she published EPs on Oscillate Tracks and Australian Voyage. The techno revival 90 is probably for many, this being its original productions, rhythmically and also in terms of sound elements place Roza Terenzi in the techno personalities to follow closely in the coming months.

Ce mix est entièrement composé de productions signées par Nazar, chutes de studios de l’EP précédent ou matériel à entendre prochainement sur un format long, telle est la question.

After a first release on Hyperdub at the end of last year, which was surely one of the maxis that impressed me the most in 2018, Nazar offers himself 30 minutes on NTS radio during which he puts on his modern and committed Kuduro. This mix is ​​entirely composed of productions signed by Nazar himself, from materials of the previous EP or new things to be heard soon on a long format, that is the question.

Le morceau du jour #55 : Konx-Om-Pax - LA Melody

Lorsqu’on tire son nom d’artiste d’une œuvre d’Alister Crowley, on peut s’attendre à quelque chose de spécial. L’originalité de son pseudo, Konx-Om-Pax, se retrouve également dans sa musique. Signé chez Planet Mu depuis 2012, l’écossais d’origine à trouver sa maison, une cohabitation parfaite pour entretenir le flot de sa musique aux influences IDM. Des ces influences, il y a appliqué un filtre moderne, rappelant des bases hip hop, comme a su le faire Hudson Mohawke dans les années 2000, en poussant la recherche à un degré supplémentaire. Un album est à paraitre et voici le premier extrait : LA Melody.

When you chose your artist's name from a book by Alister Crowley, you can expect something special. The originality of his nickname, Konx-Om-Pax, is also found in his music. Signed at Planet Mu since 2012, the original Scottish found his home, a perfect cohabitation to maintain the flow of his music influences by 90′s IDM. From these influences, he applied a modern filter reminiscent of hip hop, as Hudson Mohawke did in the 2000s, by pushing the research to an extra degree. An album is to be released and here is the first excerpt: LA Melody.

L’album de la semaine #06 : Bjarki - Happy Earthday

L’élaboration d’un album de musique électronique a toujours été un exercice périlleux. Difficile en effet d’adapter des formats destinés aux clubs et à la danse sur la longueur d’un album. Cette étape fut cependant indispensable pour faire accepter la musique électronique comme une expression artistique de même niveau que les autres genres musicaux conventionnels dans les années 90 et établir définitivement la musique électronique comme un courant culturel majeur. Bjarki apporte aujourd’hui une crédibilité supplémentaire au genre. Alternant les styles : breakbeat, downtempo, ambient, techno... le producteur islandais réussit sur une heure a créer une atmosphère cohérente, grâce à une production soignée, parfois un peu low-fi, détunant ses sons de synthétiseurs à la manière de Boards Of Canada. Un album à consommer comme tel, dans la longueur, pour voyager dans l’esprit génial de Bjarki.

LP of the week #06 : Bjarki - Happy Earthday

The development of an electronic music album has always been a perilous exercise. Difficult to adapt club and dance formats on the length of an album. This step was however essential to involve the electronic music in an artistic expression of the same level as the other conventional musical genres in the 90s and definitively establish the electronic music like a major cultural current. Bjarki brings additional credibility to the genre today. Alternating styles: breakbeat, downtempo, ambient, techno... the Icelandic producer succeeds in an hour to create a coherent atmosphere, thanks to a neat production, sometimes a little low-fi, detuning his synth sounds in the manner of Boards Of Canada. An album to consume as such, in length, to travel in the brilliant spirit of Bjarki.

Le morceau du jour #54 : Al Wootton - Omega

Depuis 10 ans, Al Wootton a construit une identité en parallèle d’une carrière reconnue. A l’origine d’une musique aux influences linéaires, principalement le dub et la techno, Al Wootton a su créer une identité formelle qui se définit dans Deadboy. Al Wootton quitte pourtant son masque et a décidé de publier sa musique à visage découvert, sur son propre label : Trule. Le deuxième numéro du catalogue vient de paraitre, il comporte trois morceaux dans la même substance, mais dont se démarque ce Omega, entre dubstep et techno qui ouvre la face B du disque.

Track of the day #54 : Al Wootton - Omega

For 10 years, Al Wootton has built an identity in parallel with a recognized career. Originally a music with linear influences, mainly dub and techno, Al Wootton has created a formal identity that is defined in Deadboy. Al Wootton however leaves his mask and decided to publish his music openly, on his own label: Trule. The second issue of the catalog has just appeared, it includes three tracks in the same substance, but that stands out this Omega, between dubstep and techno that opens the B side of the EP.

Le morceau du jour #53 : Basic Rhythm - Edge Of Darkness

On a déjà parlé de Basic Rhythm, le double expérimental du producteur londonien East Man. Après deux morceaux remarqués sortis chez Arcola, Anthoney Hart a trouvé refuge chez un autre poids lourd : Planet Mu, label qui l’avait déjà accueilli le temps d’un album, Red, White & Zero, aux sonorités dubstep, sous son pseudo East Man. Ce premier morceau Edge Of Darkness annonce la sortie prochaine d’un album qualifié par son auteur de : “coloré, brutal et aventureux” et pensé pour les DJs.

We have already spoken about Basic Rhythm, the experimental alias of the London producer East Man. After two remarkable tracks released at Arcola, Anthoney Hart found refuge with another heavyweight: Planet Mu, label that had already hosted the man the time of an album, Red, White & Zero, dubstep sounds, under his pseudo East Man. This first piece Edge Of Darkness announces the upcoming release of an album qualified by its author of "colorful, brutal and adventurous" and thought for DJs.

Le morceau du jour #52 : Sully - Porcelain

Sully c’est la version UK Bass de John McClane. Le genre de type qui porte ses couilles, seul et contre tous. Le genre de type qui ne lâche pas rien et ne se résigne pas à suivre les modes. Depuis plus de 10 ans le producteur anglais défend et honore le son électronique britannique, s’entêtant à entretenir une flamme qui a bien failli s’éteindre, Sully n’a fait que perfectionné sa technique jusqu’à ce que le soldat soit enfin prêt à assumer son statut de leader. La construction de sa base, son chateau fort et label : Uncertain Hour depuis l’année dernière, le légitime encore un peu plus. Sur cette deuxième sortie, la précision de la jungle de Sully s’accompagne d’une folie rythmique et synthétique IDM. Classique.

Sully is the UK Bass version of John McClane. The kind of guy who wears his balls, alone and against all. The kind of guy who does not let go of anything and does not resign himself to follow fashions. For more than 10 years the English producer defends and honors the British electronic sound, stubbornly maintaining a flame that has almost extinguished, Sully has only perfected his technique until the soldier is finally ready to assume its status of leader. The construction of its base, its castle and label: Uncertain Hour since last year,  legitimates him a little more. On this second outing, the precision of Sully’s jungle is accompanied by a rhythmic and synthetic madness IDM. Classic.

Le morceau du jour #51 : Skee Mask - 800AB

Après son album très remarqué, Compro sorti en 2018, Skee Mask s’est imposé comme un producteur précoce à suivre de très près. Après la réédition de ce dernier dans une édition vinyle limitée, Bryan Müller revient sur son label de prédilection Ilian Tape, avec un maxi et trois morceaux. Aucune innovation ou nouveauté surprenante, la musique présentée ici pourrait nous faire penser à des chutes de studio du précédent album. Mais la musique de Skee Mask a ce petit supplément qui passionne les oreilles sensibles à la musique techno. Trois titres relativement classiques donc, chacun possédant une ambiance propre, la plus inspirée ce retrouve sans doute sur ce 808AB qui clôt l’EP.

Track of the day #51 : Skee Mask - 800AB

After his highly acclaimed album Compro released in 2018, Skee Mask has established itself as an early producer to follow very closely. After the reissue of the latter in a limited vinyl edition, Bryan Müller returns to his favorite label Ilian Tape, with a maxi and three tracks. No innovation or surprising novelty, the music presented here could make us think of studio works from the previous album. But the music of Skee Mask has this little supplement that fascinates the ears sensitive to techno music. Three relatively classic tracks so, each with a clean atmosphere, the most inspired, with no doubt, is this 808AB that closes the EP.

Le producteur australien de Melbourne DJ Plead se plait à dessiner des morceaux autour des rythmes du moyen-orient, comme les percussions libaines par exemple. Pas de nouveauté sur cet EP sorti chez l’ami TSVI : Nervous Horizon. La même recette, la même efficacité. On peut cependant discerner une tendance qui se dessine sur quelques segments : l’emploi de synthétiseur typique de la musique Chaabi, mis en valeur ces dernières années par des artistes comme Omar Souleyman.

Australian producer Melbourne DJ Plead likes to draw songs around Middle Eastern rhythms, such as Libyan percussion. No novelty on this EP released at the friend TSVI label: Nervous Horizon. The same recipe, the same efficiency. However, we can discern a trend that is emerging in a few segments: the use of synthesizer typical of Chaabi music, highlighted in recent years by artists like Omar Souleyman.

Le mix de la semaine #11 : Ossia pour NTS - 22/02/19

La musique noire et abstraite de Ossia est à l’honneur sur ce mix d’une heure réalisé parle producteur lui même pour NTS. Une heure de ses compositions, agrémentée d’inédits pour un set lent et sombre ou le dub et la musique électronique se confondent dans une obscurité presque oppressante. Un mix parfait pour les insomniaques, d’une qualité et d’une cohérence irréprochable.

DJ set of the week #11 : Ossia for NTS - 22/02/19

The black and abstract music of Ossia is in the spotlight on this mix of one hour made by the producer himself for NTS. An hour of his compositions, embellished with unpublished tracks for a slow and dark set where dub and electronic music merge in an almost oppressive darkness. A perfect mix for insomniacs, quality and irreproachable consistency.

L’EP de la semaine #09 : Lee Gamble - In A Paraventral Scale EP (Hyperdub)

Première pierre d’un édifice qui comptera en tout trois maxis, le vétéran Lee Gamble poursuit ses études de recherches sonores déjà entamé sur son album Mnestic Pressure, sorti en 2017, déjà chez Hyperdub. Le précédent disque se constituait de 13 titres, rassemblés sous un genre qu’on pourrait qualifier d’IDM, cependant chaque titres avait son atmosphère propre, ses origines, allant de la techno à la drum & bass. Ici, l’intention est beaucoup plus claire : l’élaboration d’architectures sonores et temporelles, respectant ainsi les principes même de l’IDM, à savoir créer une musique unique, dénuée des influences classiques de la musique axée vers les clubs. A noter le très original et inspiré BMW Shuanghuan X5, composé de samples de voitures qui viennent à se confondre avec des éléments de musiques électronique.

EP of the week #09 : Lee Gamble - In A Paraventral Scale EP (Hyperdub)

The first stone of a building that will have in all three maxis, the veteran Lee Gamble continues his sound research studies already started on his album Mnestic Pressure, released in 2017, already on Hyperdub. The previous record consisted of 13 tracks, gathered under a genre that could be called IDM, however each track had its own atmosphere, its origins, ranging from techno to drum & bass. Here, the intention is much clearer: the development of sonic and temporal architectures, thus respecting the very principles of the IDM, namely to create a unique music, devoid of the classical influences of the music directed towards the clubs. Note the very original and inspired BMW Shuanghuan X5, composed of cars samples that come to be mixed with elements of electronic music.

Le morceau du jour #49 : K-LONE - Sleepwalker

Actuellement au sommet, le label de Bristol Idle Hands compile tout ce qui se fait de mieux outre manche en ce qui concerne la musique électronique dérivée du dub. Le morceau de K-LONE Sleepwalker arrive à magnifier cette rencontre entre la musique froide que peut être la techno et les inspirations jamaïcaines emplies de reverb et de delay. Sur ces six minutes, la musique aérienne de K-LONE s’évapore à coup de delay et d’une rythmique essentiellement assuré par des shakers et des hit hats, tandis que la basse line assure la pulsation terrestre. Un titre nocturne à souhait, déstressant, prenant, mélancolique, déjà classique.

Track of the day #49 : K-LONE - Sleepwalker

Currently at the top, the Bristol Idle Hands label compiles all that is best in the England production of electronic music derived from dub. The track by K-LONE Sleepwalker manages to magnify this encounter between the cold music that can be techno and the Jamaican inspirations filled with reverbs and delays. Over these six minutes, K-LONE's aerial music evaporates with delays and a rhythm essentially ensured by shakers and hit hats, while the bass line ensures the earth's pulsation. A nocturnal track, de-stressing, melancholic, already classic.

Le morceau du jour #48 : Bambounou - Seize-sept

Le producteur français rejoint la team Whities sur ce nouveau maxi, numéroté 21 du catalogue du label anglais. La promesse était d’explorer la richesses des rythmes, contrat rempli sur 3 titres. Seize-sept conclue l’effort, d’un morceau aux inspirations techno minimaliste qui peuvent évoquer le travail de Jeff Mills. Une boucle où le travail sur le rythme se fait discret tout en imprimant la direction du morceau.

Track of the day #48 : Bambounou - Seize-sept

The French producer joins the Whities team on this new EP, numbered 21 from the catalog of the English label. The promise was to explore the riches of rhythms, contract filled on 3 tracks. Sixteen-seven concludes the effort, from a piece with minimalist techno inspirations that can evoke the work of Jeff Mills. A loop where the work on the rhythm is discreet while printing the direction of the track.
