Louis is the one who reached out to Lestat through the lawyers and Lestat gave him the book to say "You hurt me. This is exactly how you hurt me". Louis wanted to check on him, and then when Lestat reaches out because he actually needs support after faking his death Louis doesn't answer because he's wallowing in shame over the book and now over Regina. Louis is not "A selfish bastard", at least not entirely. He loves Lestat and Lestat loves him but they hurt each other! They will continue to hurt each other! But the love is always there!
