i'm considering signing up to be a pinch hitter but i've never done it before, can you explain a little more how it works? what if i don't know the pairings, for example?

Hi there!

To give you a little more info about the pinch-hitting process, when an assignment requires a pinch-hitter, an email is sent out to all pinch-hitters detailing the ships that an author is requesting. From there, a pinch hitter can request more info about the assignment, such as the provided prompts or likes and dislikes. If it turns out that the pinch-hit isn’t your cup of tea, that’s no problem! Pinch-hitters are never required to take a pinch-hit.

There is, however, a time-sensitive element in play now that we’re a week away from fic reveals. Before accepting a pinch-hit, a pinch-hitter must be sure they can complete their fic to the required standards (available on the AO3 collection profile) by noon PDT on June 29th.

Fic Drafts are Due This Saturday

Hi all!

This is your gentle reminder that your fic must be posted to collection by June 22nd at noon PDT.

If your fic is not posted to the collection, you will defaulted as an author and your assignment will go out as a pinch hit.

AO3 doesn’t allow us to see your drafts, so please make sure to post your fic. It doesn’t need to be in its 100% finished form, but we do need to see that you’re on track to being ready for reveals on June 29th.

If you missed out on signing up or would just like to put your name forward as a potential pinch-hitter, you can sign up Here. We have very few pinch-hitters currently signed up, so if you or someone you know might be interested, please direct them to that link.

If you’d like to sign up to potentially receive a treat (an extra fic written by an exchange participant, or anyone, really) you can do so Here.

If you’re looking to see the list of available author letters to treat from, you can do so Here. The collection will be open for treats for a little while after the 29th if it looks like you’ll need a little extra time.

can we submit treat fics after the fic deadline as long as it's before the fics go live?

Hi there!You can absolutely submit treat fics after the assignment deadline. We aren’t planning on closing the collection until a few days past author reveals, so if things work out that your treat fic is a little late, that won’t be a problem!

Apologies for the radio silence! We were having trouble getting the matches to work out – perils of a variety of tags and a smaller number of sign-ups; sometimes the required overlap just isn’t there – but we’ve been in contact with people behind the scenes and it looks like the matches are just about set. We’re going to do one final check, and, barring any surprises, matches should be out by the end of the day.

hey! sorry if this is kind of a dumb question but what exactly is a 'dear author' letter??

Hey there, not a dumb question at all! Dear Author Letters are basically a way to include longer/more detailed explanations of likes, dislikes, and prompts. They tend to provide more clarification than is easily made available through the AO3 sign-up form. You can see a couple of examples from this year’s exchange here. (And last year’s for a few more.)

Additionally, letters can be shared through this form, which opens up the possibility of receiving a treat fic – a surprise fic in addition to the one that will be gifted to you through the exchange. Treat fics can be written by anyone participating in the exchange or not and are always an especially fun surprise!
