Two films from North Wales on the big screen at Pontio, Bangor this June
For the first time at Sinema Pontio, two original films from North Wales will be on the big screen in one month. This June, screenings of Madfabulous – based on the flamboyant Fifth Marquess - and Effi o Blaenau – a film adaptation of Gary Owen’s drama, Iphigenia in Splott.
Callum Scott Howells, Ruby Stokes a Rupert Everett star in director Celyn Jones’ masterpiece (The Almond and the Seahorse) based on the fifth Marquess of Anglesey and filmed locally here in North Wales at the Tŷ Newydd and Penrhyn estates. The film follows the life of Henry Paget who spends his family’s wealth through his social life and lavish, extravagant fashion before his death at the age of twenty-nine.
Then, we look forward to a Welsh language film (with English subtitles), a cinematic adaptation of Gary Owen’s drama Iphigenia in Splott by Marc Evans (Mr Butron, House of America, Patagonia) set in North Wales. Starring Leisa Gwenllian who delivers a powerful performance as Effi, she’s hoping to escape her hometown and glimpses a new future after meeting injured soldier Lee.
As part of the screenings there will be two special previews at Sinema Pontio in the company of the directors. On Wednesday 3 June, Celyn Jones will present Madfabulous in a preview that’s already sold out, followed by a question and answer session. Then on Thursday 18 June, in partnership with Met Film Distribution Marc Evans will hold a question and answer session after the preview of Effi o Blaenau.
Dion Wyn Hughes, Sinema Pontio Coordinator said “At a time when films from Wales are scarce, the releases of Madfabulous and Effi o Blaenau are a welcome addition to our cinema programme. We look forward to welcoming the directors of these films, Celyn Jones and Marc Evans, to offer local audiences deeper insights into their projects and, hopefully, to inspire the next generation of creatives. Experiencing diverse stories from North Wales on the big screen is truly exciting, and many more films from Wales are set to be released soon.”
Madfabulous will be screening at Sinema Pontio from Friday 5 – Thursday 18 June, and a preview of Effi o Blaenau on Thursday 18 June with screenings from Friday 19 June - Thursday 2 July.
