I never really thought about this too much, but what if Doc’s time machine never worked? He said “Einie” had become the world’s first time traveler, meaning he had never used the Delorean before Marty arrived at Twin Pines Mall. Yet, he still had so much confidence in his invention that he drove it directly at the both of them.
Had the time machine never worked, like nearly all of Doc’s past inventions, the car would have simply ran the two of them over. Or, more realistically, splattered their bodies all over the mall parking lot.
What if the three movies are the fantasized reality of Doctor Emmett Brown? A man stuck in a depression so immense that his final invention was not an invention at all, but a suicide note. Leaving his personal belongings at home, and his dog secured safely inside the vehicle, ‘crazy’ Doctor Emmett Brown took the lives of himself, and aspiring high school student Martin McFly early Saturday morning at Twin Pines Mall. Perhaps Doc killed Marty to prevent him from making the same mistakes he himself had made in choosing a dead-end career, and a lifetime of loneliness.
Imagine Emmett expected the arrival of the Libyans all along. Imagine he knew that if the Delorean wasn’t going to kill himself and Marty (which was the Doc’s plan) the Libyans would. In the first case, the Libyans would swing by, collect their plutonium, make like a tree, and get out of there. Unfortunately for Emmett, the time machine did work, and now he had a new list of priorities to sort out. He had brought a gun, but did not expect to use it, so he had not thought to load it. But after being shot to death, which was not part of his plan, Marty’s well-being was now in his own hands. The fact that the machine did work was a miracle to the both of them, and Marty happened to travel back to the precise period he needed to.
Doc didn’t want to read the note Marty had written him in 1955. Seeing as he was heading down a path of failure all his life, he was in denial about what was to come of his future. The fact that Marty traveled to prove the Doc’s future success was enough for him to see that his life had a purpose. Marty saved Doc Brown before he was even supposed to be born. Or is it more likely that, by pure intervention and unfathomable circumstance, the Doc saved himself? He read the note, knew that his time machine would work, and prepared for the option he failed to consider. The fate of Doctor Emmett Brown rested on Marty McFly, and on the object that was brought to his attention:
It makes an appearance in all three films (in the second one very briefly) and serves to save our two protagonists in triumphant fashion. Had Marty McFly never met Emmett Brown, the Doc would be a body in a Hill Valley parking lot, no matter which way you swung it.
Kind of gives you a whole new outlook on your density.
