I wanted this one to feel very exposed in a quiet way — harsh beach sunlight, sunburnt skin, sand stuck everywhere, tiny swim briefs, and that weird introspective mood that sometimes hits after being in the ocean too long.

The long shadow became one of my favorite parts of the painting because it almost feels like another figure sharing the frame. I liked keeping the pose natural and slightly awkward instead of turning it into an idealized beach image. More documentary than heroic.

Finished this new piece — a beach scene full of heat, texture, and midday light. I loved working on the contrast between the warm skin and the cooler reflections coming off the water. That harsh sunlight creates such sharp shapes on the body, and translating them into soft layers of watercolor was the main challenge here.

His stance is what really held my attention. Something unapologetic and grounded about the way he stands there, not posing, just completely comfortable in his own skin. I pushed the textures in the sand and the water to keep the setting alive without pulling focus away from him.

Casual Stretch in Speedos

I wanted this piece to feel like standing under the sun — that moment when the light hits the skin just right and everything becomes warm, soft, and a little bit hazy. Working with my new Daniel Smith palette made a huge difference here; the pigments gave me a broader range of warm tones and more natural transitions between shadow and light.

The figure came first, built up in transparent layers. I focused on temperature more than detail: violet-cool shadows on the torso, siennas and ochres for the sunlit areas, and small bursts of reflected light to keep the skin feeling alive. The pose is simple but confident, a relaxed stance that carries its own quiet charm.

The beach background is intentionally loose — just enough ocean, sand, and horizon to set the mood without overpowering the body. I wanted the atmosphere to feel open and calm, the kind of space where someone can just exist comfortably in their skin.

I spent extra time on the environment too — the bedspread texture, the pillow edges, and the rug lines all help anchor the figure in something lived-in. It’s intimate without feeling staged, and that’s always the balance I aim for: a mix of realism, mood, and a bit of quiet heat.
