Postcard #49: Market Place, Loftus Yes, it's been too long since I posted the last card...however, while looking for some information about the Market Place, I came across an interesting article on an archeological dig going on in Loftus. Postcard #48: Miner’s Hospital, Guisborough
Founded in 1873, this hospital is also known as the Admiral Chaloner Cottage Hospital. There is all sorts of information on it on the Voluntary Hospital Database from the number of beds to expenditures and staffing, all laid out in a nice spreadsheet format for you to peruse at your leisure: http://www.hospitalsdatabase.lshtm.ac.uk/hospital.php?hospno=396 The other interesting tidbit I've come across is that this particular building is no longer a hospital, but had been refurbished and converted into apartments in 2005. Postcard #47: Guisborough, Parish Church

Postcard #46: Guisborough, Parish Church is also known as the St. Nicholas Parish Church.

Postcard #44: Guisboro, Old Gateway Another view of the "Old Gateway", which was part of the Guisborough Priory. Postcard #43: Guisborough, Old Gateway Part of the Outer Porch. The larger gateway on the left, was to accommodate wagons, while the smaller one on the right, was how pedestrians would enter the inner and outer courts. Postcard #42: Guisborough, Old Chestnut Tree, Priory Gardens I wasn't sure if I would find any mention of this tree, but there it was on the GEN UKI website: "The priory grounds have been beautifully laid out in gardens, and permission is freely given by Mrs. Chaloner to visitors to view them, the ruins, and the gigantic horse chestnut tree, the trunk of which is eight yards in girth." Postcard #41: Guisborough Priory, The Rose Gardens According to Wikipedia, land south of the Priory was used as a formal garden, which had been laid out by Margaret Chaloner (Lady Guisborough ) in the late 19th Century. The rose gardens are only one part of this elaborate late Victorian garden, which also include a sunken Italian garden and an ornamental pool. Postcard #40: Roseberry Topping, Guisborough An interesting name for a very interesting landmark. Roseberry Topping distinct look was caused partly by a geological fault as well as a mining collapse which happened in 1912. If one climbs to the pinnacle of the hill, one will find a memorial to Captain Cook, who is said to have found his sense of adventure exploring the slopes of Roseberry Topping as a youngster. Love this vintage postcard of my hometown. Happy Canada Day!
I realize this link has nothing to do with vintage postcards, but it does have to do with an extraordinary find, in a junk shop, forgotten, then found. A treasure trove. Read the article about the lost visual journals by Charles Dellschau and I promise you will not be disappointed, but hopefully be as fascinated by it as I was.

Postcard #39: No. 2061 Guisborough
I love this postcard, but unfortunately, I cannot tell you anything about the buildings in it. As far as I know, they may not even be in existence anymore. I did spend quite a bit of time yesterday doing searches and scouring images on Google to see if I could find out what the main building in this postcard was, but no luck. So, if anyone has any idea, I would love to hear from you. Thanks!

Postcard #38: Guisborough, Market Place Although I couldn't find anything out exactly on the Market Place, I did find out that the original Market Cross that had been there had been replaced with a Sundial and Weathervane in the 18th century.
