Makenzie Campbell, from a poem featured in "2 a.m. Thoughts," originally published in 2017
They said: "time heals" but dostoevsky said, "one never forgets the taste of certain tears."
no conversations anymore, but you’re still someone I genuinely care about
be around people who think everything about you is a big deal. your birthday. favorite food. favorite flowers. you in general. a big deal.
The art of letting whoever think whatever
You Should’ve Taught Me How to Leave
Teach me how to stay when the stars start falling, when love turns quiet but the ghosts keep calling. Teach me how to hold what was never mine, how to sip from pain and call it wine.
You said forever like it was a prayer, and I knelt, believing God was there. But forever ended in the span of a sigh, and I learned even angels know how to lie.
You swore you’d love me past the grave, so why am I the one digging, trying to be brave? Teach me how to breathe inside your ghost, how to haunt a heart that needed me most.
You burned the map but I stayed, still lost, counting every scar as the cost. And if the heavens fell tonight, I’d kneel, to let ruin kiss me, just to feel. Because darling, you were never meant to stay, but god, you should’ve taught me how to walk away.
Now I sleep beside echoes, soft and cruel, building castles in a body turned tomb. You took the sun, left me the ache, and called it mercy for my sake.
But I would love you again, I swear, I would, through every storm, through every flood. Even knowing it ends this way, I’d still stay, love. Please just teach me how to stay.
I will become everything I said I would be.
I used to tell myself, ‘Maybe they’re going through something.’ But then I realized that I was too, and I never treated anyone that way.
