Digimon and Gender Identity
Okay because this has been brought up again due to people getting childish about others calling Meicrackmon or Meicoomon âSheâ I want to bring this up. You all try to use this scene in Digimon Tamers as the be all end all of Digimon when this is one series.
First off, hereâs a few things you need to take into account:
Renamon is a Nature Spirits Digimon belonging to the Beast Family.
Most Digimon usually reside with others in the same grouping.
Renamon has lived long enough to see others around her Digivolve. This means sheâs seen some of the most feminine and graceful Digimon potentially Digivolve into the most masculine and buff Digimon sheâs ever seen.
She is sought after romantically by Digimon on numerous occasions, because they want her as their queen.
She could Digivolve to Leomon for all we know.
She is in one out of many universes.
Her line is âBy nature, Digimon donât have genders.â which wasnât exactly saying âWe are genderlessâ
For consistency letâs go with Renamon for an example.
In the Tamers anime we see Renamon go down this route:
Renamon - > Kyuubimon - > Taomon - > Sakuyamon
Thatâs all fine and definitely a highly feminine line. But letâs look at the rest of her evolution branch and see what routes she can possibly go down shall we?
Renamon - > Leomon - > Kimeramon - > Rosemon
Renamon - > Harpymon -> LadyDevimon -> Piedmon
Renamon - > Kyubimon -> WereGarurumon - > Seraphimon
Renamon -> BlackGatomon -> MagnaAngemon -> Lilithmon
Her line can become Digimon we all tend to refer to as âmaleâ then immediately switch to one we know as âfemaleâ
To say Digimon donât have gender is wrong. You can call a Digimon whatever gender you want! The reasoning for this is because Digimon donât have Genders due to the fact that whatever they potentially have biologically can change within seconds. In fact, if we wanna go and say âthey have nothing down thereâ you can always go with that, however Digimon can in fact, breed. We donât know how, but they can. But gender doesnât play a role in it either.
Ever play the first Digimon World DS Game? In order to get Omnimon you needed to breed MetalGarurumon with WarGreymon. Two Digimon that the fandom often tends to refer to as âmaleâ and that works out too. Depending on their personality itâs possible for them to refer to themselves as male and still have a child.
We had a BomberNanimon that referred to herself as female. For reference:
And weâve also had an Ophanimon that refers to himself as male. For reference:
Cutemon was also thought to be female, and it is definitely a cute and girly acting Digimon. But Cutemon refers to himself as male. He also has a mother and father Cutemon.
Donât be a dick to someone who refers to Digimon by specific genders. Some Digimon canonly do have gender identity, or a full line that sticks to that one gender appearance. (Such as Venusmon or Dianamon)
Digimon are not bound by sex, but are in fact: Genderfluid creatures that can sometimes just prefer to be referred to as one gender.
Tl;Dr: Digimon have Genders, but not sexes. Renamon was not expressing her specific gender identity, she was mentioning that Digimon arenât tied to a specific gender despite their appearance. At the end of the day, what Renamon says for her universe may not apply to the dozens of other universes that exist in Digimon.
There is no need to be aggressive to people who see a Digimon as a specific gender or no gender. Unless the line is capable of splitting from itâs gender appearance - itâs safe to say both genders for it, or no gender at all.
Just enjoy Digimon for what it is and have fun loving it instead of attacking other people because you failed to research more than a 3 second line that has no effect on the entire canon as a whole.
