He stared sullenly over the choppy water as a storm began to gather over their heads. The breeze ruffled his hair, giving the illusion of movement although he hasn’t moved from his spot at the edge of the water. Finally, he turned, meeting their gaze with eyes the color of a winter sky. His voice was soft; neutral but heavy with meaning. “You are quick to speak of redemption but I have seen the depths of human cruelty with my own eyes. I bare the scars of it on my skin…. You are tender indeed, but you do not realize that humanity has proven time and time again that it doesn’t deserve redemption. And they will never receive my forgiveness for what they have done to me.”
Someone help me get over this man….

Jasper was relatively pleased with what he was given as far as his human appearance went. He was pale and slender, more of a ghost than a person and he could slide under the radar with little to no questions asked. That was why he was able to walk around the city without anyone noticing him; just as he liked it. As a siren though, he naturally drew people to him, even if it was mildly… He would be lying if he said he didn’t love having that power over people.
He grinned slyly as he crossed the street and headed towards the park. He paused at the water fountain to get a drink when he noticed someone sitting on a bench alone. He sidled over and sat beside him, crossing one leg over the other, studying the brown haired boy with careful eyes before speaking in softly accented English. “What’s bothering you, little one? You seem troubled...”

Al that Jasper could think of as he listened to the boy’s sad tale was that his beloved Ursula was going to love this. He schooled his face into one of gentle kindness as he listened, his electric blue eyes unblinking as he held the pup’s gaze in his own. He could sense the hurt and desperation in his voice, taste his desires like the salty pitch that was the ocean and it delighted him in ways he couldn’t even begin to explain as he leaned a bit closer, nodding in feigned understanding.
“Poor child,” he cooed, his voice soft as the surf against the sand. “That does sound rough. Especially when you’re trying your hardest.” He tsked gently as he cocked his head, the movement fluid and serpentine as he stares directly into the boys soft puppy eyes. “I know someone that could… perhaps, help you out. Of course she would need some kind of payment but she’s a fair woman and if you truly wanted to remain here, find the answers you seek…. Well, she would be the one to ask…”

A previous offer to help him stay in Prentiss had fallen on deaf ears. Robin had shaken Doug’s ability to trust her right out of the gate. He’d stopped trusting strangers, but this one hit him differently. He couldn’t put his finger on why, but he felt safe.
“I am trying. I’m trying really hard,” Doug said, feeling his efforts being seen. “But it doesn’t feel like it’s enough. Not enough to keep me here longer. I can’t leave Lilo and Max. Not yet.”
But he also didn’t want to tell him anything about what he was there for either. There were people in town who did know. He was caught between a rock and a hard place. He was starting to be open to new solutions as his ideas kept failing.
“I don’t know how anyone could fix this. I don’t know who I can trust anymore. And the people I can trust - I don’t want them to know. I just don’t,” he said, his heart resisting as his emotions stirred up in his chest and tightened it. The young wolf hadn’t navigated those feelings yet. If he wasn’t doing anything wrong, why did he feel the need to keep secrets? He broke eye contact with the young manand looked down at his lap. “And even if she can -- I don’t really have anything to give. Nothing that’s mine to give away, anyway.”
“I’m sorry,” Doug looked back up, clearing his throat as he resisted the urge to get more emotional as all of his pent up frustration flooded out from him like a broken faucet, “I just dumped all of that on you and I don’t even know your name. I’m Douglas.”
“You deserve some acknowledgment,” he crooned, his lips curling into a sympathetic pout as the boy talked. “You’re doing so well.” He had never really formed attachements. He was close to his brother, of course, and he would move Heaven and Hell for Ursula. Past that forging connections with humans seemed… rather pointless if he was being honest. Their lives were a blip in the cosmos, a speck that hardly mattered while he went on and on, existing and singing a song of hopes realized and desires filled. Still, this was just the kind of person he and his brother brought into the fold; people who didn’t know what to do, who had reached the end of their rope- or so they thought.
For a moment their eye contact broke. The boy looked down at his lap and for the briefest of moments a hard look passed across Jasper’s soft face. Sometimes things weren’t so simple but he had planted the seed, fed him the idea, and he knew that if things didn’t start looking up, the child would search him out and want to heed his suggestion.
That was how it always worked.
“Oh, child,” he said softly, schooling his face into something less terrifying before he could notice the change. “Don’t worry yourself. I don’t mind listening.” He sat back, his fingers brushing his arm and sending the smallest jolt of electricity shooting through him. “It’s what I do” He cocked his head, a soft smile playing across his full lips. “If you change your mind I’m sure you can find me around.”

Of course people didn’t want to willingly share their problems. That was when he turned on the ‘charm’, his voice taking on a musical tone as he leaned in closer. “Poor sweet child,” he purred, his blue eyes glinting with ancient enchantments to old for humans to acknowledge. “You can tell me. Jasper won’t tell a soul.” He sat back, oozing that charm and charisma, waiting to see if it took.

Doug starred at the other young man, the hair on the back of his neck standing on end at first. His hands clenched the bench seat tightly, preparing himself to leave, but he kept his gaze for a moment too long. Before he had time to realize what was happening, his jaw relaxed, and his fingers went slack. “Really?” He asked, a tone of desperation in his voice, like that’s all he wanted to be able to do, but he wasn’t sure he could trust most people.
It was a hard pill for him to swallow when all he wanted to do was make friends. He normally would have learned his lesson, but for some reason, he felt compelled to open up. “I’m in trouble for not doing my job fast enough. Some bad people have gotten in my way of finding what I need to find and I haven’t been able to get my footing again since,” he admitted with a disgruntled sigh, “my alpha will tell my master if I fail, and I’ll have to leave. I don’t want to leave. I like the friends I’ve made here. I’ve never had friends before.”
Doug paused. He hadn’t blinked, still locked into the man’s eyes. He didn’t know why he couldn’t look away, but he also didn’t want to, and he was okay with that.
“But then, I can’t help but wonder -- am I the bad guy? I’m doing what I’m told and obeying. That should make me good, wouldn’t it?”
You’re a good boy, Doug. Charles’ voice from his childhood rang in his ears. He hadn’t heard it in years, but it’d been said enough after every successful mission for it to be drilled into his head.

This... Wasn’t going as Doug had planned.
Tracking was easy in the wilderness. All he needed to do was find some evidence - tracks, markings on trees, flattened foliage until he caught a scent. The rest was cake after that. All he had to do was pinpoint a location, send the coordinates, and then bail. The urban jungle was different. He’d never had to interact with people outside of his gang or his master before. It was a dynamic he didn’t know how to begin to navigate. The fact that he didn’t know what he was doing here was becoming more and more evident. Not just to him, but to Alphonse. And that’s who’s opinion mattered most.
And Alphonse was only half of his worries. Robin made things ten times harder.
A voice snapped him out of his thoughts, forcing the young man to look up, startled by the question. Had he really looked that perturbed? “What? No, no I’m fine,” he lied, “I’m okay. I think. I fucked up something I shouldn’t have. But I think -- I think I can still salvage it. It’s not your problem, though. But thanks for asking.”
Of course people didn’t want to willingly share their problems.
