Blog on Pretzels? But Why?!

Those that know me are fully aware of my love for, yep, you guessed it, PRETZELS! I’ve always enjoyed any and all soft bread... anything carb-related is hard to turn down. Growing up, we would take trips to the local mall and usually walked in at the entrance where the scent of freshly baked pretzels strongly greeted you. It always smelled AMAZING! Some visits, we might get so lucky to actually enjoy one from the Auntie Anne’s. My love for pretzels must have started there and since then it continues to grow. Now, I can’t help but try pretzels anywhere they are available; usually accompanied with a craft beer, hopefully local. My husband came up with a great idea to start a blog to review all the pretzels we have tried when visiting different places. So here it is... a pretzel blog for my fellow pretzel, carb-fiending and beer loving (also carbs) people! This is for you. 

Throughout the many pretzel reviews, I will be rating each place by the following scale.:

Rating 1: Must Check Out! There’s no time like the Pretzel -This place is the bomb! You should get yourself here as soon as you can to try out what they have to offer. Otherwise, you’re missing out.

Rating 2: Pretzel it on your list - Not the best but pretty good. Pencil or pretzel it in for another day to try.

Rating 3: KNOT this Pretzel {yes, I know this isn’t the right spelling} - I would not recommend wasting your time and/or money here.

About the Place: This newer micro-brew, founded by a native KC’er, has done a great job of bringing German-style beers or should I say “biers” to Kansas City along with Bavarian entrees. You can’t go wrong with any beer or food of your choosing.

Atmosphere: This joint has two separate feels. Inside, it is very much a sports bar, with one large screen TV and several smaller TV’s throughout the bar where many locals come to watch big game such as the World Series and World Cup. The owners designed this place as a beer hall with long picnic tables; however, it’s seat yourself, and many Americans are weird about sitting next to strangers. There is a high likelihood of having the table to yourself; which can be great for large groups. Outside has the feel of a beir garden made up of several picnic tables, a playground, and corn hole, the bean bag game you typically play in a drunken or slightly buzzes state. This area is a great place to hangout on a nice KC day! 

Beer Selection: Great local beer options. Two favorites are the Dunkel and Weizenbock. Hefeweizen is next on the list of favorites. After ordering the Helles beer and taking a sip, nostalgia from a trip to Germany brought me back to visiting a local beer hall in Munich.

Pretzel: KC Bier Co. got the Bavarian pretzel right as it tastes almost identical to the authentic German Bavarian pretzel. The malty flavor is fully present which is what I believe forms a true pretzel flavor. Sounds weird but this is the ingredient that provides that dark golden color to a Bavarian pretzel. The presentation was good too as it was served on a wooden cutting board with a side of spicy mustard dipping sauce. I personally do not enjoy the taste of spicy to the soft pretzel and prefer no dipping sauce and to eat the pretzel plain. A cheese dip option or substitution should be offered.

I have already been here multiple times and plan to continue coming back. I love this place!
