Two of the most effective cannabis canopy management techniques produce very different results for very different reasons. Here is when to use each one.SCROG (Screen of Green):- 2-4 plants per light- Net placed above canopy, branches woven through- Long veg time (6-8 weeks)- Creates perfectly flat canopy where every bud gets equal light- Maximum yield per PLANT- Best for: growers with plant count limits who want max output from each oneSOG (Sea of Green):- 16-25 plants per light- Minimal or zero veg time- Each plant produces one main cola- Fastest cycle time (8-10 weeks from clone)- Maximum yield per SQUARE FOOT PER YEAR- Best for: growers with no plant count limits who want fastest turnoverThe real difference:SCROG = maximum from each plant. You invest more time (longer veg) but extract more bud per individual plant. If legal plant count matters to you, this is the way.SOG = maximum production velocity. Less yield per plant but WAY more harvests per year. A SOG room can run 4-5 cycles annually vs 3 cycles for SCROG. At scale, the math often favors SOG.SOG has one critical requirement: Uniform, identical clones. Every plant must be the same strain, same age, same height. If your clones are inconsistent — different heights, different vigor, different genetics mixed in — SOG falls apart because the canopy becomes uneven. This is why SOG growers need a reliable clone source. Every clone has to be genetically identical and consistently rooted to the same level. What about other methods?- Mainlining: most uniform colas but longest veg time (8-10 weeks). Best yield per plant of any method but slowest cycle.- Topping + LST: middle ground. Good yield improvement without the commitment of full SCROG or the plant count of SOG.- No training: leaves significant yield on the table. Only acceptable for absolute beginners on first grow.Full comparison of all canopy methods: Canopy Management GuideStrains that respond well to SCROG: Strain EncyclopediaUniform clones for SOG production: Clone MenuClone care protocol: primecutsnursery.com/cannabis-clone-carePrime Cuts Nursery — consistent, uniform clones for any training method.
