witches are humans with the power to affect natural or unnatural change by magical means. they connect themselves with divine forces in order to practice magic. with regular practice they can become highly skillful, dangerous if endeavors lead to malecium. there is a general curse to their existence; they tend to become addicted to supernatural forces and due to their constant use of magic, to misuse they will surely go down a path of becoming increasingly amoral towards human life as a result. the concept of witches has existed across various cultures both primitive and advanced, throughout recorded history. their general misconception of their kind is primarily rooted in the mass carnage of the middle ages, against people, particularly women, who practiced any form of belief or healing that could be deemed anti-christian.

macaulay mott was the constant fear of his mother but one that she learned to disguise. the last pregnancy that she endured almost ended in disaster but she senses that the cycle could easily repeat itself. the midwives looked worried, fear painting their timeless features as the words of the doctor seemed accurate. one of the babies wouldn’t make it and that prognosis scared the hell out of the woman. as the pain became unbearable, blinding even - she feels herself fading and completely passes out.
as she dozes in and out of consciousness, the woman can now hear his impatient wailing from across the hall and never once did his tiny lungs falter.
the mere sound proves his strength and that brings a sluggish smile to his mother’s features. when she calls to the midwives, his childish roar ceases to exist and he’s placed within the same bassinet as his sister. hands clutch to him in animal instinct. she wants to keep you safe and despite the age of the twin babies, they’re already able to tell there is no life without the other.
from this point on, he will never be this intimate with his mother again, and instead will replace these feelings with a love for mabel. the sad part of this tale, their mother won’t even remember showing this much emotion over something so wholesome ever again.
however - why would he want to remember? especially when she’s always going to stand by his side and force darkness into his future. too young and bright eyed to understand the reason behind her tears, macaulay is startled by the sound of another child in the room. there comes the elder midwife - she’s older than dirt and tends to the older mott children. at peace with the warmth of the room, the older boy casts his awkward glance over and immediately senses the other is important. there is a brotherly bond there, one that no one else could understand but when he’s older – he will. if only things would forever be easy for them.
they will never be easy for him.
macaulay’s definition of family and loyalty expands as he ages. countless times he has sat there in silence, while listening to his parents converse about semi-important topics. acting far more mature then he really is, macaulay practices his already perfect etiquette while brandishing his silverware. cutting into the roast that was prepared for dinner, he chews softly as the conversation turns into one about his eldest brother. glancing at his plate, macaulay immediately feels bad for him because he knows how hard he’s been working to appease them. normally – macaulay will find his voice and speak out for him but this time is different.
the two brothers sit there in silence as the jabs continue. macaulay can practically feel them poking at him with their pitchforks and he’s amazed at their nerve to ruin a quaint family dinner. from across the table, he sees red hues engulf the others sharp features and he shakes his head to caution him. in fact - he’s practically pleading with his brother to let this slide but he knows that’s not him.
macaulay wakes to a gnawing pain in his stomach and he knows almost immediately that she did not come home. they’ve never been apart for longer than a day and despite his illness, macaulay begged to go to school with mabel. he now knows why, and something in him seeks her out, an invisible hand searching in darkness for a body that he knows isn’t there. sadly, mother mott refuses to let him attend school and he’s quick to blame her for her sudden disappearance.
when she turns up a week later, he wants to be angry with her but finds relief in his heart instead. macaulay knows that mabel is different; so within that moment he swears that he will go to the ends of the earth for her. hell. macaulay would even force himself into the “bad place,” just to make sure she was taken care of and safe.
sadly, this meant nothing when the girl refused to talk about the experience and where she went. macaulay would normally intervene and force her to talk but there is no need for this. not when he can sense the real answer just a glance. mabel couldn’t answer the question because not even she knew what transpired that entire week. macaulay was convinced that this all transpired due to their connection to the “bad place.”
macaulay is only ten and he realizes that this is going to end in pure disaster. there is nothing that he can do to comfort the other and that hurt look upon his face only grows worse by the second. when the other excuses himself from the table, macaulay tenses up at the sound of his frustrated grandmother but he thinks of something witty to say, something to draw the attention away from his brother. this is how he comforts the other; by distracting the elders away from their anger with his slick manipulative charm.
prideful that his little distraction worked, macaulay couldn’t help but feel entitled to this sudden attention. his brother wasn’t about to fight for it - so why should he let it go to waste? ultimately his best intentions were at heart and he was merely creating space for the older man.
the fresh crisp grass cracks beneath his feet as he walks hand in hand, beside mabel. from afar he sees their brother, he’s much better now, calmer if his observations are accurate. macaulay understands the reasons behind his behavior but who could blame them when the mott children were literally battling actual demons.
their brother stops in his tracks and looks over at macaulay. the stare is dark and reeks of seriousness. suddenly, macaulay wishes that he could read his mind but knows that he’s asking for too much. the older man would never tell him otherwise and that’s because he doesn’t trust and doesn’t believe he can show emotion. it doesn’t help that mac seems to leech on the beliefs of their parents. yes, macaulay knows that the coven is filled to the brim with old-blood elitists (and women) who carry the scent of death but that is what he’s raised to know. men in their family were the weaker sex and the older mott women are keen to remind them almost often. Especially since the coven had lived through countless eras of persecution and had taken the necessary steps to preserve their birthright in deadwood. soon he’ll be expected to make his sacrifice and wear that same heavy crown.
finally, his brother confesses that he’s ignorant for believing their every word and he politely corrects him on his assumptions. never will his statements anger him and the fact that macaulay remains unaffected speaks of his character. macaulay lets his brother know that he understands his concerns, that he’s not just following orders, but secretly operating his own agenda. he’s doing what pleases him and that macaulay wants to see this family rise from the ashes with pride. this only causes the other man to laugh at him and he walks away in disbelief.
clearly…there is nothing left to say.
even as a child, he preferred night to day. macaulay also enjoyed sitting out in the garden after sunset, under the star-speckled sky listening to frogs and crickets. darkness soothed. it softened the sharp edges of this world, toned down the too-harsh colors. with the coming of twilight, the sky seemed to recede; the universe expanded and the night became larger than the day. in this realm, life seemed to have more possibilities.
he was never the same, the moment the youth realized he was accidentally responsible for his mother’s untimely death. then again, maybe he wasn’t the same since the moment he left his mothers womb? he’s never been invested in this town and always been somewhat emotionally detached from those around him. the darkness has tainted his heart and there is no hope. only despair that drives him.
one of the best things to happen to him was their father moving them from mott manor (temporarily) and forcing them out into the real world. that manor corrupts and holds so many dark secrets that even mac can’t avoid them. then again, if he’s being honest … none of the siblings ever felt comfortable in that home to begin with. it was a cancer eating away at them during their youth and no one would understand the monsters that haunted them there.
there is a darkness inside all of us. though his is more dangerous than most. still, we all have it – that part of our soul that is irreparably damaged by the very trials and tribulations of life. we are what we are because of it, or perhaps in spite of it. some use it as a shield to hide behind, others as an excuse to do unconscionable things. but, truly, the darkness is simply a piece of the whole, neither good nor evil unless one makes it so.
twenty four and the darkness has somehow settled into his heart and he sometimes forgets who he is. still yet – he often wonders if his humanity is even still there? surely it’s just buried beneath all that pride and ambition? was this the life that he wanted? he can’t back out now; nor can he run. then again, he doesn’t want to. darkness has become him and that’s something his siblings are about to learn with the discovery of their father’s death. what is he to do now that he’s without his other half? the boy has no idea of how to cope and sadly his own addictions have numbed him to this existence. with heavy thoughts - he’s turned into himself and lost all sense of direction. already the church of night is starting to question him, the lords have disbanded, and he’s pushed away all his siblings.
maybe there is no hope for him.
✗ MABEL MOTT ( NPC ) - they came into this world together, and he’ll be damned if they don’t leave it together. it is said the boy was nonviable in their mother’s womb and the girl’s gift helped him to life. together they are balance: one brings life and the other death. together they are vessels between the world of the living and the world of decay. two sides of the same coin with their lifelines woven tightly together, the mott twins are closer than most and rarely seen apart. as children they were one another’s first friend, and as adolescents their first loves. their codependence sparked brief rumors around town that in their teen years they were closer than siblings ought to be, but that rumor disappeared as quickly as it came, as if by magic. they have their own separate demons yet deal with them as one. what he feels, she feels; what she feels, he feels. he is her courage, and she his conscience. neither of them are whole when alone.
✗ VALENTINO LENNOX - ♫ character playlist, now playing ♫ he made a wild, extreme and severe relationship rule: the word busy is a load of crap and is most often used by assholes. admittedly, mac was easily labeled as such but he made strides in the budding connection with valentino. the word “busy” was the relationship weapon of mass destruction. it seems like a good excuse, but in fact every silo one uncovers, all one is going to find is a man who didn’t care enough to call. the other man was added to the now disbanded lords, his arrival creating intense friction. the witch had the powers they needed to overcome death - that alone forced his hand. it didn’t hurt the man was able to capture his eye in other ways. a year long relationship, a co-owned nightclub the two managed - all down the drain after a risqué conversation topic pronounced valentino dead to macaulay.
His face claim is LENNY IZAGUIRE and he’s played & written by SHAWN.
