“I wish you good luck. Edward can be difficult.”
“Yes, I am very aware.”
“You have to make a decision before the engagement becomes public.”
“I know. I need to talk to Edward. I need to...be honest with him, and then I can make a decision.”
“Then you will never get what you want, Eilidh.”
“But I don’t even know what I want.”
“You have argued with me in favor of this man. Eilidh, stop worrying about what ifs.”
“I am just too afraid of messing everything up. I...am a coward, Henry.”
“A queen has to make difficult decisions, Eilidh. Some of which may go against the advice they are given. I expect they will, at least, respect your decision and admire it.”
“I still don’t think I can do it. I love him, but I don’t think love is enough..”
“Most likely. You will have to explain why to make them understand. And even then, I imagine it will take some time until they accept it.”
“I can’t do it. I can’t disappoint them like that.”
“Any alliance is useful, especially now in time of war. One day we will all join Scotland and other countries, if all three of us marry into royalty. For now, we can focus on what we want, especially if it involves love.”
“Do you think mum and da will be upset?”
“It would be frowned upon but it is possible. Eilidh, if Leo is a prince then wouldn’t being with him give Scotland another ally? We can find another way to bring England and Scotland together. One that does not involve anyone marrying this soon.”
“Yes, and I guess, an alliance with Portugal may be useful. Not as useful as joining two countries, maybe, but still useful.”
“Is it guaranteed? He could fall for someone and decide to divorce you.”
“Yeah but...we’re royalty. We can’t divorce can we? Especially not if our marriage is all that binds England and Scotland.”
“Definitely not something I want to hear. There is always a chance you will be wrong. Nothing is guaranteed.”
“That is the problem. With Edward, no matter how we feel our future is guaranteed...with Leo, not so much.”
“It is fine, I do not need to know. No, not if you truly love him.”
“Good, because that is so off limits. I do truly love him. I think I do. What if I’m wrong?”
“You said that you didn’t talk to him for three years and now you told me it was difficult. Most people would have forgotten about this person they had sex with. And, you, out of all people, are ready to give up on an important arranged marriage for someone else. I know your responsibilities as first born are important to you.”
“I think it was most difficult because...I don’t know. I really don’t think I can talk about losing my virginity to you. So, you don’t think I’m awful if I decide to call the marriage off?”
“I see…you shouldn’t marry Edward. I think you really do love him and you should see it through.”
“You really think so?”
“That is okay. We will not be on this island forever, we can go home anytime now and you wouldn’t be seeing Leo again, unless you wanted to. Would that make it easier?”
“I don’t know. In theory, yes, distance would probably make me feel less about Leo, but...I also remember how it was the first time we were separated. I couldn’t go through that again, not with the feelings attached.”
“You said you had an affair. Is it worse than that? Both are scary options. On the long run getting married could be harder, unless you were to fall for Edward.”
“I really am not going to tell you. With how I feel about Leo, I don’t know that I could fall for Edward, but maybe if we weren’t on this island... I don’t know, Hen.”
“You were having an affair and I was not aware. I wonder what else you could be hiding from me. Oh, stop it! You do not have to marry him, if you are ready for the consequences.”
“Nothing you will feel better about knowing. I am not sure what I am ready for less: getting married or the consequences of not getting married.”
“To protect us? I…people would not like it. I don’t want to be hated, Eilidh. I’m also not ready to marry. Even if it means I would get to be a king, as I have always dreamed.”
“I’m not like a mafia boss or anything, obviously. My life is just a wee bit...messy, if you will. I’m shocked that you’re not ready to marry at 20. Simply astonished, really.”
