Fire Bending was what Arisa hated most about herself. Though she had passed the test which proved she could Fire Bend at a young age, she still had trouble producing a spark. When she was no more than an infant, she had been taken to the head shaman of the Bhanti, who held bits of a small birch bark mixed with cotton under her nose. The safest way to identify a Fire Bender, all a child would have to do is set the birch ablaze from their breathing. The faster it caught flame, the stronger the bender the child became. Arisa was told hers took minutes to ignite.
It had taken so long, the shaman had almost declared her a non bender. This was unheard of on Bhanti Island. Mostly populated by Fire Benders, all sages, shaman, and apprentices could bend. Those who could manipulate Water or Earth were sent to become part of sage groups of their respective element. When baby Arisa finally lit the birch and cotton, gasps came from the sages scattered around the room. The fire was so tiny, almost a wisp.
Maybe it was best Arisa’s mother had denounced her title of sage and left Bhanti Island with her daughter. She had found herself becoming a Fire nation sympathizer after all. This was against the Bhanti way. Said to be founded even before the first Avatar, the Bhanti strived to keep balance with the spirits and earth. To do so they kept out of the world’s affairs. Those sages who went to other nations swore to do the same. They knew of the hundred-year war but kept a great distance.
Arisa’s mother, Somma, had discovered and eventually sided with the fire nation after saving Arisa’s father. He was said to be high ranking in the Fire Nation Navy. With Arisa barely a year old, Somma left Bhanti Island. The ex-Sage established herself as a great healer, being recognized by the Fire Nation Royal family themselves. Which was why the mother and daughter where at the capital now, observing a fire bending routine performed for the Fire Lord.
The benders kicks and punches released dazzling fire light. It left Arisa speechless and angry. Why couldn’t she do that? Why did nothing but smoke come from the eight-year-old girl’s hands? Other children her age could easily make flames. In fact, the girl on stage, Princess Azula, bent fire like those years ahead of her. The princess was center stage, no doubt to show Fire Lord Azulon how great the kingdom’s future would be. Arisa bit her lip and turned her attention to the ground.
She didn’t understand why her fire barely existed. Maybe it was the Spirits way of punishing her mother for turning on the Bhanti way. The girl went between staring at her feet and the stage. Then after a few minutes she felt a strange sensation. Some one was watching her. Arisa looked around to find out who. She finally found it scanning the crowd. A few feet off, a platform sat above the masses. The Royal family sat atop it. The Fire Lord, his son and daughter in law were all paying attention to the show.
But a boy sitting next to the woman was looking right at Arisa. He had to be only a year older than her. Arisa’s eyes widened at him. The boy’s mouth formed an O when he realized he’d be caught staring. He quickly looked away, red dusting his cheeks. Arisa’s head leaned to the side in confusion until her mother whispered her name and ordered her to watch the show.
The girl looked back just as Princess Azula jumped into the air and kicked. Red and orange fire sprang out into the crowd, Arisa thought she saw bits of blue as well. The princess landed in a crouch and the audience stood to cheer. As the applause died, Fire Lord Azulon stood to congratulate the performers and gave a speech.
“Come, one of my patients wants to meet you Arisa”, Somma said. She took the girl’s hand and led her to the royals’ seated at the platform. As they walked up the side and bowed to the guards, the princess ran up into her father’s arms.
“Excellent my little phoenix” Prince Ozai said as he picked her up. The woman, Princess Ursa, gave her daughter a worried smile while the boy next to her, Prince Zuko, grimaced at Azula. When the guards decided Somma and Arisa where not a threat, they waved the two in. They walked to the royal family and bowed. The Fire Lord, Prince Ozai, and Princess Azula didn’t look to pleased to see them. But Princess Ursa smile turned warm at the sight of the healer.
“Lady Somma, I’m so glad you accepted my invitation to see the Red Phoenixes preform. It’s a joy when the Fire Nation’s best benders put on a show” Princess Ursa greeted. As she spoke Zuko grabbed the older princess’s robes and shrunk into them. The longer Arisa stared, the more he seemed to shrink. Princess Azula noticed and rolled her eyes.
“I was an honor to watch Princess Ursa. I thank both you and the Fire Lord for letting me attend” Somma bowed and Arisa did a beat later. The Fire Lord nodded his head and spoke.
“So, you are the great healer treating my daughter in law. She seems to have gotten better thanks to your… unique treatments.” Using fire bending in healing was new and experimental. It was surprising Fire Lord Azulon had let someone practice it on a member of his family.
“I only wish to serve and hope my treatments will help the future of the Fire Nation”, Somma said. The Fire Lord nodded as Princess Ursa stepped closer to Somma.
“Would you and your daughter like to come to my tearoom for a discussion?” the princess asked. Even Arisa knew this was really a command. Somma nodded. Princess Ursa padded her son’s head, and he let go of her robes. Then she led Somma and Arisa toward the palace. Once they entered a cozy tearoom, the three sat down around a table.
“I was wondering Lady Somma if during your future appointments with me if you could bring your daughter.” Princess Ursa began. Both the healer and her daughter’s eyes widened.
“Of course, Princess, but why?” Somma asked
“I would like young Arisa to be Prince Zuko’s playmate”. the Princess stated. Arisa mouth fell opened. Why would someone want a girl like her, one who couldn’t even fire bend properly, be the playmate of a prince?
The Ball: The Snow Queen and the Guard 2 — literature by Princess-FanFictions on DeviantArt. A re-write of Disney's Frozen with an original
I wanted to have music in my Frozen Fan Fiction from both the original movie and the musical. This chapter of The Snow Queen and the Guard includes the song Dangerous to Dream.
“My power flurries through the air into the ground My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast I'm never going back, the past is in the past”
I Will be Updating the Snow Queen and the Guard today. It will cover the ball scene from the original Frozen movie. The chapter will also jump between the ball and song lyrics from Dangerous to Dream, a song from the Frozen Broadway musical.
Starting a new Frozen art piece, this time based on my Frozen fan fiction The Snow Queen and the Guard. This is how I start a draw. Shapes placed together in a form of something.
