I have recently come into your page, and it's awesome!
I wanted to ask about the backstory of Ariana and Daeron I The Young Dragon. How did they meet and when did they get married?
Hi, thanks so much 😊 it warms my heart that you enjoyed my head canon! So, sorry it’s taken so long to get back to you?! I had to go track down my notes 😊
The background for the head canon, for Daeron and Ariana is a tragic one. Based upon the themes, and symbolism of Romeo and Juliet, or Daemyra to suit Asoiaf universe. A love story with huge implications for the plot, politics, etc. specifically for those who knew of it.
Their meeting would have been during the first invasion of Dorne, in the red mountains. In a game of cat and mouse to capture territory from the pov of the invaders and recapture via the defenders, this was the world their romance was born from. Ariana, who had been traveling to see her half-sister Mariah (Born from Princess Aliandra’s second marriage to Joffrey Dayne) was one of the many caught in the middle and captured in the changing chess board of the mountain’s battles.
It is here they meet, among the hundreds of Dornishmen brought behind enemy lines. From there words are uttered and accusation thrown, lost to time. While here, Ariana comes up with a plan to not only secure the freedom of herself but others, in a bid to help Dorne.
Her plan was seduction (Not for power, but for country, it has a nationalist air, a spy plot) (To gain access to documents and other items to help win) that unfolded further into a passionate affair as they lost themselves in the magic of their connection. This is where they suit Daemyra in a way, they were meant to be burn together.
What led to the blooming of romance was grief. Mariah was killed in an attack of castle Wyl, leaving behind a widower and two young children. Daeron lost his male favorite, emotionally, and then physically.
In a storm grief, clouds of light appeared. This was the beginning of the seeds of tragedy, enemies who weren’t supposed to love one another. They secretly wed in a small ceremony, only between them, eventually leading to the birth of Mariah and Azalia. Who were adopted by Aliandre, taken away from Ariana, one before she went to the red keep as a hostage and the second after she attacked her cousin who killed Daeron in mad grief.
As for the tragedy we know Daeron’s end, but Ariana’s end was equally tragic. Her children taken away, locked away in a tower for many years, and then wed to lord Yronwood to prevent a rebellion…. By the end she was like Rhaena the black bride, broken and lost in a storm of what could have been.
One day, the story of Ariana and Daeron will definitely be written.
