Patient Files: Mermaid Syndrome
Story by Evelyn Elliott / original
When I was little, I always wanted to help people. I was an avid Harry Potter fan, and I fantasized that one day my letter would come. Once I realized that Hogwarts wasn’t real, I fantasized about being a doctor or an engineer instead. I’m doubly blessed, I guess: I’m not just creative, I’m smart.
I help people that traditional hospitals will not.
Most of my patients are the same. Their insurance screwed them over. Their doctor won’t take them seriously. The nurses won’t give them the right medication. That kind of thing. My most recent patient, Chloe, told me that her parents would not even believe that her medical condition was real, and they outright refused to take her to a hospital.

I gave her some morphine and lay her on steel table in my basement. Often the morphine is not strong enough; that’s why I have restraints on the table, now. Sometimes patients wake up mid-surgery and start to panic before I finish, so the restraints help keep them down.
First I cut her fingers. I carefully sliced through the skin on each side of each finger, then sewed them together. You see, when you stick two pieces of living flesh together, they heal together. When her fingers healed, they would heal together. Permanent fins. I did the same to her legs, but that was more difficult. I delicately cut away her skin and sewed together her legs.
