Works from Łukasz Stokłos' exhibition Cries and Whispers
The exhibition is named after Ingmar Bergman’s 1972 film Cries and Whispers in which two sisters watch over a third in the last agonizing days of her life. Set in the gilded, red-saturated rooms of their family castle, this story of the sisters’ and, in turn, the house’s indi!erence to su!ering achieves the same dissonance in its adherence to ritual. Stoklosa’s and Bergman’s scenes share a filmic grandiosity and endeavor to capture within them the horrors of history that objects ignore.

Edward Hopper: Domingo (1926)
“The only way you’re getting on that plane is if I can take the ashes out of this bag!”
“Be my guest.” He reached for five small white plastic trays, you know, like the ones you puts your change and keys on, before going through the security arch, and began pouring Mark Morrisroe (aka THE LOVED ONE) onto the counter. I turned around to look at the line of people waiting to take late night flights to Seattle, Phoenix, and Boise. They all looked like Edvard Munch’s painting The Scream. The original reservation clerk was further down the counter softly crying as mound after mound of Mark’s ashes were emptied out onto the trays. Finally, we watched a clump of metal fall out onto the last tray.
