“Tests say I should have gone home right after treatment-”, this is not what the results concluded, “-but the doctors say, Alex, we love you, stay here, we’re forcing you.” Alex watched her shrug her injuries off. He understood that Priya did not want to make a big deal out of her injuries, as he felt with his own. But her words startled him, why wouldn’t he be chill about her attack? He was always chill, well, unless he was being extra. “What’s no big deal?”

“Yes, I’m sure that’s why they’re keeping you, Alex. They just can’t bear to let you go just yet.” Priya was suspicious, but she’d let it go for now. “Okay! So,” Iya spoke on a large exhale. How was she suppose to tell this story? Her heart was already racing. “In case you didn’t know by now, Zach is a vampire. Or, like, half vampire. I’ve known for a while, so it’s normal as hell to me. But he recently got exposed, if you will, because he got scratched by one of the werewolves at the party. It trigged something in him, he lost control, and he attacked someone. I tried to stop him and he, not in his right mind, attacked me too. I’m totally okay, like there are people who were hurt way worse than I was, so it’s fine.”

“You don’t get it.” Zach said, even though he definitely was beating himself up way too hard for it. “Wait til Ardan gets a load of this.” He muttered, shaking his head and getting up. He walked around the hospital bed before sitting down closer to her on the edge of the bed. “That’s like saying it’s okay if someone accidentally stabs you a few times and you pass out from blood loss. It’s not okay! And I wish you’d yell at me. But you’re just as stubborn as me.” Zach was quiet for a moment and he shrugged. They’d just keep arguing back and forth and Priya just woke up. “People are gonna hate me or be mad at me. Half breeds, you know. Don’t get a lot of… kindness. Which is why only you and a couple other people knew about me, but that’s fucked now. I don’t want you defending me, though. You’re such a Gryffindor and it’s so like you to do that shit if someone was mean to me. Even better, you should pretend you don’t know me until this all dies down.”

Priya rolled her eyes. “Ardan...” Priya wanted to say she had no idea how he’d react, but she did. She wanted to joke about how he’d be stupidly pissed, and that she wishes he would just chill, but now wasn’t the time for a joke like that. “Oh my god, no one could accidentally stab you a few times. Once, at the most. Any more than that and it was definitely on purpose. You did not stab me a few times. This is different, Zach. Hey, if you want me to yell at you, I can. It won’t be for what you want it to be for, though.” Priya slumped against the cold metal headboard. “Yeah, they will be. Even though I’m not mad at you for it, I do recognize that what you did was not okay. People aren’t going to let it go very easily.” She sighed. Yeah, Priya knew where he was coming from, why he didn’t want her defending him. That’d be difficult for her, and she knew that Zach knew that. 

“Wait-” Priya’s brows furrowed, her mouth slightly agape. Did he really just suggest that? She wasn’t offended, regardless of her incredulous expression. How could Zach even think that was a good idea in the slightest? “Okay, I am going to explain right now why that’s an awful idea and wouldn’t work at all, okay? Fault number one: literally everyone- EVERYONE- that knows at least one of us is more than aware of our friendship. You’re probably featured more on my twitter than I am. Fault number two: I’m a shit actor! Dude. You know this. Fault number three: no! There is no way I can do that. I mean...” Priya sighed, running her hand down her face in frustration. “I can avoid talking about it. I can tell people to fuck off if they bring it up, or something. I could try to bite my tongue. Keyword is try."

Zach gaped at Priya before looking away. Oh, he was so tired of people looking it over and making excuses and defending him and everything. He was so tired of it. Now that most of everyone knew what he was, some were rightfully afraid, but he found his friends mostly weren’t upset and still wanted to be close to him. It was downright ludicrous. “Yeah, yeah, yeah, well, I’m up and running now but you’re still in the hospital bed because of me, aren’t you? Caring about my wellbeing, please.” He said, shooting Priya a look and crossing his arms over his chest. “You are biased, by the way. Which… is apparently a side effect of being my friend for quite a few people. You know i would’ve killed you if I wasn’t stopped. I think I had to be yanked off of you or something. I was going in for it. It is ridiculous that you’re here telling me that you’re worried about my wellbeing after hat I did. Ridiculous.”

“Yeah, you know what? You’re right. I’m here feeling kind of awful because of something you did. But I’m just-” Priya flung her arms around, letting her frustration out with a sigh. She didn’t know what to say. Priya had no idea why she wasn’t mad. It’d be easier at this point to pretend she was. “I’m just not, okay? Can’t explain it.” Yeah, yeah, she was biased. But Priya couldn’t change that. At least not voluntarily. “You totally could have killed me. I could be completely dead right now! But I’m not fucking here to talk about what could have happened. I’m not dead. You didn’t kill me. I’m super alive. Can you stop arguing with me about how I should be feeling right now? I don’t think it’s going to change a thing.” She sighed, closing her eyes. “You know, it’d be different if it was on purpose.”

“No but I can identify at least one person who stepped on me. It was that old-ass man who graduated like six years ago but still showed up to the party and of course stepped all up on me while trying to escape.” Alex shook his head and stuffed a spoonful of pudding into his mouth. “I for sure had a concussion. Like five of them at once. Because some old-ass man stepped all over me while I was unconscious.” Bitter. “The fuck?” He pulled a face, putting down the empty cup of pudding. “What’chu mean you had a crazy amount of blood loss but are ‘fine now’? Take a seat.” He gestured to the chair beside his bed. “Let’s start with how the hell you got hurt?”

“Ew. Why does he still show up?” Priya physically cringed thinking of all of those old weirdos who couldn’t let go of uni days. “Holy shit. How are you feeling now? Should I ask the predient question?” She was making a joke, sure, but Priya was genuinly worried for her friend. “What have the tests said so far? I’m assuming they’ve done some tests.” She leaned foward in her seat, resting her elbows on her knees. “I’m serious, I’m fine. I’m a bit weak and tired, but like, nothing new.” She shrugged it off with a laugh. Realistically, she knew he wasn’t going to let it go. “Okay. If I tell you, can you promise to be chill about it? Like it’s no big deal. I’m seriously fine, Alex.”

Zach’s eyes narrowed slightly in disbelief that Priya was still laughing. He sighed heavily and looked away, waiting for her to just stop. “Have you quite finished?” He asked when he felt she might’ve. He sighed once more, his expression softening because he shouldn’t be annoyed or upset. Priya should be, though. He felt a lot of people weren’t upset at him when they should be most times. He crossed his arms over his chest and wished he could say he didn’t remember how anything went, but he did. Every bit of it. “I got scratched by a werewolf, okay? And… and then the danger was gone but I was so sick. And then I feel like I passed out for a moment and thought I’d die and I woke up and… and something snapped. And I just… all I could see was read and all I could think about was how hungry I was and ripping you and Isadora’s throats out. And Eli but he stopped me. Stunned me.” He sighed and shook his head, his hand going to cover his face in guilt and self hatred. “I can’t believe I lost myself enough to hurt you of all people.”

Priya listened. It sounded like a confession to her. Couldn’t anyone in their right mind see that he wasn’t in his right mind? It was clear he knew better. Clear to Priya, at least. She knew him, and she could see the amount of regret in his eyes.  How could she be mad at him for something that clearly wasn’t intentional? She knew, though, that others might not see it that way. “Thank you for telling me what happened, Zach.” It was all probably difficult to think about, let alone talk about. Although, he probably couldn’t stop thinking about it. “I know you’re mad at yourself. You have the right to be, and I understand why you are. You did something that was outside of who you are and you’re not proud of it. I also know that you think I should be mad. Maybe I should be, but I’m not. I’m just... not. You’re my best friend, you know that? I care more about your wellbeing than you might think I do. Call me, like, biased or something. I’m just not angry.”

Alex was in and out of sleep throughout the night. At first, he had not been allowed to sleep, and then he’d been given something to take to heal any damage done to his head by the fall. The potion put him in a clouded daze and he had spent hours half-asleep, half-attempting to recall the events of the night. He remembered a feeling of dread. He remembered being shit faced. He remembered falling and getting knocked around in the chaos.

He was regaining his full sense of self when Priya marched in. “Priyaaaaa my dude. M’not entirely sure. Got lost in the chaos and hit my head. Broke my hand as well but they mended it while I was out.” He held the chocolate pudding in his hand up to greet her in a toast, but then noticed the intake band on her wrist and his spirit fell. “What happened?”

“So no one attacked you? They’d be getting a pretty good ass-kicking, I’ll tell you that, homie. Head okay? No concussion, or anything? What is it that they usually ask in movies when someone has a concussion? Something about a united states president, or whatever.” Priya dropped into the chair beside his bed, letting her exhaustion pull her down. She perked up slightly when he noticed her band. “Oh, nothing bad.” She dismissed it in efforts to calm his concerns. To her, it really was nothing. For the most part. But Priya figured that anyone else might not take it so lightly. “I got hurt, had a crraazzy amount of blood loss, ultimately passed out. ‘M fine now, though! Hella tired from the chaos.”

Zach left the hospital the day he woke up from it, but returned the next day to visit those he hurt. Hurting Priya and Isadora the way he had was… horrific. He knew it wasn’t really him—that stupid werewolf scratch fucked him up pretty good—but he was reminded of when he did kill someone. And even then, they didn’t feel pain. Just a lot of good until they passed out and Zach didn’t stop. He wouldn’t have stopped the other night if people didn’t interfere. He just never thought he’d ever hurt his best friend. But here he was looking at her so sadly and so scared she’d rip his head off—as she should, too. But when she woke, Zach sighed in relief but waited for her yelling. Except, it didn’t come. At all. It was just laughter. Zach’s worried grimace faded into him gaping at her and staring. What was wrong with her? “This isn’t funny.” He said, truly incapable of laughing it off. It’s not something you laugh off, is it? “Priya!” He said, sighing heavily and shaking his head. “Why aren’t you mad?”

“I’m sorry- I’m so sorry, I just-” She broke into another fit of giggles, this time partially hiding her face behind her hands. No, it wasn’t funny. In no way was any of it funny. Zach probably felt terrible for what he did, and while laughing might not make it entirely worse, it probably wasn’t making it any better either. Priya managed to calm herself down enough to speak, at least. “I’m sorry. I know it’s not funny, and I’m sorry. It’s just... I don’t know?” Priya was very unsure about a lot of things, namely how she felt and why she was expressing it this way. “I don’t know, Zach. I know I should be mad, but I’m not.” Should she feel hurt? Fearful? Priya thought maybe she should, but she couldn’t conjure those feelings in the slightest. Priya didn’t know how to be afraid of Zach. Maybe a bit, of what he was capable of, but not of him. He was her best friend. She could never imagine Zach hurting her intentionally. If he had done it in earnest, then sure, she would be mad. “What happened? From your point of view. The whole story, I mean.”

It truly warmed Zach’s heart to see just how affectionate Priya was with a potential new pet. She didn’t adopt him yet, after all, but Zach was sure Priya was dead set on it. He smiled even more when Dr. Memersworth nuzzled her. “I’m just making sure you got what I mean.” He pulled out his phone because Iya’s smile right about now was too fucking much and pretty comical when it was compared to the cat’s face. He snapped a photo and put it on snapchat before laughing and showering her to the toys. “Alright, come. All the toys. How much money do even have? We have to know your budget. Let’s go to the necessities instead like…” Zach pulled out a litter box and sand with both of his arms before setting it right in front of her feet. “This big thing.”

Although Priya was still feeling as if her heart was going to explode with excitement, she was too distracted by her kitty’s cuteness to scream about it any longer. Although, he didn’t seem too bothered by her excitement before, which, thank god. “I got what you meant, Zachy. Thank you.” Priya’s smile widened, bringing Memers closer to her for the photo. “I took out, like, twenty-five galleons. I already did all of my necessary shipping and I think I have eighteen left.” Yes, necessities. Priya could totally blow her money on every feather-y cat toy they have, but how responsible would that be, really? “Ohh, that’s important. He gotta poop. How much is it?”

Priya totally could have made a scene– it would not have been out of character, but she was trying to find her friend, and making a scene in a hospital would certainly draw the wrong type of attention. Especially considering that she was technically still a patient herself. In the typical case of Alex getting hurt, she’d make sure it wasn’t serious, then laugh at him for it. But she didn’t know if he was okay now. He could have been bitten, for all she knew. When Priya found him, she didn’t bother with manners or formalities before barging in, letting out a sigh when she saw that he was awake, and more importantly, alive. “Well you’re not dead, that’s a start. What happened? How badly are you hurt?”

Priya’s entire body was sore, head was almost pulsing, and she didn’t really know where she was. A quick look around the room told her that she was in some sort of hospital–probably St. Mungo’s, because of course–and the reason why she would be there was surprisingly clear in her mind. Zach was sitting in the chair beside her bed, watching her, probably waiting for some sort of explosion. But Priya didn’t know what to say. She didn’t think she was angry, or even upset in any way. Should she be? Death could have easily been knocking on her door if-- well, she didn’t know how her friend ended up not killing her, but she wasn’t dead, therefore something must have happened. So no, Priya wasn’t mad. But how was she suppose to react now? Was laughing approprate? Of course it wasn’t–so why was she laughing?

It’s so good.”

“You know what I’ve always thought was completely underrated?” Alex asked as he dully twirled his spaghetti around his fork, the other hand was occupied with his phone. “Groupon. Like I just got seven spin classes for thirty of muggle money. Brilliant.” He sat his phone down, taking a mouth full of the pasta. “So. Wanna wing-woman for me at this Valentine’s thing? It’ll be fu-un.”

“Ohh! Gimme! I want to see the spin classes. Of course you’d be taking spin classes.” Priya spoke through her stuffed faces as she reached out for his phone, because who needed manners? “Maybe we could get James to agree to a team bonding activity. Group spin class. It’s perfect!” He might actually agree to it if the deal is good. “Of co-ourse. I'm the queen of wing-woman-ing. I’m great at talking to strangers, I love talking in general, and I have no moral hangups about exaggerating the truth or spinning something to look positive. Queen of this.”

“You are so dramatic. But I understand entirely. And you won’t die! Mostly because you’ll be able to hold him forever if you take good care of him.” Zach said. He thought that a pet could actually be good for Priya. She’d have someone to take care and wouldn’t always be too over worried about her own self. “Dr. Meme—” his voice fell back and he scratched the back of his head. Only Priya would be that type of person to rename an adopted cat. “I think Jinx is a nice name though and he like… answers to it. But do as you want I guess.” Only Priya. He smiled warmly, happy to hear she was thinking the same as him. This could be good for her. “This isn’t just a pet shop. You don’t buy pets here, you adopt them. Pet shops are bad. But I believe you. I believe he’ll be in very good hands.” He grinned brightly and clapped his hands once. “So! Let’s pick out food and toys and a bed and a litter box and you’ll be all set!”

“I know, but I’m serious! I love him. I feel so much love in my heart right now, I’m having a hard time not crying.” Priya cuddled the kitty closer to her, mumbling ‘you’re so cute’ and ‘I love you with all my heart’ every few seconds. “Yes! Dr. Memersworth. Come on, Zach. It’s cute and he clearly loves it. Right, buddy?” She asked him directly, getting a nuzzle in response. That was more than satisfactory for her. Iya rolled her eyes a bit. “Okay, okay. Not a pet shop. Pet shops are awful. You got what I meant.” Hearing ‘I believe you’ wasn’t exactly an ‘I believe in you’, but it had the same effect on her. Just the right amount of affirmation.If Zach thought that she could do this, she definitely could. “Oh my god, Memers, you are going to be the most spoiled baby in the whole world. Zach, I’m gonna get him so many toys.” Her grin was ear to ear, and it would probably be hard to believe that she was actually containing some of her excitement.

“OH! YES, THIS IS REASON FOR CELEBRATION!” Priya cheered, joining in on the dancing and twirling. It was fun, regardless of her lack of intoxication. She continued to try to sing along, but her words quickly reduced to a series of la’s and doo’s. “You know what, Henry? I’m really glad you didn’t die. Super glad.”

A smile slowly overtook Zach’s features. Oh Priya. She as so fucking funny. And spontaneous. This could end up really good or really bad. He walked right over her, his hands behind his back. and his amused smile still on his face. “Yeah, yeah, his name’s Jinx. And he’s 3 galleons. Plus everything else like… a litter box and food and a bed and toys. But he’s very cute and lovable and needs love. Also has this little bent ear and it’s cute and sad.” Zach gently touched the tip of the cat’s ear, and it twitched. “Can you take care of him? Like really. I have a cat and now there’s a dog in the mix because of my… roommate. And I can tell you cats aren’t as exhausting as dogs, but they’re still exhausting. So.” He looked at her seriously and crossed his arms over his chest. “I need your word that you’re gonna love him and care for him really well.”

“Zach, I love him with my entire soul. I think I might die if I can’t hold him for the rest of my life.” She was nothing if not dramatic. And of course, she knew that taking care of a pet would be a lot of work. But the reality of the situation was that she was lonely and needed a furry friend in her life. Her phone would be on cat care-taking articles for the rest of her life, but it felt worth it when she looked at the little guy’s face. “Dr. Memersworth. I’d pay ten, I swear to Merlin. Zach, I know.” Her voice droned slightly. “I can try my very best, Zach. Maybe this is what I need! Maybe I need something I can be totally accountable for. And come on, you know I’ll love him with my whole heart for the rest of my life. The last time we visited a pet shop I cried because I loved them all so much! Zach, I’ll care for him and love him forever. I promise.”

“If you get him as a pet,” Zach said, pointing to one of the many cats. “they’re guaranteed to get you people over your dorm or flat. Even if it’s for your pet, people’ll come over. And then people’ll love you because it means you’re a cat person. And puffskeins are hdoliuandy because they clean up your bogeys while you’re sleeping, so you really can’t lose with either. Or any other pet you choose to adopt. But I’ll be here when you do. Or if you do.”

Priya’s entire body was taken over by excitement. She couldn’t even breathe, she was so excited. Her heart seemed to literally beat out of her chest. The cat in her arms nuzzled closer to her face and she nearly choked out a sob. “Zaaaaccchhhh. Help.” She had no idea if she was responsible enough to take care of an entire cat. But if she was anything, she was impulsive. “Zach, I need help. I need him. I need this cat. I’m so happy right now I could cry.” Priya’s voice came out in more of a guttural rasp than anything else, she was so excited. Visiting Zach at work was definitely proving to be a bad idea.
