       as much as she wanted to just enjoy herself here, josie couldn’t entirely deny that this was anything but a vacation. ‘ you don’t have to do that ‘ she said, frowning slightly. ‘ i know this isn’t just some family holiday in the tropics. i want to enjoy it here, but that doesn’t mean i can’t also help, sometimes. ‘ she wasn’t a fan of the idea that she needed chaperones, either - surely by now she could be trusted to take care of herself? ‘ that sounds nice. i’ve missed you, ‘  josie added, smiling at her big sister. it had been far too long, and in times like these, they needed family more than ever.

he would have laughed at her attempt to fool him, had it not been for the move that took his pawn. then he laughed, truly amused that she’d seen it. before replying, he hummed, and moved his remaining rook five spaces to the left, right in front of her king. another bishop lay in wait to check her again if she moved the piece that was in its path. “check.” he looked upon her, canting his head to the side in question. “if it was me? well… i’d cut their legs off first so they can’t run. metaphorically, of course. i mean: there’s a reason that they’ve gotten to where they are. find out how they had the power to even do what they’ve done first, and power usually comes from money… so… i suggest you look at their assets. follow the paper trail. dig dirt. do some legwork. where do they get their strength? what’s protecting them from you? you have to take all these factors into consideration before you mount an attack. which… is precisely what you should be doing to me right now, by the way. do you see it?”

        josie watched his move, frowning as she realised that, once again, he had her cornered. this required some careful thought, but she found herself listening to him even as she contemplated hr next move. maybe it was josie’s lack of experience in these things, but as far as she was concerned, arthur’s advice was seemed pretty brilliant. she nodded along to his words, more than willing to take them on board. ‘ louise has probably already done all of that, though, ‘ she pointed out with a sigh. was there really anything that she could do that her sister wouldn’t have already started? probably not, but it was good to know, these things just in case. ‘ maybe there’s something she’s missed, though. i guess it couldn’t hurt to look. ‘ it’d give her something to do, at least, and then maybe she’d feel less useless. a frown took over her face when she realised that, distracted by their conversation, she’d stopped focusing on the game at hand. ber options were limited, and all she could do was move her queen to take his rook - but josie had a bad feeling she was making a mistake, even as she placed the piece down and looked up at him with a look of feigned confidence.

henri was sure of a lot of things. right now, one of those things was his standing with the world. specifically, the belgians. which was why he was standing where he was: the doorstep of their villa, peace offering in hand ( a basket of fresh fruit, expensive cheese, chocolates of all varieties, among other things ) dressed in his finest dress pants and a freshly pressed button-down. he’d timed his visit specifically so that it coincided with louise being out of the villa and josephine being in it. he knew he’d get nowhere with the elder sister, but the youngest he could work with. he took a breath, knocked on the door, and waited. if he could pull this off, he could do anything.

       today was the kind of day where josie had just decided to stay in their luxurious villa, relaxing and enjoying all that it had to offer. it was paradise, even if the rest of the world was falling apart. no wonder louise had disappeared to go and play her part as crown princess, but without those same responsibilities josie was able to have some time to herself. hearing a knock on the door, the princess went to see who was there, expecting room service - and blinking in surprise when she instead found a french prince with a gift basket in hand. ‘ um - hello? ‘ she said, confusion written all over her face. what was he doing here? was this meant to be some kind of poor attempt at an apology for his family’s actions? if so, she wasn’t about to accept. distrusting immediately, she added bluntly, ‘ what are you here for? ‘

“Something,” an index taps tapped her chin at a steady pace. “Define something. There’s definitely trouble to be found around here if you happen to stumble upon the right person but I prefer the gossiping aspect of that ordeal. Like, I’ve heard your sister is doubling down against…France? That’s inspiring.”

       josie shrugged, thinking for a moment. ‘ i don’t want to get into any trouble, ‘ she clarified ; that was the last thing in the world she wanted. ‘ it’d be nice to do something fun, though, don’t you think? ‘ or maybe she was hoping for the impossible, who knew. ‘ that’s...complicated, i think. but you’re right, we’re not going to take what they’re trying to do lying down. i know louise has plans, but...well, i don’t know what they are, yet. ‘

sera smiled and reached up to tuck some hair behind her ear. “thanks, babe! i think the sun will be good for you, too. just remember sunscreen.” at the mention of shopping, she nodded excitedly. “yes, i would love to go shopping. i’m in dire need of new shoes, and i’d love to help you expand your wardrobe. i think you would look super cute in, like, a mini sundress with a wide-brimmed hat, maybe with some corkscrew wedges? just super beachy and cute.” and then she reached down to pull out another champagne glass and poured some of the bubbling liquid for her friend. “it’s pol roger, some of the best,” she explained as she slid the glass across the bar.

          ‘ i’ll be covering myself in the best sunscreen i can find, ‘ josie said, laughing. getting burned didn’t sound any fun at all. ‘ well then - who am i to stand between you and new shoes? i guess some more summer casual things would be nice, too. if we’re going to be here, we might as well embrace it, right? ‘ it would be different, but there was nothing wrong with that. her nose screwed up at the mention of hte champagne. ‘ isn’t that french? because i’ve decided that i’m boycotting everything french at the moment. i refuse to have anything to do with the entire country of france. ‘

moving her knight gave him an opportunity to take a pawn that was in the way of his own. one more move, and he’d have a queen in position to corner her king, having lost it early in the game on purpose – provided, of course, that she didn’t see any other opportunity to corner him instead. her sarcasm was received with indifference, and he paid more attention to her assessment of belgium’s crown heir than anything else. “anger is a good emotion, but don’t let it distract you or dishearten you from anything else.” he sat back again, hands crossed over his stomach as he reclined a little. “you can do something about it. have you asked louise about your options? betrayals like that aren’t to be taken lightly, after all. rebellion against the crown’s wishes in any sort of way must be met with the strictest hand. if you lose sight of the power you have now, and all the ways you can do to maintain it, then what use will this advantage be once it’s taken right from under you?”

     josie frowned again as he made his move, seeing her error clearly. he was getting too close, and she was going to be in trouble if she didn’t do something about it, and fast. ‘ interesting, ‘ she murmured, trying to play it cool and probably failing terribly. it gave her a few more moments to think, though, and she needed them. finally, she slid her own piece across the board, taking his pawn - and hoping that was the right move. ‘ anger is horrible. i hate feeling like this, it’s like i just want to scream. ‘ she’d never been the type to throw tantrums, though. ‘ louise and i don’t really...talk about this kind of thing, ‘ josie admitted. part of it was just louise being protective, and part of it was her own uncertainty - how could she help, when she had no idea where to start? ‘ it’s not like we can start beheading people. it’s not the nineteenth century, you know, ‘ she pointed out. there was only so many ways they could exert their power. looking over at him, josie asked, ‘ what would you do, if it was you? ‘ he at least had some experience with politics, and she was curious to know how he’d react in their position.

         josie laughed - natalia hadn’t exactly been subtle. ‘ i’m not above bribery,‘ she teased, head shaking. if a friend asked her for help, josie could rarely bring herself to say no. her eyes widened as the other showed her the dress she’d chosen. ‘ that’s...are we sure that’s actually meant to be worn by itself? ‘ she asked, starting to feel nervous about the amount of skin she’d be showing. ‘ i’m sure it’d look...very cool, but it doesn’t look very comfortable. ‘ then again, she’d wanted to try something different - was she really going to back out now?

    ‘ well, i just googled sexual positions to try and have a good answer. but as it turns out, almost all of them sound pretty unfeasible to me. are people really that flexible? it just doesn’t seem realistic. ‘
