I cannot get over his voice in this song. And on The Loneliness. It's just SO beautiful, SO powerful, SO rich.

I don't think I can get over his voice on any song at this point, it really is just so beautiful and just the layers of emotion in it runs the gamut across even the songs we've heard so far, I can't begin to imagine what else we're going to get! It's always so delightful too hearing from people who know a lot more about music than me, whether they be Jacob or Daniel or other fans, and the NYCC clip truly gets me every time. God, I can't believe we're hours away, and this is making me so curious as to whether or not we'll get a new song in 3.01 or if it'll be songs we've already heard!
I've seen people speculate that they might literally use this concert footage in episode 7 or next season even, but that seems hard to believe...though I guess not impossible.....
They could for a few cutaways, but I'd say it's pretty unlikely, especially if none of DOPs or directors were managing that creatively (also I think they've confirmed that post has been finished for a while). It does seem like AMC's going to distribute it as a concert in and of itself now, but even beyond that, I think it's much more likely that they'll be using that footage for a bit of general promo, and probably a lot of stakeholder engagement, which I talked about a little in this post.
Something that interests me is that Jennifer singled that scene out as *the* scene "that has been adapted perfectly for your character": "the way that that is realized and told, it's really--it gets something. Nails it."
It's a big alteration to make her want to kill them rather than just be done with them, but that sounds like there is more to the scene than just an intention for us to enjoy them getting bloody revenge on their asshole family. If it was just that, that doesn't seem hard to do, so I would not expect that to be a scene she singled out. So I am very interested to see what they do with it.
Yeah, I hope so, anon! I can't imagine it would've been a change made lightly or without specific creative intention, so like I said the other day, I'm hopeful the compromise will be worth it, whatever they do.
given Rolin's already said this book's split in two too
might not be a point in even talking about this until we see the full season, but do you have any surmises on what this means? Because Rolin has said at least twice that this is part one of two and they won't do the whole book this season. Hannah said in that vulture piece that the season “'more or less' adapts the entirety of Rice’s same-named novel", but "more or less" is very vague, while Rolin has been really definitive about not the whole book/part 1 of 2. So what do you think they mean? Beyond being sure that they won't go into Marius's history this season, I don't know. And do you think QOTD is going to take place entirely next season, or would it bleed into a season 5? QOTD seems to me like it might not need an entire season solely to itself.
(x)
Yeah! I mean, it's hard to tell at this stage, of course, but I suspect Lestat's narrative arc will be largely adapted this season, I think it's more the other character chapters that won't be, so Marius' and I actually think Armand's too will mostly be pushed back to s4, along with the bulk of that vampiric lore section of the book. I suspect there are certain things they're also just not going to be adapting like the Vampire Queen (I actually tend to think Daciana in 2.01 was supposed to be a little bit of a nod to her), and I lowkey think the attack on the concert (although I admittedly could be very wrong there, haha), and things that will be shifted more to the contemporary timeline like the Devil's Road and I'm starting to suspect a fair bit of the Lestat-Armand-(and-Gabrielle) dynamic too.
With QOTD, maybe? I said way back after s2 finished that I thought it made the most sense to adapt TVL and QOTD over three seasons, especially as they're such a duology in the broader series, and I kind of do wonder if that's what they're doing, with added bits of the other books for good measure. If they are pushing Marius and Armand's backstory to s3, I could see them drawing more heavily from TVA, Blood and Gold and Pandora in an s4, and I think I've mentioned this before, but going deeper maybe into the fledgling-maker dynamics before whizzing us up to Akasha as the mother of vampires / original maker for that arc. I think I mentioned it the other day too, but I wonder if that might be a part of what an s4 TVL structure looks like, if there's a search for Marius again that maybe takes us back on The Devil's Road and is the vehicle for that?
This is all though, of course, flagrant speculation, haha, it's impossible to tell at this point really. What do you guys think?
People who have seen season said wait and see about Gabistat killing their family. They also said kids won't be killed, which is already huge relief.
I've been thinking, those people emphasize that it's something to do with Gabriela. Perhaps, it's more of a mercy kill on Lestat's part? Like him having to finish Gabriela's job?
Or I can see possibility of guilt trip on her part. Maybe she presses how she sent Lestat to monastery and got him dogs and helped him go to Paris? And Lestat can't even kill people who abused him and her?
Putting my reply below a cut for discussion, just because of the spoilery nature of this convo!
Mm, I mean, I'm glad that Gabrielle and Lestat won't be killing the children if that is the case, but it's hard to know what that means in the context of the story because their deaths feel thematically important to me in the book? It's not just the senselessness of the children being killed by the mob too, and the brutality of the French Revolution, but the fact that it marked the end of the de Lioncourt line and the complete dissolution of the family outside of Lestat, Gabrielle and the Marquis, which is then further splintered by Gabrielle's choice to leave him. The death of the children is what makes the death of the family a full stop, not a comma, because without them, there is no future, and it's that, I think, that compounds Lestat's isolation in the world.
On a character level too, what does it mean if the children are alive but their parents killed? Does Lestat use Magnus' money to ensure they're provided for into the future? That could maybe work, paralleling less Lestat's care for his father (his nieces and nephews don't abuse him the same way his father does, of course), but his continued patronage of the Theatres des Vampires, even if it does undermine some of those themes above. It also though does beg the question of how those children would be raised with the rest of the family dead, and if the de Lioncourt chateau is never taken, how does Lestat's relationship to it end or change, and, of course, whether we think Lestat would ever fully remove himself from their lives, particularly if he felt they needed him? I'm not saying that couldn't work (in some ways, I think his family lineage becoming a TdV parallel where it's something unrecognisable to him by the time he may one day try to return to it could work), but it is a significant change, y'know?
In terms of them going back though, I can see the show using it as a depiction of Gabrielle's influence on Lestat, but the big I guess barrier for me at this stage without having seen it is that I don't know what Gabrielle's motivation for going back would be except revenge at this stage, and that just isn't really a part of her character to me, especially after she's left the Auvergne (although I am wondering increasingly if she won't ever leave the Auvergne and if that could possibly be a part of it?) I've always thought Gabrielle's choice to never look back, even for revenge, after she was turned is a deeply compelling part of her character and the key to her capacity for survival, as well as a huge juxtaposition to most of the other characters, who despite themselves, can't stop looking back. Honestly, I also just think it's more interesting than another abuser revenge story. I'm keeping an open mind though, I promise, haha, but - - yeah. It's definitely the thing at this point that concerns me the most.
I don't mean this as toxic positivity because of course we can only react as we watch, and that's what the show intends for us to do, but I am trying to remind myself that I need to wait until I see episode 7 before forming any firm conclusions if I don't like something. Because I was not here for season 2 but omg if I had had spoilers about the episodes only through episode 4, or only through 7, I would have had a wildly different impression and many worries about the season that ended up not being true.
I'm so excited to finally watch it and experience it all.
I don't think that's toxic positivity at all, anon, I think that's a pretty sensible way to watch the season given how this show tends to be structured! They've also been pretty clear that Lestat's going to be an unreliable narrator too, and specifically lie about certain things or present them certain ways that I imagine this show will unravel in a different, but not dissimilar way they did Louis' memories across the season (or hell, seasons, given Rolin's already said this book's split in two too). It's great to unpack the episodes as they're airing in that sense, but it definitely feels like the sort of show to me where it's best to temper opinions until you have the context of the full season a lot of the time.
And yeah, re: the spoilers, there are so many floating around right now, and a lot of them are even conflicting with each other for what I imagine is a whole range of reasons, so I think it's best just to put them pretty well aside before you watch and experience it for yourself! Which we're about to be able to do! Eeee, I am very excited too, haha.
SOPHIE how long till s3 drops in your area? Are you planning on watching it in the morning ?
I think in 22-hours exactly! They said on their Australian Facebook page that it'll drop here at 5pm AEST 7 June (pic below), although I've read that a lot of people are expecting it to drop in the morning, so I guess I'll just wake up and see! If it's at 5pm, I'll definitely watch it then, but if it drops in the morning, I'll have to try and carve out some time among the earlier life-chaos, haha.
It's so exciting, and I totally agree, anon! While I am still a little worried about a few of the plot points and the show's handling of Gabi in particular, the reviews overall have really indicated that the show's committed to the themes, philosophy and spirit of the book, which in some ways is really the most you can hope for of an adaptation. I can't believe it's finally here! 40 years in the making!
That doesn't necessarily mean that the costume department starts small, however. During an early episode, Lestat gives "the paps my pussycat," as he puts it, or in layman's terms, struts the red carpet like it's going out of style. He wears a fuschia colored silk chiffon custom suit, complete with a tightly bound bodice that gives him an effervescent glow, especially once he strolls into the club to join his band. The imagery is so dazzling, it puts The Birth of Venus to shame.
Incredible things are happening.
I briefly ascended reading this part of the article, haha. I can't tell if I'm more obsessed with the 'give the paps my pussycat' or the Birth of Venus comparison!
