another iPad cover
After creating the red iPad cover with really thick yarn, I decided to see what using thinner yarn would look like. This cover was made out of a wool mix, and I decided that the chunky wool was way faster.

new additions
I’ve just been going through photos of things I’ve crocheted and knitted. So the items after the red iPad cover are new additions to procrastanita’s site. They were also made a few years ago. I have a lot of wool and when I have time to procrastinate, I will take up creating some new ones.
Enjoy the new items!
orange mobile phone cover
Nokia E70 cover with window
The Nokia e70 phone was super cool. I don’t have a pic of how it opens up, but the keyboard ends up being on either side of the screen. This was before smart phones, but it definitely had a lot of smart features. The design was truly something you imagined in a sci-fi movie or TV.

recycling plastic bags
I have a studio to do my creative projects in Hobart Tasmania. So I started to continue my crocheting with tearing up and stripping all the plastic bags that came with me when I moved back to Tasmania after living in Europe for 5 years.
I will add the completed plastic bag object soon...

the iPad is here
I have created my first iPad cover using a combination yarn – velour plus wool plus acrylic. The yarn is quite thick and a dream to work with. It has thick stitches and as a result has a sense of fun about it. I love touching it! It’s so soft…

fishy plastic bags
I was getting bored with wool. I needed a challenge and began to think: What else can I crochet with?
Plastic bags!
Yes, it’s true, that’s what I concluded.
With plastic bags being prolific worldwide I can crochet anywhere without the need to buy wool – bonus!
So, how to begin, I think as I scratch my head: I cut strips out of the plastic bags to make a type of ‘yarn’ [I guess that’s what I should call it] and crochet as I go. This is my first attempt, so there are holes, rips, and weird shapes protruding out from where perhaps there shouldn’t be. And the different types of plastic made things thinner, thicker and more textured. But this, I think, has given this experimental object some personality and is looking somewhat, ah, fishy. See for yourself…
Another idea behind crocheting with plastic bags is that everywhere I go I am offered plastic bags. I decided that when I visit Istanbul next – am here now – I will try not to object to the shopkeeper’s enthusiasm for bags here – and hope to accumulate a lot of them. Then the end result will be another plastic, ah, uhm, thingy…

not so small cover
So after making things for my small handy things, I thought the next test would be for my laptop. Yes it is mobile, but not as small as the others below. I used a wool mixed with acrylic and it is quite thick so it works well for protective purposes.

more mobile clothes
Here I have made a cover for my portable hard-drive. Once again I have used silk, it is a dream to use and have as a final piece. Also because the crochet cover is flexible, it can also store the usb cord easily inside.

another phone…
Made this out of cotton as a pressie for a friend. It’s made out of a bamboo and cotton blend. This yarn gave it a nice firmness.

…more stuff
A few other things that I have created are covers for mobile phones. Here is one I made for my then new mobile phone the Z1010 Sony-Ericsson. This was a cool clam-shell design. I created an opening so that you can see who calls or smss you, so then you can decide whether to open it up or not. This was made of a wool acrylic blend. I’ve made one with an opening for a Nokia E70, see post above.

silk and an iPod
So after the small itty bitty things, I decided to go a little bigger with the With this one I used silk – which is a dream! The red contrast is a wool mix, so once again, it’s not as stiff and curls a little. I like using cute contrasting buttons too. I found this one at a flea market – I love it!

iPod – another cover
So after the small itty bitty things, I decided to go a little bigger with the general sized iPod. This was my first larger sized cover. It is made of cotton and wool – the pale blue is cotton and the darker colour is wool [the same wool used in the iPod nano cover below].
Sorry about the images, they were taken by Z1010 Sony-Ericsson a few years ago – before quality cameras became the norm in mobiles.

getting into “i” gadget covers
Here is my first iPod cover and the beginning of my electronic cover making. The cover is for an iPod nano. It’s about 4/5 years old, one of the first that came out. I crocheted a button and loop here. It’s made out of wool so it’s quite hardy.

toy take two
So another take on playing with sculptural ball shapes [Circles and Toys]. This one has a pronounced snout and funny protruding green eyes. Each paw [has four] has a different colour combination. This was made for Luca Milena and I am told she is intrigued by the snout. I do not fill these to be solid and tight, but make them full enough to have a bouncy affect when one pokes them. They really are soft to touch not only from the fluffy yarn, but also the filling.

circles and toys
Another thing that I started to think about was circles – I love circles!
The starting point for crocheting the tiny bottles that I had already done was the circular casting-on pattern. I thought what can I make by extending this? So I continued on from there until I started to make simple furry balls. I liked them so much as sculptural shapes that I didn’t want to join the pieces. Eventually I succumbed and sewed the pieces together to make furry toys. Some are based on animals, some are not so obvious and some are still being appreciated as shapes.
Thank you Alex Miles for these great shots above of June’s bear.
