She gave him a rather smug smile and shrugged without concern. “Might’ve. Like I said, I like champagne.” She considered him over the rim of her glass, then looked at the room around them. Crowded, everyone looking pretty. Hundreds of people so there had to be plenty more booze. Somewhere. “How exactly can you be bad at parties?” she wondered. “All you have to do is walk around and… I don’t know… be drunk.”

“I’m more of a guy who likes video games, reading—and the occasional horror movie when I feel like crying into my pillow. You know—normal stuff.” But half that was sarcasm. Steven was—on average—socially awkward. His ex-wife was much more the person to do this. “I’m guessing you’re an expert at it, then?”

Rose hummed in agreement, gave the glass in her hand a little jiggle – a few drops spilled over the rim before she remembered herself – before narrowing her eyes at him. “Love champagne. I have met you. I think. Right? Uh, yes. I love parties. How ‘bout you?”

Steve snickered, but he didn't laugh outright—it wasn't like he wanted to leave the impression he was laughing at her. Instead, he grinned, small smile appearing. Hands pocketed, and he shrugged his shoulders. “I'm not particularly good at parties, but I do try—it's good for the most part—but it sucks a little when a waiter passes and—“ He turned to look—another empty tray. “And they never have anything to drink. I'm starting to think you drank them dry.”

“Either your mask if really effective or… I just don’t know you.” Rose lifted her champagne in a kind of mocking toast and tossed it back. “Probably the latter.”

Steven tilted his mask—the brunette from the first crimes was clear—and much happier than the last time he'd seen her. “I don't want to be too forward, but I have a feeling you've found the champagne.” Pushing it up to sit on his forehead, he grinned. “Enjoying yourself?”

“THE BEST WAY TO SPREAD CHRISTMAS CHEER IS SINGING LOUD FOR ALL TO HEAR–” Olivia took a dramatically large inhale of breath before bursting out into laughter. “I wasn’t actually going to. Fooled you didn’t I? …I may have had one too many Irish Coffee’s. Or Hot Toddie’s.”

Cracking a grin as he approached, hands pocketed in his winter jacket, snow gently falling around them—he was sure that was a bit of magic. “And you didn't save any for the rest of the town? That's almost cruel.”

With the Christmas Parade ended, Grace was eager to ice skate, especially with all the Christmas decorations and the snow falling. It was picture perfect, her favorite time of year. She was in serene bliss until she got pelted with a snowball by a couple kids that often came by the bakery. “Hey! This is the thanks I get for giving you free treats!” They cackled with laughter, tossing another one at her. “I need reinforcements! I’m by myself!”

Steven was happy to help, a jump over the bench as he shot through, ran in front and blocked the on-coming snowballs being tossed in her direction. “Do you even know these kids?” He waved his hand over the ground, the snow clumping and forming balls, perfect and round, as he lifted them in a row—and another second flew forward onto the attackers. “I hope that's considered playing fair.” He gave her a hopeless shrug.

“…For sledding? I would make one but I don’t have the things to make it and I didn’t think I would need them because it’s a sled, yeah? We’re in the mountains and there’s hills so, like, how are there not sleds everywhere?”

“Well sure—but you can't use those plastic mats they always sell everywhere?” Maybe he was suggesting the wrong thing, or another solution to the problem the brunette had. “I mean, if you found pliable wood—I could bend it with magic, but it wouldn't last forever.” A small smile, and the only thing he could think of was a poor man's excuse. “Maybe it's just me, but I think Snapchat has gotten in the way of sledding, or anything else that can't be straight-forwardly documented.”

Steven had his hands in his pockets, admiring the Christmas festivities when he looked over, catching the woman’s tone. “Any particular reason why? I mean—I’d try a camping store or—make one—but where have you looked so far?”

“Here’s a purely philosophical question,” Elissa offered to the nearest person. “Exactly how immoral would it be to hoard Christmas cookies and, in a follow up, how edible do you think gingerbread houses actually are?”

“It’s only immoral if you’re not offering to share. But Get Baked has about five gingerbread houses on display, and I’m tempted to see if I can sneak a taste—you in?”

Steven was used to his morning run. There was Mrs. Brown who always waved to him twenty-minutes in, her husband who seemed to glare at him through the window, though he never really understood why. He flashed a grin in the elderly woman's direction as he'd done. A quick turn—side step the woman with her stroller, and the familiar bakery in site. Of course he made it a habit now—well not entirely. It was the beginning of a habit. Jogging up to the door, he opened it and held his step for a moment while someone exited, entering behind them and standing at the end of the line. He could see her—but he didn't know if she could see him. Waiting—step-step-step—he reached the counter and grinned down at her. “Hi, Grace.”

Steven skidded out of the theater, having just seen Thor: Ragnarok, and was in complete awe. The graphics, the comedy—Tessa Thompson—it was a win from the comic-book fan, and he was thoroughly impressed. Popcorn bag tossed into the garbage, popping the last few kernels into his mouth, he strode down the street towards the town’s square when he spotted a stray dog nearly dashing in the middle of traffic. Sure, it broke a lot of boundaries—possibly a lot of rules—but it was a reflex he had, and one he couldn’t stop. Hands raised, almost summoning the animal to his outstretched arms, catching it and setting it down in front of his rushing owner. Turning around he almost collided with the being behind him, catching him off guard. “Jesus!”
