                she had forgotten her text book. of all the things--- it wasn’t like                 many classes here required books and the one class she was                 in that did--- she forgot it. she was irritated at herself for screwing up.                 (even after getting away--- failure still made her panic.) but, at                 least someone had offered to lend her their book during class.                 the crock glowered a little before forcing a smile towards the                 younger girl, moving to scoot closer. “thanks. again. i’ll have it next time.”

besides faline there were a small handful of people sam was actively looking forward to seeing at the ball. she was friendly enough with most people--- but there were a select few that had really wormed their way into her heart and that she went out of her way to look for at events. (excluding her family, who she always was on edge about and looked for.) one xander santana was included on this list--- her best friend for as long--- well, as long as she had been free. she had been looking for the boy since parting with faline for a little bit and was growing dejected, (maybe he didn’t come), before finally spotting the dark haired sharp shooter. there he was. “xander,” strolling up beside him the tall girl flashed a smile, eyeing him and the area. “well, never thought i’d see you in a tux--- and without mateo on your arm.”

a good few hours into the gala and sam was starting to believe someone had spiked her drink. she stayed away from alcohol generally, (she felt out of control with her life as it was--- didn’t need even more reason) but, she was sure that was the only explanation now for what she was seeing. or imagining what she was seeing. every now and then she’d see a blur of blonde hair, familiar in ways that caused her stomach to drop. it had happened enough now that, the next time sam had seen the figure walk by, she had taken to follow her, leaving her glass behind. blonde hair. same height. the apprehension in sam’s stomach grew. either she was seeing things or--- “serena?” honestly, if it was her--- of all the places to find her sister again--- she wished she wasn’t in a gown. wasn’t dolled up. it felt embarrassing. they were always suppose to be put together--- not little princesses at dances.

                 finding her date had turned out certainly easier than expected. thank goodness they were both tall. it made looking across crowds easy. sam had laughed gently at the blonde’s statement, corners of her eyes crinkling in a soft smile. “you look like you were born for this, honestly.” faline was always graceful. pretty and gentle--- she looked at ease in the party atmosphere. sam, meanwhile, was on edge. all rough sides. but being around her friend made it easier.  “so i can see why you’d like them.” she paused a moment--- as if remembering something. “---you look wonderful, by the way.”

                  roxanne’s total nonchalance makes sam all the more angry,                   wanting to shout back, get a reaction, something--- but her words                   are sharp and cut her down quickly. she knows her temper is inherited.                   hates it. the metahuman grits her teeth instead of shouting, angry fire in                   her chest suffocating her air slowly, curls her hands into fists. “certain,”                   she grits out, breathes in for a moment. “none of us---” clarification.                    “me or my sisters are, either.”

“I know.” Her voice was light as ever, but her features were hard now, lips pressed into a tight smile. “But to me you seem quite normal. We should be a lot more strange than we really are.” She suggested gently.

               there’s a light chuckle from sam, bitter in a sense. “you seem normal                to me too,” she echoes, and the laugh is back again. “it’s everyone else                who seems odd.” shaking her head she offers faline a smile, ache starting                 to leave. “thanks.”
