Alex lived below me, and next door to this really weird, quite square girl who was obviously in love with him. Alex's door didn't close properly. You'd walk past and he'd be just there asleep, completely naked, spread-eagled with all his bits hanging out, next door to this really square odd girl who was infatuated with him and who must have been very freaked out by it. I'd go down in the mornings to drag him up to go to college or whatever or to finish the tequila from the previous night and his door was always ajar. So immodest.

I look up and Graham's arriving at the same time taking his guitar out of the boot. We stood there and totally clocked each other. I was a bit sickened, really. I thought he was cooler than me and better looking. And up till then I'd be feeling pretty cool - baggy trousers, paisley shirt, floppy fringe - and then I see Graham who looked like and only cooler and I thought, You bastard. I knew instantly that he'd be a big part of my life.

Elastica and Justine had got into a weird, bad place. There were bad things happening. Not healthy. There seemed to be darkness around all the time. I had a period there myself. If the truth be known, a lot of 13 stems from that period. I'd rented this flat for a year and I wrote a lot of lyrics there. 'Tender' dates from then. Very painful. Agonizingly slow. Getting caught up in your own misery. Misery is something you mustn't just wallow in. Great if you're running from it as fast as you can and not wallowing. I did a bit of that. But then I knew we'd reached the end. It was sad... and finished. I had to get away.
- Damon Albarn (Blur 3862 Days)
He didn't really have any friends. He had it hard because of his name, too, which people would make jokes about. 'All Bran' and stupid kids' stuff. And stuff about Damien in The Omen. The skins would kick him about in the toilets and hold him down and write '666' on his forehead. That's probably why he's so scarred and such an emotional wreck. I thought he was a really great bloke. I'd never known anyone like him.
