The Craig: ‘I Must Be Mad’ (1966) The Craig was from Birmingham, England, starting out as The Castaways and then The King Bees but changing their name after they had been signed up by the producer Larry Page (who had already worked with The Kinks), since there were other bands bearing the same name. The line-up consisted of Geoff Brown (vocals), Richard Pannell (guitar), Len Cox (bass) and Carl Palmer (drums — later becoming world-famous with Emerson, Lake & Palmer). The Craig’s first release was ‘A Little Bit of Soap’, a cover version by The Exciters, but it was only the second single of the band’s own material, penned by Geoff Brown, which gained The Craig their place in the Freakbeat Pantheon: ‘I Must Be Mad’ (b/w ‘Suspense’, Fontana TF 715, 1966) was all recorded in one take, inspired by The Who’s most frenzied moments and now considered one of the earliest British psychedelic tracks (some even compare it to The Who’s ‘I Can See For Miles’, which came out only a year later). Now the track can be found on endless compilation albums of UK mod, freakbeat and psychedelia, but the single was not a hit when it was released and the band grew increasingly disillusioned by Larry Page’s attempts to steer them to the musical direction that the members were uncomfortable with, disbanding by mid-1967 and individually continuing with other bands and projects. http://www.brumbeat.net/craig.htm http://dereksdaily45.blogspot.fi/2012/04/craig-i-must-be-mad.html
