another year older, a little bit stronger, a little bit wiser.

Puck just watched Kurt and tried not to laugh as he explained why he made him the scarf and all of the reasons why he should wear it. Normally Puck would give him crap for that, but honestly, it was really nice and the fact that Kurt took the time to make it was even better. Besides, it really did match his jacket, so how could he not wear it all the time? “Hey, you don’t have to convince me. I love it, I’m gonna wear it everyday,” he told his friend with a grin. “I don’t think my vocal folds really need protected. We both know I’m just another body in the glee club. But I promise I’m gonna wear this a lot.” Puck knew realistically that he wasn’t that great of a singer at all, at least not for the whole vibe that glee club was going for, but he knew that Kurt liked him being there and it actually wasn’t so bad, even if he didn’t want to admit it sometimes.
After readjusting the scarf and wrapping it around his neck again, Puck moved to start helping clean things up, only to have both Kurt and Sarah telling him that he wasn’t allowed to help. He just sighed dramatically but agreed, grabbing the rest of his stuff and heading into the living room. He put the cards that Sarah made on the mantle and then plopped down on the couch, turning on the TV. They didn’t have a whole lot of movies to choose from, but he dug into a box that was on the lower shelf of the coffee table, pulling out a few DVDs he had managed to copy from friends or download illegally from the internet. When he finally found the one he wanted, he got up and put it in the DVD player, picking up the remote and getting comfortable again as the other two joined him.
“Nah, no superheroes tonight. I know it’s my birthday, but you two have to put up with that enough,” he said with a laugh. Kurt had no problem giving him shit for his superhero movie obsession, and Sarah definitely didn’t either, even though Puck could argue that he had to watch enough of her boring movies too. “I figured I’d try to go for something we’d all like.” He gestured to the TV as the menu for the movie Finding Nemo came up. “Can’t really go wrong here, huh?”
Puck started the movie and got comfortable on the couch, grabbing a blanket off of the side and covering himself with it. He smiled as he watched Sarah sitting down next to Kurt with her legs crossed, holding her small hands out to Kurt who was giving her so much special attention. It was actually really sweet to see. Puck tried to do his best as a big brother, but there were some things he just didn’t get despite how much he tried.
“Maybe I should be paying attention to how you do this,” he said, leaning forward to get a better look. “I seriously try all the time but I just make a huge mess. She still asks me to do it though.”
‘Not like I can ask ma. She’s always busy,’ Sarah stated incredulously. ‘Your hands just shake too much!’
Puck frowned dramatically. “Not my fault you have tiny little baby fingernails. I’ll paint your fingernails all the time when we’re adults to make up for it.” He laughed, but it was weird to think of them as being adults one day, especially Sarah. It was hard to even believe that she was as old as she was now.
‘It’s okay. Kurt can just do it from now on,’ she said simply.
“I think Kurt has better stuff to do than come over any time you want your nails painted,” he told his sister, who was just looking at Kurt expectantly like he would agree to be her nail slave.
Kurt rolled his eyes at Noah’s teasing. “Sorry that I use the correct term,” Kurt said with a smirk; Noah had teased him about that before. “And, come on, you’re a great singer. Don’t act like you’re not. We need you there.” Kurt lightly touched his arm for a moment before quickly pulling it away. As much as Noah had proven to be accepting, Kurt sometimes got afraid of touching him too much, like maybe Noah would think he was into him or something. Which he totally wasn’t. Obviously. And, yeah, they had just hugged, but like…something about him initiating it still made him worry. Whatever. He knew he thought too much about it sometimes.
When Noah said they weren’t going to watch some superhero movie, Kurt raised his eyebrows. Really? Kurt had just been joking; he didn’t, like, hate superhero movies or anything. In fact, now he was starting to at least enjoy some of the eye candy. But he didn’t want to insist that Noah watch something just to please him or something. And when Finding Nemo came up on the screen, Kurt couldn’t help but smile, all want of resisting fading. Kurt had a soft spot for that movie. “Disney and Pixar are always good choices,” Kurt said. Sarah beamed and nodded in agreement; she seemed to be glad to have someone agree with her on that.
Despite wanting to watch the movie, Kurt turned himself towards Sarah and did his best to angle her so she could see the screen well. It didn’t seem to matter, though, because she kept looking at her nails as Kurt kept painting them. Truth be told, he didn’t have much experience with hands these small, but he had enough experience on his own hands - which were the hardest to do - and a few others’ that it wasn’t too difficult.
“You just have to be careful and patient,” Kurt said simply. Kurt just smiled as the two siblings talked back and forth so easily. He really wished he had a sister to talk to so easily, or even a brother, but, then again, he liked having his own, big room and getting to control more things in the house.
Then Sarah was looking up at him for an answer over whether he’d do her nails all the time or not. “Well, I’d love to help when I can, it just may not be all the time,” Kurt said carefully. “But I wouldn’t mind helping you at all. I’m pretty good, but practice makes perfect.” Kurt capped off the nail polish and looked over her nails to make sure they were evenly coated. They’d do a second coat once they dried.
‘Woah. No never does this good,’ Sarah said, looking them over as well. Kurt gently moved her hands back to the paper towel since they were still drying. ‘How did you get so good?’
Kurt took one of his own nails and carefully wiped off some nail polish that had landed on one of her nail beds. “Practice. It’s not too hard on other people.” He shrugged a little and said, “My mom taught me how when I was a kid. She said I could do her nails whenever I wanted.”
Sensing that Sarah would possibly ask about his mom and not wanting to bring down the mood with that, Kurt looked over at Noah. “Shouldn’t the birthday boy get a manicure, too?” He looked back at Sarah, “What do you think?”
Sarah giggled and nodded. ‘He should! Do it No!!’
Kurt looked back at Noah and raised up the sparkly nail polish. “Don’t you want a birthday treat?” He was sure Noah wouldn’t do it, but the thought was cute. “Maybe Sarah could even practice on you.”
Puck sighed as Kurt said he had to be careful and patient. “Yeah I know, and I’m neither of those things if you haven’t noticed that yet,” he said with a chuckle. “I can do the first couple okay but then that’s pretty much it.” Puck had never been great at anything that requires careful or delicate care, like painting nails or arts and crafts or even the more precise parts of yard work. He didn’t mind mowing the lawn at all, but weeding and mulching for his mom drove him absolutely crazy.
He was getting more comfortable on the couch when Sarah, yet again, pointed out how Kurt’s paint job was much better than anything he’d ever done, and he just rolled his eyes and tried not to laugh. He pulled the blanket up over himself, watching the movie and not really listening to their conversation until he realized they were both staring at him. He tuned back in, processing what they said, and just shook his head and grinned. “No way. Birthday boy doesn’t need anything else today,” he insisted, trying to get them to drop it. But they just looked so excited and Sarah was giving him these puppy dog eyes as she asked again, plus Kurt was hard to say no to. Puck just sighed loudly and sat up.
“Fine. But I don’t want sparkles. Can you get one that isn’t sparkly?” he asked Sarah as he pulled the blanket off of himself. “And I want it to look good, which means Kurt needs to do it, not you. Or he at least needs to fix it after.” Sarah gave him a dramatic pout but got up and disappeared down the hall to her room to get her other nail polishes, and Puck got up and sat down on the floor next to Kurt, crossing his legs. “You’re lucky I like you,” he joked, nudging Kurt’s knee, then turned to take the small container of nail polish from Sarah. He looked through them and picked out a darker blue color which seemed pretty neutral.
