For the past four years, journalist Victoria Lautman has been photographing an overlooked feature of Indian architectural history: the stepwell. From between the 2nd and 4th centuries CE until the time of the British Raj rule in the 19th century, stepwells functioned as year-round water repositories in a climate marked by episodic drought and heavy rain.

Amid bullets, Arab women reclaim identity
In her project “Bullets Revisited,” Lalla Essaydi uses bullet casings to decorate her sets as well as the clothes worn by the models. On the models, Essaydi uses Arabic calligraphy written with henna, a sacred element in the life of a woman from Arab countries. Essaydi has projected violence on her work as violence escalates in the Middle East. “These bullets…maybe they were used to harm somebody,” she said.
