REEL REVIEW: Ten Things I Hate About You

Based on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, this amazeballs nineties movie is a much more feminist friendly take on the classic play. I especially enjoy Allison Janney’s take on a public high school principal! The colorful cast includes Larisa Oleynik, a doe-eyed Joseph Gordon-Levitte, an angsty Julia Styles as the shrew, and (I saved the best for last) a young Heath Ledger playing the rebel with a cause.  

The music alone is reason enough to watch this movie! If you need more motivation, here are a five reasons:

You will understand the references all of your cool friends have been laughing over.

I don’t believe it is on Netflix instant, but this one is a classic, so it is probably five bucks at Target. If that fails, check your local library. (You’d be surprised how many awesome movies libraries have!!!)

                So, this morning I watched this TED Talk by Tracy McMillan, a really very interesting woman. I just fell in love with her bold and unapologetic presence. This is exactly what I needed to see right now. The speech is called “The Person You Really Need to Marry,” which implies it is a speech about marriage, but it is SO not!! It is really a speech about being faithful to yourself first and really, truly unashamedly loving yourself no matter what you look like today, if you’ve just made a huge mistake, or whatever it is. The point she makes, as a thrice married and divorced woman, is that you can’t begin to love another person like that until you love yourself that way. I know it seems cliché : “love yourself,” but I mean there MUST be a reason that it’s said so much! I mean, to quote Perks of Being a Wallflower, “We accept the love we think we deserve.”

                I just needed to share this because I needed the inspiration today and I’ll hang on to it tomorrow and maybe it will inspire someone else.

Joss Whedon’s newest success is … What!? A romance?!  And here we thought he was stuck in space-cowboys and superheroes! No, Sir Joss pulls this one off magnificently acting as both writer and producer.

The concept of the movie surrounds two lovely people who share a telepathic bond. Although they live across the country from one another, and have never met before, they have the ability to see, hear, and feel, the other’s experiences.  The young heroine, Rebecca Porter, is played by Indie favorite Zoe Kazan who authentically plays someone whose mental stability is a little shaky. The main fella, Dylan Kershaw, is played by a relatively new face, Michael Stahl-David.

The overall tone of the movie is clean and earnest, but the humor it holds is golden. While this concept had the potential to be ruined, our Joss would never do that to us. He pulls out another genuinely tremendous film that will definitely find a place on my list of favorites.

You can find the movie on Vimeo for $5 rental. It is not yet on Netflix instant. (Sorry College kids.) I have to say that the $5 rental was the best five bucks I’ve ever spent!
