Sitting on the uncomfortable chair next to the hospital bed I drifted in and out of a light sleep. The beep of a machine restarting, the flash of a light, the coughs that came from the wards down the hall. It was unsettled. The cars outside beeped and squeaked as the rain washed down the window. Another wet night. Spent in the hospital room waiting. Waiting for something to happen. Resting my head on the side of the chair I closed my eyes and drifted over again, reliving the fateful night which brought me to the hospital room.
Back in the train station, walking hand in hand with him rushing to get out of the large crowd. The rain soaked us as soon as it hit us, making us giggle and sigh. Running over to a taxi with it’s light lit and a man sitting in the front with a newspaper. Hauling my bag into the back seat George got in first then gave me his hand to help me in. I flopped beside him, both laughing we relaxed in our soggy clothes and made ourselves comfortable. “Corinthia hotel please” George told the taxi driver. He nodded, folding his paper and placing his hands on the wheel he made his way out of the parking spot. Watching the street’s of London go past, rain trickling down the window, radio silently humming I smiled as I seen George smirk at me as he wrapped his arms around me. “See, told you I would see you this weekend” I laughed.
“It’s only because your paying for me. I could be at home sleeping.”
“Would you rather be asleep?”
“No. I would rather be here with you”
“Good. We both think alike”
I nodded and placed my head on his shoulder. Closing my eyes momentarily.
I was woken again by a man requesting some water. I squinted seeing a nurse handing over a small plastic cup and walking back to her post. I turned to look at the lifeless body in the bed. Wires attached to every inch of his body. I wished and prayed he would wake up. Not expecting anything, but I hoped that maybe a miracle would happen. But they don’t very often. Caught in my own thoughts I drifted again back into sleep.
The car jolted and both mine and George’s body’s shifted forward. I gripped his arm and he held me back.
“Fucking teenagers. GET OUT OF THE WAY YOU DICK” the taxi driver shouted out of the window. The boy put his hand out and gave him the finger and raced off nearly knocking over an old lady. I looked at George as he rubbed my arm.
“London’s pretty bad for traffic” he soothed.
I smiled and leant back into him, he held me tight and made me feel safe. As we came to a set of lights I stared out of the window. A restaurant was packed with people eating, laughing and enjoying themselves. This made me think about how hungry I was. George placed his hand on my waist as the taxi started moving again. I started to speak;
“George, do you have anything-”
but I was caught off as soon as George screamed
blackness overcame my thoughts as I blanked out.
Jumping out of my seat I flashed my eyes as they overcame the darkness of the hospital ward. I relaxed back into it and sighed. This dream had occurred five time in the past week. Making me relive the moment which changed everything. I turned to face him again. Placing my hand on his I rubbed my thumb on the back of his.
“Please wake up George” I whispered. I could feel my eyes watering again. I thought I had cried myself out. I slipped out of my seat and knelt beside George’s bed. I looked up through the tears and kissed the back of his hand. I rest my head on the bed, sobbing as my emotions overwhelmed me again. Still holding onto George’s hand I started praying. Not that I was overly religious, I was just hoping something would work. Repeating “please” over and over again I squeezed George’s hand tighter and tighter. This wasn’t going to do anything other than cut off the circulation from his hand. I sat back on the floor, and whispered
“All I want is for you to make me feel safe again, even if it’s only for a minute. Please George”
The faint sound of the beeps from the heart monitor started to quicken. I looked up staring at the machine, sobbing even harder as the heart machine sped up, quicker and quicker. I glanced over to where the nurse was sitting. I jumped up and squealed. She ran over and read the machine, a shocked look on her face. She glanced at me before running off. I knelt down beside George again and squeezed his hand tighter.
“George, come on you can do it. Please George please”
I was pushed aside as two doctors ran through with the nurse following after with a defibrillator. I was confused, wasn’t he waking up? He was waking up. What were they doing? They can’t, he can’t…
I lost my trail of thoughts and broke down screaming at the doctors to stop. The nurse held me back, rubbing my forehead, George’s chest jumped as they shocked him the first time. Then a second, then a third. The two doctors exchanged looks and one glanced at the clock. “Time of death, 1.34am” one of them said silently. I could feel myself falling, I rested on the floor as I sobbed into my hands while George slowly slipped away. Into a deeper sleep than he had before. Slowly my heart rate fell and the adrenaline stopped. I was left, without George. Only the sound of the rain outside to sooth me, my thoughts blanked again as I fell into my own deep sleep.
