excitement bubbled in your chest when he slammed the door open, the grip he had on your arm tightened slightly as he forced you to walk in your shared bedroom first. it wasn't tight enought to leave any bruising, though you didn't mind if it did, but enough for him to toss you around as he pleases. and he did just that, pushing you until hit the end of your shared bed and fell on to the mattress.
"the hell is your problem, jojo?!" you spat at him, your brows furrowed in frustration as he closed the bedroom door behind him. he was always tall, whenever you talked to him you always had to tilt your head up to look at him. but tonight, his figured stood menacingly taller than you remember.
"i should be asking you the same question." his baritone voice sending shivers down your spine. "i saw you flaunting your body to the neighbors outside. you don't think that embarasses me?"
"oh, so that's what this is all about." you chuckled, sitting at the edge of the bed with your legs slightly crossed. "it's so easy to get you angry, it's not like i was naked."
he didn't respond to this. he let out a frustrated sigh, joining you on the bed as he manspreads until his knees touched yours. your eyes widened slightly, you were way too familiar where this was heading and for the first time you've been with him, you felt so small and insecure.
"bend over." he slapped his left thigh down, right where he wants you to be. you bit the inside of your cheek from smiling. you loved when he was this demanding but you liked playing against the rules for a bit.
"no." you folded your arms over each other, turning to face the other way instead. and you didn't mistake the face that jotaro make from your response to him. "don't talk back to me like that." he snapped. "get over here and bend over my lap. i won't ask again."
you wondered how differently things would've ended had you not obeyed. you were tempted to taunt in his face, to push him around for speaking to you in such a way. do you have no dignity for yourself?
absolutely not you answered to yourself, bending over jotaro's lap with your ass already perked up into the air. just like he asked you to do. and you hated how overjoyed you get whenever he acts this way towards you. it was demeaning the way he can be this nasty whenever he got jealous. but in a way, you were also a fault here for doing it on purpose.
because in a twisted turn of events, you liked it all the same. and he just didnt know that.
you didn't care about your stupid neighbors, you only liked the attention it brings you. the attention that jotaro would sometimes rarely show you because of how busy he gets. you can't blame him all that much, he does work a lot and it's not like he does it on purpose either. but you just miss him so much.
but it took a lot of out you to fully admit it though.
you lifted your head up from the position you were in, over his lap to prevent the blood rushing to your head. jotaro gave a swift smack against your ass, the gesture alone made you yelp.
"count." jotaro gave yet another slap, this time a lot more harsher than the previous. you bit the bottom of your lip, your arms keeping balance on his thighs.
"make me."
he forcefully pulled whatever pants you were wearing down, along with your underwear to reveal your bare bottoms at him. you let out a quiet sound, his action catching you completely off guard. without warning, he gave you yet another harsh slap and your eyes widened.
"fuck!" you hissed. it definitely hurt more now that he was in contact with your skin. he could see everything and you could feel everything. there was no denying that he was gonna leave marks on your body by the time he was done with you. "how much?" he asked you once again, his hand dangerously close to your neck. "...three." you answered weakly.
he pushed you off of his lap, your body nearly falling to the floor. but with another harsh tug to your arm, he made you land on your back on the bed. you watched as he started to take his clothes off; slipping his jacket first, then fumbling with the front of his belt. but you sat at the edge of the bed with a pouted look on your face. you ignored the stinging pain on your ass, the lingering feeling eventually being something you've grown accustomed to no matter how often he does it.
"you should be nicer to me, by the way." you mumbled to him, gripping the sheets more. "maybe i'd start actually listening to you."
"shut up." his voice snapped. "turn around." his words were always blunt. he didn't need to beat around the bush or to sugarcoat anything that he says. you can appreciate the honesty from him, but sometimes it leaves you feeling like you did something wrong.
perhaps this moment wasn't the best example of your innocence, but you liked being cherished once in a while.
this definitely wasn't the moment for it.
"oh my god!" you groaned as your head rolled forward on to the pillow, his thick size sliding inside of you in an agonizing pace. "can't you go any faster..?"
"don't tell me what to do, you're gonna take what i give you." another slap to your ass as a warning emitted another yelp from you.
"you're such an asshole-.. oh..!" your body jerked forward as he pulled out and slammed his hips back against yours. you nearly bit your own tongue from cursing him out so much. he had to remind you where your place was and he didn't even need to say anything.
his hips moved in a rhythmic motion. one that would leave you hypnotized if you paid attention for far too long. you dared yourself to not look over your shoulder, the sight of his toned muscles flexing and the curled strand of his hair bouncing with every thrust would leave you dazed. you didnt want to give in to him just yet. the thrill of what he would do to you, what he would say leaves you completely meek.
yet your mouth went against your own wishes.
"you're too easy-..ha..! all i have to do is flirt with the neighbors and-and," you bit your lip when he fucked you faster. you felt like your brain had melted, you were only saying whatever at this point. you couldn't care anymore. "that all you got?"
"dumb whore." jotaro grunted quietly. he was always quiet, even when he was seething.
"im not a fucking-... whore." you shot back, using whatever strength to fuck yourself back into him. "fuck.. you..!"
"shut your fucking mouth." he panted, you could tell he was close with how quickly he was losing his cool. but he wouldn't dare to cum before you. no he had a plan.
you weren't that far behind either, it's been a while since the two of you had gotten intimate. the gap between now and from a few days ago must've felt like forever to jotaro. each thrust drawn out longer than the other and you were reaching your limit.
"so close.. 'm so close.." you whined. another smack to your ass, whatever fat you had on their recoiled from the impact and you hugged the pillow underneath you even tighter.
he slowed down, each thrust was deliberate and deep. the high you felt nearing your release had faded out of your body. you felt your face grow hot, you looked over your shoulder to see him smirking down at you without saying another word.
"no-no.. you asshole.." your body shook, wanting to buck your hips again to chase after that high. but jotaro's hands flew at your hips to keep you still.
"are you gonna keep being a brat?" he didn't stop his pace, he kept going. the feeling as as mutually dreadful, he wanted nothing more than to fill you up. to make you sing like a bird and remind the whole neighborhood who you belong to.
you didn't back down without a fight. you spat insults at him, resulting his thrusts to remain slow. you tried turning back to give him a slap, but he caught your wrist so early. you even called him the biggest scum and he snarled, ramming himself back into the same pace he did earlier. did he like being degraded like this?
eventually the pressure was too much to keep you mentally sane. whatever ego you had crumbled and you had fully submitted yourself to him. you would've came three times had he been at your mercy. but jotaro likes to play it hard. he wasn't the type to do that so willingly at least.
"no.." you moaned. "im sorry..!"
"louder."
"im sorry, jo-..taro!" you cried, the grip he had on your body tightened and you arched your back, biting down at the cotton to muffle your screams. it felt warm. you were completely stuffed of him, like a roasted turkey. your skin was hot to touch, the stinging sensation of his palms lingered throughout your bottom half. your thighs were on fire and your stomach dropped when he pulled away and you heard the squelching 'pop' of your body hugging his length. coaxing for him to return.
he plopped down right beside you, the top drawer opening and you presumed he was about to light a cigarette. you hated the smell but you've grown familiar to it. because it reminded you of him.
you hugged the covers close to your body, staying in the same position. but you felt a hand resting at the top of your head. his thumb gently running along your temples, brushing at your ears. you hummed quietly, your eyes weakly looking up at him but he didn't meet yours. the last thing you heard was him putting the lit butt of the cigarette out and you rested your head against his thigh.

The taste of mint has never been something Diavolo likes, it's a sharp artificial flavour that assaults his senses anytime it caresses his tongue. This is no different. It never has been.
Saliva drips onto the damp porcelain below when he spits out the foul flavour into the basin, toothpaste clinging to the gentle white before being washed away. Sure, it's manageable, but it doesn't mean he has to enjoy it either.
Hardened green stares back at him when he takes a quick glance back up, eyes he's never seen before. It's strange, they're no different than before the endless agony of Requiem, but there's nothing the same about them either. He barely even recognizes the man looking back at him anymore… Whether that's a good thing or not, he isn't sure himself. He supposes it's up to whoever believes him to be worthy of the life he's been given.
Warmth caresses his face when he runs his hand slowly across his jaw, sharp hair prickling against his palm near instantly while he takes in the light pink stubble that adorns his skin that he knows you'll find annoying cute. Cute… Diavolo is not cute.
He is a wrathful subjugator; he hurts, tortures, kills… Anything that needs to be done to get the power he so desperately craves. Craved… Despite the cruelty that still coats every rhythmic beat of his heart, there is very little left of the man he used to see in the mirror.
Whoever stares back now, they're not his eyes that he is looking into, they're yours. Every kindness you entwine into his fetid soul makes that vicious nature uncoil just a touch further, for you.
Weakness has never looked good upon his bloodstained flesh, it does not now. And yet the touch of your fingers entwining with his when you taught him how to knead that damn dough… Why can't he shift it from his mind?
It's been days and he still feels your warmth against him, still remembers the kindness of your smile when he took over from you with rough inexperience… The softness of the sunlight caressing your skin when you leaned against him faintly with a whispered, "You did good." that made his heart flutter.
He can't get it out of his mind… he can't get you out of his mind, and he isn't sure he entirely wants to anymore.
A small squeak snaps him from his reminiscing when his fingers curl around the faucet and turn off the water, steam still clinging to the mirror before he reaches out with a lazy brush of his hand to wipe the condensation away. Surely you have a razor he can use, one he doesn't need to ask you for…
Nothing, great… The shelves are near empty bar the few products you left neatly by the sink for him to use, they're not nearly as extravagant as he's accustomed to but at the very least it isn't squalor.
Goosebumps raise on his skin when he steps into the hallway and the sunlight that streams comfortably across the dark oak, the heat barely counteracting the cool draft that licks at his exposed chest and makes him shiver slightly.
The towel hugs his waist securely as he pads back to his room, an annoying click of wood under his feet pulling him minutely into irritation. He should ask you about how your domain works, and more importantly how the water pressure is so damn divine… And still somehow the wood creaks with every step he takes; it's not loud, just incredibly persistent for a house that looks so… Eerily perfect.
It would be jarring if he didn't know it was the work of a stand, no dust, no cobwebs littering the walls like a repulsive lace. It's too pristine for a cottage in the middle of a woodland, it's creepy. Curiosity is a feeling for lesser men, and yet his questions mount up higher than the bodies he leaves rotting below his feet, so many why's and how's that have never mattered to him before… He's never cared to learn about someone else in any capacity, what use is there to do so?
So why is it different because it's you?
The light dims when he steps into his room, the door swinging closed behind him with a soft click that he's prepared for this time, the sound not as jarring as it usually is though the calmness coiling in his body. His muscles relax instantly when he sits down onto the gentle lilac sheets adorning the covers, the fabric dipping below his weight when he shifts to wring his long hair into the towel draped across his hands. Cold droplets of water slip down his chest while he dries the deep pink strands, liquid soaking into the bed sheets before he can care to stop it when he sits back up with a sigh. At least it's clean… The sun will dry it through the day...
He hopes.
His skin glistens slightly under the morning sunlight when he stands to step towards the dresser by the window, his eyes drawn out into the grass before he can curl his fingers into the clothes he left on top of the wood before his shower. A tightness curls around his chest when he leans onto the cabinet to watch you, a warmth pulsing through his veins as a smile mindlessly settles on his face at the sight of you.
Damn it, why is it always this infernal feeling? Why does his heart speed up so pathetically the second his eyes flicker back onto you?… It's pitiful.
You look completely at peace while you lay in the dew misted grass, arms outstretched as that damn chicken rests comfortably on your abdomen; every rhythmic rise and fall of your body making the fluffed up little monster move with you, it's head drooping into the fabric of your shirt.
Clucky, that's the chicken you warned him of…
But no, there was no malice swarming through that gentle bird, she even seemed kind to him, always dropping onto her keel and letting him approach her slowly with little clucks. Sweet. Not like her mate, that vile creature that lays on top of you… If he didn't know better he'd think it was made just to spite him, perhaps it is.
Every single time you show up alongside him suddenly it turns into a textbook sweetheart, kind beady eyes and gentle pecks that fail to rival the ones scarring his body. He cannot complain to you about a bird, he can't give you the satisfaction of being right about warning him. Pride?
No, it's principle.
Light breathable fabric rests between his fingers as he scoffs out a laugh in pure disbelief when he inspects it, glancing up towards his empty drawers before choosing to shrug on the only damn shirt that he owns that isn't outside drying in the sun. Why would fish fear him? Fish cannot feel fear the way a man does, they would not flee out of the dread that he brings… Where did you even find this strange thing?
The white discolours too quickly when his damp hair falls across his shoulders and drips water down into the shirt, leaving it soaked and clinging to his muscles the longer he keeps his hair down. Not that he cares much when he's going into the warm glow outside anyway, it'll dry without him needing to bother with it.
He simply does not want to burn again in the sunlight if he takes it off, it is not because he wishes to fluster you. What a childish notion.
The old wood clicks behind him when the door swings shut and breaks him out of his mild amusement towards the design, making his way down the creakiest stairs known to man before awkwardly stepping over the resting dog laying at the bottom.
It's almost like Risotto wants to trip him every morning with how frequently he finds himself nearly standing on him... Dark fur moves with the breeze when his head raises with a huff, his dark eyes watching lazily before stretching with a loud yawn and padding after him, his surprisingly dry nose being thrust into Diavolo's palm when he pauses for a brief second.
"You're going to torment me today, Risotto? I suppose it's deserved."
The dogs tail wags excitedly back and forth at the sound of his voice, a hand raising dismissively to pat him on the head before moving into the kitchen and leaving him to plop back onto the cool floor.
Condensation drips across his fingers when he reaches out to grab a bottle of water from the fridge, his eyes flitting over to the window with an exasperated sigh before grabbing another. It's a small kindness, one that wouldn't matter if it were anyone else but the sweet smile and gentle thanks you always give makes his heart flutter with an irritatingly familiar warmth. It feels… nice, to be kind to you. It feels real. Human. He doesn't know the last time he was human. At least not until you.
Clucking fills the air when the door shuts softly behind his incredibly silent approach, your fingers brushing lazily across the feathers of the bird resting on your abdomen with a faint smile. Guilt slithers into his chest at the thought of disturbing you in such a gentle moment, your eyes shut under the warmth of the sun.
You look content… but that guilt is not strong enough to stop him from sinking to drying grass below his feet when he stops by your side.
His lips twitch upwards into a sly smirk at the thought flickering though his mind, the bottles placed near inaudibly onto the ground below him while the icy liquid still remains clinging to his cooling skin. He shouldn't… But his mind does not talk him out of it like his heart attempts to when he reaches out to your sun kissed skin and drags his cold palm against your arm.
The Bride of Clucky moves faster than he expects her to when she jumps off of your stomach, your eyes suddenly wide in shock as you jerk upwards and clutch at the liquid dripping down your once warm flesh.
Horror settles on your face while you stare at him in a tense silence, your lips parting in shaky pants as you try to calm the quick erratic thump of your heart. He didn't think you'd panic that badly...
Regret blooms under his ribs when his chest begins to ache, his rare smile faltering at how terrified you look before realizing that you thought it was Requiem. Not him. And then the tension shatters like it never happened in the first place when you laugh, breathless and ladened with panic but painful sweet nonetheless, near giddy as you grin under the caress of the sunlight.
"Nommy!? You scared the shit out of me!"
"That was the point."
Adrenaline courses through your body in waves when you hide your face into your palm, your smile widening while you try to flee from his intense gaze… terribly. His eyes soften with each second that passes under your soft fluster, his fingers curling around the bottle at his side before placing it instead in front of you with a fleeting comment.
"Your boss called again."
There's nothing that could rip his attention from you even if he wished it to, not to the beauty of the orchard, nor the sunlight catching drops of dew clinging to the grass as if it's barely sunrise once more… Not even the bees landing on flowers too fragile for their fat little bodies to rest on without dragging them down into the meadow underneath. Nothing… None of it compares to you.
"God, he's… annoying. I think he means well, but…"
The sentence breaks when you fall back into the soft grass with a sigh, your head lolling to the side to watch him listen to your mindless rambling. It looks comfortable to lay in the sun like this, he nearly follows you before snapping himself out of his desire. He would lose his control to you, all to lay by your side... No.
"I don't know, I just… I take time off and it's perfectly withing reason for me to… I tell him in advance, and still he keeps calling me."
Exasperation coats every word that falls from your lips, dramatic but not entirely irritated. You don't answer anymore, not after he guilt tripped you to come in over and over again… It's annoying to let it constantly run to voicemail, but it's that or give up the comfort you currently bask in.
Blades of grass ghost across your skin when you stretch out before slumping completely into the plush feeling with a small content moan, your eyes fluttering closed again in the unalloyed blissful calm that he almost thinks you might fall asleep in. He wouldn't wake you, but he would absolutely torment you for getting sunburn… just like you did to him last week.
"Nice shirt, by the way."
"Enough." The snap fractures when he glances down to the bewildering image glaring out into the world, a giant trout… at least he thinks it's a trout, with the sharp writing "Women want me. Fish fear me." plastered across in a dramatic font that hurts his eyes if he looks too long. He hates it, but he can't help but find it just a little amusing. "Is this the type of thing you spend your money on?"
"Actually, I made it! I have a printer in the living room…"
"You made… You chose to make this?"
Droplets of water trail down his biceps when he shakes his head in disbelief at the realization that you made it for him… and you thought he would want it? A small laugh breaks the air that makes your eyes snap open in surprise at the sweet sound, fleeting but a laugh nonetheless. You finally got him to break!? Over a fucking shirt...
Your heart jumps slightly below your ribs when your gaze rests onto him, a grin pulling at your lips that makes his own falter when he quickly looks away with a sharp clearing of his throat.
"You like it! Oh my god…" You sit up so quickly to accuse him that your head buzzes under the shift, your brows furrowing slightly in amusement when you point the bottle towards him like it could accentuate your point further… In a weird way it does. "Can I make you more!? Don't answer that… I know you're gonna say no. But will you wear them if I did?"
"No." His tongue darts out to wet his lips when he glances back over towards you, your eyes melting the ice around his heart when he backpedals slightly. Not enough to outright say yes… just enough. "If they are not infuriating."
"Define infuriating."
Cold water streams down his throat before he tilts his head back towards you with a dismissive hum, the bottle crackling slightly when he closes it and places it back onto the grass below.
His eyes trace across your face when you look over towards the orchard with a small pout, dropping to your neck where the bruises fade into almost nothingness, it makes him… strangely happy to see them gone. But you notice his gaze on you before he realizes that you're watching him, his eyes lidded and lazy with the tender inspection of the fading scars littering your skin. And he's smiling again.
Faint, but there.
"What do you do when I'm not home?"
Dew clings to your skin when you lean forward to rest your elbows on your knees, your hair falling in front of your eyes when you glance down to grab the bottle where you'd dropped it next to his. He watches, even if he trusts you more than you think, just for a split second before darting back up to your face.
"Read... I didn't get much of a chance before I came here."
"What did…" Hesitation breaks through the question that you nearly ask, fracturing into something gentler, less dread ladened. He knows that you're curious about who he is, about who he… what he used to be. He can't risk you finding you, you'd hate him. And he would too. "What are you reading right now?"
"Fight club."
You shouldn't talk about it… A soft giggle falls from your lips when your eyes drop back down to his shirt, your smile widening at how silly he looks when you push yourself up to your feet and hold your palm out to help him up; even if you know he won't take it. And he doesn't.
Curiosity pulses though his body when he moves to stand on his own without even a second glance to your hand before it falls back to your side, your voice quiet when you lean to pick up the bottles resting in the grass and handing his own back to him.
"Come with me?"
"Why?"
Suspicion cracks through the gentleness you pull him into when you step past him and pick up the chicken sleeping by his feet with a soft pathetic kissing sound down to it, only making the bird cluck in defiance at your interruption even if she doesn't move from your careful hands.
It's keel rests against your palm when you tuck her towards your chest and smile over your shoulder sweetly towards him, your pace slow when you begin walking towards the coop with him in tow even if you don't need to look back to know he's following you. Despite his complaining and how he acts like it's the worst thing in the world to spend time with you, his eyes watch you intently as if looking away meant you'd disappear and leave him alone again.
You don't bring it up, obviously… but you can see it in his disinterested stare that he's terrified that you'll eventually not come back.
A small trill pulls you gently from your daze when you lean to plop her back into the coop, her beak instantly dropping to the seed adorning the floor as she satiates her unyielding appetite with happy little clucks.
"I need to do some gardening, if you want to help."
"I don't." The gravel shifts below his feet when he matches your pace to walk by your side rather than trail behind you like a dog, his eyes flitting over to you every few seconds before continuing his indifference like you were begging him to help you. "Fine, it would give me something to do at least, rather than read the mediocre books that you keep."
"Hey… They're not that bad!" Your fingers reach up to brush through the leaves above you when you pass through the elegant archway, the sunlight flickering across your skin and pulling his attention from the path in front of you both. "You could also just ask for new ones, you know?"
A low near bored hum is all you get in response, not that you were entirely expecting that he would agree with you. He never does, but you don't mind… he isn't that good at hiding the things that he wants anyway. The softening green of his eyes flit around lazily to the plants as you pass them by, his fingers twitching slightly when you walk by the fork in the path to lead him right instead of left like the last time you took him here… God, was it really months ago? It barely feels that long.
"Hungry?"
"Do you always watch me this much?"
He doesn't need to look over at you to know your eyes are on him. He's always been painfully aware when people watch him, the familiar crawling across his skin that he wants to tear at as if he can rip it from the way it caresses him. He never has been able to make it stop, even with you it's still there albeit less intense than anyone before.
His lips curl up into a faint smile when you stutter out a small reply that makes his heart flutter, completely forgetting about the want to turn and stride over to the strawberries he seems to enjoy so deeply.
"Wh… What!? I don't…" Deep crimson burns across your cheeks under the soft sunlight when you fall into fluster, your voice breaking off as you choke lightly on your defence before continuing embarrassed. "I was just curious."
"I can always feel you staring." His eyes flit over to you when you don't try to reply to the sudden honesty, your head tilted down in a jarring horror that you try to cover up with a sharp clear of your throat when his head turns to watch you fully. "You haven't eaten either."
"I'm not…"
"Y/N."
Irritation weaves it's way into his tone when he stops your dismission with a snap of your name, your cheeks blazing brighter for a small moment before you freeze to stare down at the plants coiling into themselves. A sharp grounding exhale breaks through his annoyance when your fingers brush his unintentionally as he walks past before turning and waiting for you to speak, the warmth still ghosting across his skin even from such a tiny caress.
"Sorry…" It's a genuine apology even if it sounds intensely distracted when you drop into a crouch, your hand reaching out to ghost across the wilting bark with a deep frown and a solemn whisper that makes his chest feel tight. "I loved this one…"
"It is dying."
The lie coats your tongue before you even decide that you want to speak it, your eyes dropping low to the roots sinking deep into the soil below the near blackened base of the small dying tree. It wasn't his fault… you don't want him to know that his cruelty curled so deeply within your chest that your sadness drowned any hope of breaking away from it, you knew he wouldn't take kindly to figuring out your pain. It wasn't his fault.
His voice cuts off your own before you can open your mouth to speak, closer than you expect him to be when he crouches down by your side to inspect it with a small tilt of his head, the deep pink falling across your skin when he turns to glance at you again.
"It's rotting?"
"The weather in here is, uh…" You want to lie. A deceit that you don't know if he would even believe, but you don't. Not again. Fragile rot brushes your fingertips when they graze across the wilting tree, your mind scrambling for the best way to tell him before your tongue dips out to wet your lips. "The weather changed depending on how I feel."
"And rain is… negative?"
The realization clicks gently when you nod. A hesitant movement that makes a sharp breath caress across your jaw when he exhales, his gaze flitting from the plant to your eyes even if you don't look over to him. Broken bark rest between your fingers when you bite the inside of your lip, the faint ache in your chest blossoming over losing one of the first plants you ever grew. He doesn't need to ask his question to know the answer to it.
It died because he hurt you.
"What was it?"
Your eyes are as soft as they often are when you finally turn to look at him, like a gentle silk caressing his skin when his gaze darts across to yours.
Hard timber covers the floor against his knees when he leans forward to intensely inspect the decaying wood below you, his voice low and strangely tender when he nudges you to speak more about it. Not really caring for the answer itself, but wanting to hear it regardless… A notion that he has never felt before.
"A pomegranate tree, I planted it last year when I figured out I could do this with my stand… I could have sped up the growth but…"
Your fingers curl carefully under the base of the tree to try to work free some of the dark rotting roots before clicking your tongue when they fracture. It'll be infuriating to remove it with how deep the putrescence spreads into the soil.
"It was my first… and the only one that survived winter. I don't actually know how I managed to kill it… Trees are notoriously difficult to murder."
A gentle laugh from your lips fractures the sadness around you when the rain threatens to fall, darkening clouds rolling in like devastating waves when your head falls back to look up, your frown deepening when you realize you might lose more than this. They're just plants…
But panic coils quickly under your skin when his heart begins to ache, your mind trying desperately to pull yourself from the rising tide before the downpour hits. His hand drags over the stubble lining his jaw when he chokes back his vicious nature, hesitant fingers brushing your own to grab your attention before he silently leans closer to your warmth with a long exhale. It's a welcome reprieve from your mind when his shoulder presses firmly against yours as he speaks, low and gentle as if soothing a wounded animal. Reminiscent of how you continue to calm him.
Whether it's simply mimicking or something more, you don't know...
"You are disgusting for liking pomegranates, they are vile." The grief slips from your body when your laugh claws it from you, your smile instant over his playful disdain for the berry, your eyes fluttering shut when you rest into his touch with a light dismissive hum. "I suppose that makes us both killers."
"Shut up…"
It's a sweet snap that rests on your tongue, laced with a tease that overtakes your sadness when you shift away to stand up with a groan when your bones click. He doesn't move from his spot for a second when he regrets not keeping you pressed securely against him, the cold air brushing away the warmth that you lulled him into.
You always offer him help to stand, even if he refuses every time without fail, you still do it. Surprise rests heavily into your expression when his fingers slip into yours, barely putting any weight onto you when he rises to his feet and glares down at the dirt clinging to his pants. You can't tell if it's a kindness... or pity.
"You get used to it… The mess."
Wood falls to the floor when he pulls his hand away to brush the dirt off of the dark fabric before glancing back towards you when you move, your fingers barely caressing the flesh of the fruit that you stretch up to reach for on the other side of the path, before dropping from your tip-toes with a small huff.
"You're so…" Short… He doesn't finish it. The tease breaks when he stares up at the towering tree above you both, his question falling quicker than he means it to even if he doesn't sound that interested in the answer. Even when he is. "How did it grow so tall?"
"Oh, the fruit trees I planted just before you showed up… It was really annoying to grow them in here honestly. It burns a lot of energy to force them to grow, but winter hit harder than I thought so..."
You jump slightly when his chest brushes against your back, his hand curling around the fruit to pluck it from the branch before handing it to you without a single word, your lips parting in surprise as you mutter out a thanks to his help. There's no tense in his body like you expect when he steps away and waits patiently for you to continue, not asking anymore, not even looking like he cares. But he's listening.
"Oh, thanks… There's a uh, lemon tree up there." You point vaguely in the direction behind him with a small giddy smile before turning and glancing the other direction, motioning towards the path you came from that's lined with fruit trees that he saw on the way in. "There's a few that way too, pears, oranges, apples… They take up so much space but it's worth it."
An impressed hum is the only reply you get when your teeth sink into the flesh of the fruit, the juice coating your tongue pleasantly before you begin to walk towards the back of your orchard.
A small building slips into view while he follows close behind you, a question lingering on his lips that he doesn't get to ask before you speak again, your voice laced with a contentedness that forces the last wisps of dark clouds to dissipate.
"Do you like it here?"
"It is a shed."
Gravel crunches below your feet when you stop in front of the door with a gentle laugh that makes his eyes snap back onto you with a huff, only making your smile widen more at his misunderstanding. It's cute… he's cute. Cool metal ghosts against your fingertips when you reach out to unlock the door while you clarify, your gaze flitting onto him for a fleeting second before the oak gives way and opens with a loud creak that rips across the surface of his mind.
"Not here specifically, Nommy… I mean here, my stand."
"It's fine."
The tease is instant, sunlight caressing your face and catching your eyes, making them glint nearly mischievously when you look back at him and cross your arms over your chest in defiance to his dismissal. Your eyebrow raises slightly as if daring him to continue his refusal to answer normally, but you should have guessed he wouldn't back down with how dangerous his intensity always is, sharp green holding your own and waiting for you to look away.
A challenge to keep looking at him. One you don't care to take.
"Well… Since it's just fine, you can help with deadheading."
Confusion flickers across his face when you turn away to step into the shed with an amused laugh that bubbles into your throat, a small cobweb catching onto the top of your head when you lean to grab the cold pruners and reach out to hand them back to him.
"Nommy…" Indifference laces his gaze when you weakly glare over your shoulder and make another small motion for him to take them from you, his eyes dropping for a second before stepping forward to let you thrust them into his palm. "Thank you."
The harsh cold rests on his fingers when they curl around the blades carefully, a jarring feeling that grounds him through his mild irritation of being in the sun so long that it starts to make him sweat. Metal brushes against wood when you pull a drawer towards yourself to rummage through the small packs of something he can't see, your hair falling slightly over your face when you find what you're looking for and turn quickly to walk back towards him.
"Here, pick some."
His throat bobs hard when he swallows down the sudden saliva that pools on his tongue, warmth kissing his flesh when your fingers brush against his to take back the pruners on his open palm. Instead replacing them with small packets of seeds that he can't make out what they have written on them. God your writing is terrible…
The touch lingers slightly against his skin when you pass with a gentle melodic hum that fills the air, his brows furrowing slightly when you turn to see why he doesn't follow this time… He looks practically offended with the choice of flowers you've given him.
"Are you..." Darkness leaves the honed green when his pupils constrict under the blinding light above you, his gaze snapping from the paper resting on his hand when your voice breaks him out of his bewilderment. "If you don't like these ones, I have some others that I can…"
"How does this benefit you?"
"Oh, well…" Your lips part when your tongue darts out to wet them, an openness that he very frequently gets settling into the air between you when you speak softly, even if it surprises him every time. "I mean, I guess I never asked if you wanted to leave. But…"
Breath catches in your throat when you step closer to him with a small frown, your hand raising slowly to curl his fingers around the light packets of seed resting in his palm, your eyes not meeting his own when the embarrassment laps at your mind. It's only a brief comment but panic seeps into his stomach like corrosive rot at the sudden thought of him leaving, one that spreads through his veins too quickly as it leaves fire in its wake at the realization you might actually want him to.
"But if you wanted to stay, you could plant some." Your fingers don't leave his even while the sharpness of his glare makes your hair stand on end, the tenderness of your touch staying firmly against him and easing his worry long before your voice ever gets the chance to. "I understand if you don't, you know? Just, if you…"
"Why?"
A small blush rushes to his cheeks when you smile happily up at him, your head tilting in the soft sunlight coiling around you both as if you're the only two people that exist, and you are… here at least.
The temptation to lean in and brush your hair out of your face is near overwhelming when you're so close to him that he can smell the lingering remnants of mint on your breath… Fucking mint. How do you make it seem so appealing?
"Because I want you to stay."
Soil clings to the skin on his fingertips when he follows your experienced instructions, a feeling that he hates even if he doesn't complain as much as you would expect him to. The sound of his heartbeat thundering below his ribs almost drowns out the softness in your voice when you move past him, your arm brushing his just barely enough to distract him from his task when you lean over to cut a rose from above his head.
His eyes follow your movement instantly when you twirl the bloom between careful fingers, near black caressing your skin when you fluff up the petals coiling loosely around the pistil…
It's a strange word, one you had to fix his pronunciation on multiple times before he gave up completely on listening to you… well, pretending he wasn't listening to you.
"A little further apart…"
The flower drops lightly into your lap when you move to sit down again, his gaze ripping from you to shift his hand before waiting for your instruction and sinking his finger into the slightly damp dirt. He refuses to glance back when he hears the smile in your voice, gentle… one he knows will claw the last of his sharp composure from him before he can lace another comment with feigned malice.
"Good… That's perfect."
Forget-me-nots, that's the flower he chose, whether he's actually seen them in bloom before you have no clue, he didn't give you an answer… obviously.
But they'll be beautiful surrounding the serrated stems of your roses regardless, you don't think you could have picked better than he did even unintentionally. Dangerous precision weaves into his stare while he places seeds near perfect distance away from each other around the border of the lawn, his brows furrowing faintly when you speak again with a laziness that makes his distraction worse.
"Do you know why they're called forget-me-nots?"
"No."
"Do you want to?"
Exasperation snakes its way around his throat when he glares towards you with a cold snapped reply, only making you grin through his annoyance when his eyes narrow at how brave you continue to be in his subjugating presence… it would be endearing, if you weren't laughing softly at his disdain, even if it's fake. But maybe you already know that.
"You'll tell me regardless. Get on with it."
"You can act like you don't want to know… but you always get huffy when I don't actually tell you"
Warmth settles on his cheeks when you move closer to his side with a sweet smile, the thorn ladened flower resting in your hand while you pick off the sharpened spikes adorning the stem. A scoff falls from his lips when he refuses to answer your small goad before glancing to you when you begin to tell the little story, your voice so gentle that he forgets momentarily what he was doing in the first place.
"There was a knight in France, walking with his lady." Your nail catches another thorn before you pull it from the stalk, not looking up to him while he watches you with complete focus. "He saw a small blue flower on the side of the river, so he bent down to pick it for her… But his armour was too heavy and sent him off balance."
He can barely even care for what you're saying when his gaze drops down to your deft hands for a second before leaning back onto his ankles, the near soft green snapping back up to your face when he forces himself to pay attention… You'd be sad if he didn't, even if he pretends not to care.
Saliva glints against your lips when your tongue drags across them, your eyes watching the petals catch the sunlight beautifully as you make sure all of the thorns have been removed.
"He fell in… and the river dragged him down steam and below the current, but before it could he threw the flower onto the riverside for his lady." Interest coils through his stare when your eyes dart back up to his, your head tilting with a small smile when you press the rose into his soil stained palm before continuing. "Before she lost him, he called out 'forget me not' and that's how it got its name."
There's a beat of silence while he stares down at the flower resting between his near gentle fingers, his throat bobbing when he swallows down his fluster before placing it into his lap and speaking with a dismissive comment that makes you roll your eyes.
"Idiotic. A knight that didn't realize the weight of his own armour? A terrible subordinate and protector for his… lady."
A cascade of pink blocks his vision when he leans to continue planting the seeds with a sweet smile you can't even see, your hand gently nudging his shoulder at his immediate playful disdain for your story before he scoffs out another.
"And there are far better last words."
"It's romantic!… I'd like to see you come up with something better."
"Easily."
His dirt burdened skin wipes quickly against his pants when he sits up with a malicious smirk that makes your blood run cold, his hand running through his still lightly damp hair to push it out of his face.
Warmth brushes your skin so gently that it makes you jump when he curls his fingers around your jaw, his eyes lidded as he leans in so close you can feel the kiss of his breath trace your parted lips, his nose brushing your own when he shifts even closer with a declaration that makes your heart skip.
"Regardless of if my heart still beats, it belongs to you."
His slow exhale entwines with your own when his eyes flutter closed, a lingering second passing that you almost believe will end in him closing the distance to press his lips against yours. It doesn't… and you shouldn't feel disappointed that he moves away with barely another glance over to you, leaving you blinking rapidly in shock.
"I… But he…"
A pleased hum breaks through your stuttering when you snap your mouth shut with a shaky gasp that makes pride blossom in his chest at the affect he continues to have on you, your whisper barely even audible when you mutter a small comment as his fingers pause in their movements.
"He was in a river…"
"And I am not."
Your dazed stare stays locked on him when he continues placing seeds into the soil below, your hesitant nod answering him when you clearly don't trust your voice not to fail you in your endless fluster.
The deep blackened rose rests in his lap carefully out of his way when he shifts closer to you, his fingers brushing across your knee before dropping back into the dirt so purposefully that you can't just believe that it was an accident this time. Your heart jumps erratically at the thought that maybe… maybe he could have meant it. There's no way that he did, it was just teasing… Right?
His lips curl back into a content grin at the glazed over look in your eyes and dark pink blush on your cheeks, completely distracted by his gentle touch and whispered devotion that you clearly can't decide if it meant anything. He doesn't know either...
"Well?"
"Wh… What?"
His voice is interwoven with a playfulness that you aren't used to hearing from him, confusion lapping at your spiralling thoughts when your gaze snaps back up to him, eyes wide while you choke on your weakened questioning... God, this is fucking pathetic.
You can barely string a simple sentence together and now not even one word, and you can't even stop your fluster from overtaking you completely.
"Was it better than 'forget me not' or must I think of something more romantic for you?"
Jotaro, as one could imagine, is a man of science; a very factual individual. Even when he was younger, he was never categorized as very gullible and would only believe a statement if there were facts to back it up.
The Tooth Fairy? Show me the facts
The Easter Bunny? Show me the facts
Santa Clause? Show me the damn facts.
So, one could imagine his surprise when he was out diving one day to get a better understanding of the how coral reefs behave in different atmospheres and spots the top half of a woman with no diving gear peaking at him from behind a large rock. He furrows his brows under his goggles and pursues her as she ducks away from him.
He rounds the corner fast enough to see a bug fish like tail, bigger than any fish he’s ever seen, propelling through the water. He continues to chase the tail about and is even more surprised to find that the owner of the tail is indeed the woman he saw. He tries to motion to her to stop but, she continues on, leaving him in his wake.
He waits around for a while before floating back up and returning to his boat.
‘The coral reefs can wait.’ He tells himself.
…
For the next day or so, he returns to that spot and watches for her from the boat before dropping in to try and communicate. She evades him every time. Soon, he finds himself watching her more than he is trying to pursue her, staying in the boat because he knows she’s something he can’t quite catch.
His efforts to catch her leave Jotaro immensly tired and, he often finds himself falling asleep while looking for the.. mermaid on the boat more often then he doesn’t.
It never bothered him as he made sure to go out on clear days and that he always had enough gas to get back. Besides, sleeping on a boat was quite comforting what with the rocking of the waves.
This day, in particular, is different.
“There’s a storm coming soon, you know.” A gentle voice wakes him from his sleep with a start. He looks in the direction of the voice, across the boat from himself, and sees her leaning on the part of the boat that touched the water for diving. She was just as beautiful in the sun as she was in the water. Jotaro watches her for a moment, trying to make sure this wasn’t a dream.
“Did you hear me? Why are you looking at me like that?” She asks, running a hand through her long hair. Jotaro gets his words together and clears his throat.
“I’ve never seen a mermaid before.” He states simply as she nods in understanding.
“I’ve not seen many of your kind either.” She confesses. They continue to stare at one another before she speaks again:
“There really is a storm coming soon. It’s on the horizon.” She motions off to behind her and, sure enough the clouds were darkening.
“You should be going, ocean man.” He raises an eyebrow at this.
“Kujo, Jotaro Kujo.” He tells her as she exchanges her name as well.
“Will you be here tomorrow, too?” He finds himself asking.
“I can be.” He nods and she watches him for a moment more before pushing off of the boat and disappearing into the sea.
Jotaro left the spot quickly, as to avoid the storm but, couldn’t help looking back as he did. He somehow found himself more interested in the mermaid then he did before.
Little did he know, she felt the same.
…
They would meet many more times, making small talk and the like. Jotaro would ask her questions about the ocean, how things were, how this and that functioned, and she would ask him about the human world, what there he would do for fun and things like that.
“So the dry leg thing is a myth.” He states as she nods.
“I am bound by the ocean. May I ask you another question?”
“Sure.”
“When should I expect to be captured by your kind?” He takes a deep breath at this.
“No one knows you exist. I haven’t told anyone.” He explains as she tilts her head and gives a bored look.
“Everyone tells. And you are a… marine biologist, right? Wouldn’t this be good for you?” Jotario huffs a well knows phrase and looks away.
Over the amount of time he knew her, he felt as if he found something special.
Of course he did, she’s a mermaid but, she wasn’t special like that. She was special in a different way. From his youth to now, he lead a quite social life. Not many friends. His bed was cold and lonely. He felt she was special, special enough that he would, if not for her tail, have her fill a void he had.
“I would never tell. I don’t want.. to put you in danger. You’re.. different.” He explains in that Kujo way he knew.
He loved the way her eyes would light up when she would tell him about something or if he explained a human concept for her; the way her hair looked under water or above water; the way she looked when she swam away or, on some occasions, when she swam by his boat when she would take him deeper into the ocean to show him something; the way he never felt alone after he left her.
“Different? Wouldn’t that make you want to tel–.”
“Yare yare, I care about you, alright?” He blurts out. The oceanic maiden looks taken aback before taking in his statement and look. His blue eyes, downcast and.. nervous? His hair framed his face just as his faint blush did. He looked protected, stand offish but, willing to open up.
‘Genuine.’
“You.. care about me?”
“That’s what I said.” She touches her own warming cheeks, looking down at the water herself. Jotaro steals a glance at her and sighs, wondering if he’s said too much.
“I care about you, too.” She whispers, meeting his glance. She looks down at his lips for a moment, touching her own. Jotaro, for once, picks up the gesture and crosses to her cautiously, bending down and placing a hand on her cheek. It was cool and damp of course in contrast to his hot hand. She leans into it before he presses his lips to hers. He pulls away after a moment.
