I had always dreamt I would have made something of my life, had my name etched into a gold plaque that sat on a heavy oak door. I dreamt of freedom and success; as most young men do. But, I suppose, somewhere during my dreams I was whisked away by the romanticisation of becoming a man— the kind of man that came home with heavy medals on his chest that proved his worth. Proved he was brave.

My father came home in a blaze of glory shortly after grandpa had died. Dad promised he’d be home in one piece but asked me to do something else with my life. He did not want me penetrating the troposphere of disappointment so early in my life.

I did not listen, as most young men don’t. I left on a plane halfway across the globe, thinking fighting for freedom would be what brought me bravery and inner solace.

It brought me a want to die, lack of sleep— an addiction.
