Wanted Connections
"I'd be dead if it weren't for you....Twice, actually": The detail that ol' Vegas Sam neglected to mention during his telling of Ringo's tale is that he actually should have died not just once, but twice. The first time was when his family's farm was attacked and he was shot in the back. The only reason he survived is because someone happened along and patched him up before being on their way. Then, once he was recovered enough to travel, Ringo pursued the raiders who had killed his family, caught up to them, and was shot AGAIN, this time just beneath the heart. Fortunately for Ringo, the person who saved him the first time had a funny feeling he'd need saving a second time and had been secretly following closely behind the entire time. Their paths have crossed every now and again over the years, and every time The Savior can't help but remark with a smirk that it's good to see Ringo still alive. Needless to say, Ringo is incredibly indebted to this person, and even with his own personal code being steadfastly against killing anyone without first firing a warning shot, if this person asked him to kill someone as a favor, he'd probably feel inclined to do it.
"You just went and did the impossible: you made me think about a life after this is all done and settled": The last thing Ringo ever expected after losing his wife was to fall in love again. But ten years is a long time, especially in the wasteland, and the loneliness creeps up on you, especially when you're on a mission that walks you down a path all alone. That's what brought these two together originally; a shared understanding of the need to pursue their own personal missions and the loneliness that came with actually doing it. But what was meant to be a one time temporary comfort ended up becoming a habit. They always seemed to end up in the same towns at the same times, and always found themselves taking comfort in each other's company again; after all, what harm was there in running it back one more time? He isn't sure exactly when it happened, but Ringo eventually realized that at some point she became something more to him than someone to fall into bed with. Their life together could be great if they could just find it in themselves to let go of their respective missions, but since neither of them can do that, the best they can hope for is stolen moments of happiness in between all the dust and grime.
"You watch my back and I'll watch yours.": Bounty hunting is dangerous work. There's also no shortage of scum out there in the wastes that needs to be brought to justice. That's why Ringo and this muse realized that they could both benefit from agreeing to a partnership. The arrangement is simple: Each of them takes on a separate bounty, and they both go out into the wastes together in pursuit of both. Working together means having someone to watch your six, and both get to walk away with a nice payday. It works nicely, and has resulted in a lot fewer flesh wounds since the partnership started.
"I won't forget what you did": This is someone that Ringo pursued the bounty of and was able to bring in alive. Ultimately, whether they actually served their time or secured release in some other way they're now out there again, and haven't forgotten that it was Ringo who turned them in. They could be plotting revenge, or maybe their blood just boils any time they see Ringo, but they haven't forgotten, and they aren't going to. Bonus points if they hate him, but also feel a begrudging amount of gratitude towards him because he brought them in alive when he didn't have to. We love complex feelings here.
