When someone says a fact about Greek Mythology that I didn’t know about
At 22 years old I'm working in the hospital I was taken to when my eating disorder almost killed me. It really does get better...even if I had several panic attacks at the start of the week because I was nervous
If the “emotional labor” you’re going through isn’t something your income and livelihood is dependent on, it’s not emotional labor. That term specifically exists for the way working class people especially sex workers and retail workers have to regulate and suppress their emotions and the way their livelihood is dependent on that. If you’re using that term to describe your interpersonal relationships and your friends and partners wanting emotional support, you’re obnoxiously misusing that term.
The use of “labor” in emotional labor is literal. It’s talking about your actual labor. Your job. Your way of making money. It isn’t a metaphor for listening to your friends talk.
just fyi per an interview with the woman who coined the term, she does say that interpersonal relationships and navigating situations with stressful emotions do count as “emotional labor.” she even goes on to say that emotional labor can sometimes be enjoyable, or willing.
what she is very specific about not regarding emotional labor is physical or mental labor-- when she has spoken against the term’s usage, it’s been because people have applied it to household chores themselves, as if folding laundry is emotional labor. but the emotional work of managing someone else’s emotions is, per her own opinion, emotional labor of a kind.
With a degree in Sociology I'm here to tell you that OP is right, and referring to emotional (and aesthetic) labour completed by working class people in low paying jobs where they have to adjust their behaviour in order to appear likeable and in the company's image (e.g. Disney World workers) is absolutely right, but emotional labour also exists in the way they say it doesn't. in the example of women who work the 'triple shift' - employment (paid work), household chores (unpaid work) and emotional labour (the emotional effort they put into their relationship with their children, primarily) while their husbands only work and contribute very little within the home.
Note, some of these women may be working 2 types of emotional labour, if a mother has a job in customer facing role, she will be performing an emotional labour at work for the customers, when she comes home she will perform different emotional labour (building and maintaining relationships) within her home
Me, in November 2018, applying for a volunteer Role with a children’s charity: this short term, once a week for 3 months project will be a good experience for me to gain skills and help people!
Me, now, after 3 sessions of volunteering, crying in bed while reading a report on children who have lived in extreme poverty because their councils won’t help their parents due to their immigration status: how am I going to interview and transcribe interviews of these parents and write a follow up report
Me, now, 6 months after starting this role, crying in bed while reading an exclusive pre release copy of a high profile book on children's experiences of f-o-od pover-t-y: wait, these kids are in poverty but I know I used to eat a lot less than the food they're describing
Me: *remembers I had an eating disorder and refused to eat food and there are kids who want to eat but cant*
Me: oh

Thing and I hate that they cancelled this show. I have 12 and a half episodes to watch but I miss it already
I just had this realization that Kit Kats used to be wrapped in foil and have paper labels and I’m reeling that I remembered this and that I lived through the transition to plastic wrappers.
My mind is actually blown like…I can’t complete I forgot that
Whoa. You conjured memories I didn’t know I even had.
this image catapulted my consciousness into my seven year old body
So I looked it up and they changed to plastic wrappers in 2001 so basically gen z has no memory of any of this
No wonder i was so confused lmao I was born in 2001
M&Ms replaced tan with blue in 1995 and 12-year-old me had OPINIONS about it
Is anyone else still angry that the green Skittles used to be lime and now we’re stuck with this trash apple?
^^^ and the fact that they no longer make lemon Jolly Ranchers for the mixed bags.
I don't know about the others but Kit Kat in the U.K. is still wrapped in foil and paper...
I've come out of The 100 tumblr retirement to say I love the new season so far and congrats to Bob and Eliza on their marriage
Several chapters into Fire and Blood for the first time and I'm still in awe of the world building George R R Martin is capable of
It’s so funny to see this shock from Daenerys’ fans. The rest of us saw this coming years ago and purely because we didn’t have our heads wedged up her white haired ass. Her sweet dragons murder children, she burns people alive for not kneeling to her tyrannical rule, her politics consist of setting anyone who gets in her way on fire with a smirk. When she was being painted as a grotesque savior like figure, nobody cared about the astonishingly racist imagery in her arc then. When all her enemies were terrible brown slavers/rapists/savages/barbarians, none of her now pearl clutching fans had shit to say but, “YASSS! OMG KHALEESI!”.
She liberates slaves just to leave them in a state somehow even fucking worse than they started (not counting the ones she has fight for her as “free” men), in such ruin that they beg to be sold back into slavery. She goes around conquering lands that never asked for her apparent benevolence and yet never sticks around to see her rule through or to make any real change worthy of her dozen or so monikers. She swears she’s not here to kill but her passionate war speeches followed by killing say otherwise. She spills over in her hypocrisy, insisting she- so different from the hundred others seeking the Iron Throne- is here to break some wheel when she is the truest representative of it; she spent seasons screaming of her birthright through a mad tyrant that Westeros fought to be rid of, swore she would come to rule a land that has never wanted her and immediately burned her prisoners of war alive at their first words of rejection. She smiles when the weary and impoverished people who have told her they do not wish to be ruled by her, cower in terror when her overgrown lizards fly by. Her advisors have to beg her not to use them to set people ablaze every step of the way. She threatens fire and blood to everyone who doesn’t pledge their allegiance to her.
And yet it somehow surprises you that she isn’t the good guy.
I love Arya Stark so much that I stopped watching Game of Thrones when they decided to change her storyline and depower her (that's right, Arya is a warg in the books!) but her killing the Night King with a single stab isn't what I wanted. They at least used the blade that Joffrey sent to kill Bran in his bed, but it was too easy. Not enough magical elements, give me Nissa Nissa 2.0
Becoming increasingly frustrated with the entire concept of “weed-out” classes at an undergraduate academic level.
IF you have a deliberately engineered a class that has a pass rate of less than 40%, you are a bad teacher! That is UNCONSICIONABLE in a world where a single college course can easily cost over $1000 plus books and materials! These are undergrads! Their ability to continue to attend school and get out with a Bachelor’s in ANYTHING is probably reliant on scholarships and grants and loans, and you are PROUD of designing a money-pit deliberately set up to make them fail?? Absolutely disgusting tbh
America is so fucked up. I got a degree without paying a single penny for reading material, everything was provided for us, to the point where several lecturers went out of their way to circulate newly released off limit to general public articles because they wanted us to have as much understanding and knowledge as possible. And I didn't even go to a Red Brick university in England
I won't applaud Arrow for making amends in the latest episode because they should have never killed off Earth 1 Dinah Laurel Lance in the first fvcking place
There are MCU fans who ship middle aged Tony Stark and Wade Wilson with underage Peter Parker and I'm just glad they don't have a character like Billy Batson to exploit
UPDATE: EW has confirmed that Emily Bett Rickards will not be returning for Arrow’s eighth and final season. Here’s a statement from ex
This is so incredibly hilarious, after how toxic some of her fan base has been towards other actresses and real life people (SA's wife) and how the character derailed the show, the fact that she won't be in the final season at all is justice. This character will be quickly forgotten in any history of Green Arrow.
