Onboard the Atlas, Colleen makes plans for her daughter’s eighteenth birthday party, but during wartime, some things just don’t go according to plan.

Pidge stays out past her curfew, which upsets her parents, especially Sam, who can’t understand why Pidge would fall for a boy who isn’t her intellectual equal. What exactly does she see in Lance?

Meanwhile, Keith is bearing the terrible burden of responsibility as the Black Paladin, and not even Shiro understands what he’s going through. Allura is there to support Keith when he has to make a terrible choice.

Hunk is the best and most supportive friend Lance and Pidge could hope for, but even he falls apart in this story in which nearly everyone is an emotional wreck, especially Colleen Holt who has come to realize that her little girl is a grown woman who makes her own choices. Pidge must make an important decision on her eighteenth birthday which will break both of her parents’ hearts.

This is an angsty sequel to my earlier fic “Clear Day.” Get the tissues ready, and don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Sooooo I’m not a fan of romance - I have never ever ever read a romance fanfic intentionally. However, Pidge content is nearly non-existent in this fandom, so I was like, what the heck, let’s give this one a try.

Um.

Ma’am.

Where do you get off on making me ship Lance and Pidge so freaking hard. In a STEAMPUNK AU, no less. I cannot believe how much I love this fic. I cannot BELIEVE I am so looking forward to the next chapter of a romantic story.

Two things I especially want to say though: firstly, I think your writing is incredible. It’s hard to find well-written content about my smol paladin, let alone VERY well-written content, and your story has delivered in every way, shape and form in that area. Your writing is fantastic, and your characterization is SPOT ON - you’ve kept each character as exactly themselves while also somehow finding a way to package them in the whatever-century steampunk exists in??? *chef’s kiss* Increíble. I don’t know how you do it.

Secondly, two days after reading the scene where Pidge pretends to be Lance as they rehearse for the ball, I am still thinking about it and cackling. That has been my absolute favorite part of this story thus far.

ANYWAYS, rant over, I hope your day/week/month is as amazing as your writing is.

"Say it. Say, 'Lance had a great idea.'"

"Noooo!"

Poke, poke, poke. "Say it. "Lance is a genius.'"

"Never."

“You can do this,” Pidge says, reaching for his hand. “I know you can.”

“Thanks,” Lance says. His hand is slack in hers but he leans down, forehead to hers. The gratitude in his eyes fills her with both warmth and a note of guilt.

Here at the possible end of all things, with everything at stake, there’s so much she wants to say. Words never come easy for Pidge. Least not words that are bound up in messy organic stuff like emotion. Science? She can pontificate on science for hours, but verbal expressions of feelings? Confessions wrought of vulnerability? Nope.

Nevertheless, she knows she hasn’t always been the best of friends. From the day she laid eyes on him, the silly, scrawny boy dancing before the Galaxy Garrison academy’s assignment board, she’s loved him. But also resented that love, because she was made to do bigger things than pine over hopeless crushes. Resentment begat jealousy, more resentment and frustration, and it honed her tongue to a fine edge, cutting him with teenage cruelty.

He’s forgiven her, right? He’s hers now, against all odds. But an apology is still in order, a recompense for adolescent slights. But the apology has stayed in her mouth, held not by her usual stubbornness, but fear. Fear that her apology for past slights will remind him of who she is and isn’t. Katie “Pidge” Holt. Blunt, science-obsessed, a far cry from fairytale princesses schooled in the gentle art of diplomacy.

Cold, hard logic, that which orders her life, dictates that her fears are irrational. It’s not like he’s forgotten the past. He loves her despite, possibly even because of all that she is and was. But the apology still hangs in her mouth.

I’m sorry for all the times I made you feel stupid. You’re not stupid. You play dumb too much, but you’re smarter than even you know.

Instead, she gives him what she can at this moment.

“You’ve got this. I believe in you. The whole team believes in you.”

"Pidge, you've been in the lab for ten hours." Lance clapped his hands to draw her attention away from the holoscreen.

She hunched her shoulders and leaned closer to the screen, fingers swiping and rearranging code. "Almost done."

"You said that three hours ago. When's the last time you ate?"

She paused and shot him a guilty glance over her glasses. "I dunno."

"You haven't eaten since breakfast, have you?"

"Mmmm, may-be?"

He stalked over to the workstation. "That's it. We're going home." He gently but firmly collected her in his arms, all while she reached toward the keyboard like a child pulled from a favorite toy.

"Nooo!" she protested.

"Yes."

"Unhand me, you fiend!" She glowered at him.

"You love this fiend. Kiss me."

"No. No kisses for you. You're impeding the advancement of science. Luddite."

"That's Mr. Luddite to you. Kiss me anyway."

Surrendering, because she always did, she kissed him, although she punctuated the kiss with a playful nip to his lower lip.

Well, Bex Taylor Klaus wants to do a tell all on Voltron Legendary Defender. Thought she or another soul would want to save this for a milestone like the show being removed from Netflix (Apparently it’s leaving the platform forever December 14, 2024) or Amazon Studios/MGM casting their live-action Voltron movie. I guess there’s the fact that the Filipino GMA network managed to release a live-action Voltes V and announce a live action Tosho Daimos before a live action Voltron movie because of how badly Legendary Defender hurt the brand.

Anyway, considering Bex was ALLEGEDLY one of the behind the scenes voices pushing for representation and the altering of scenes in Season 8, this oughta be quite the crapstorm. Let’s see if she can explain why the giant robot show that should have been the easiest thing to market got a fandom that was so brutally insane and creatives that hated giant robots.

“Pointy chin?” Lance pulled Pidge close, puffing a tickling burst of air into her ear. “Who you callin’ ‘Pointy chin?’”

“Careful. You could put an eye out with that pointy chin,” she said between giggles. She prided herself in being the sort of woman who never giggled, but he always reduced her to this.

“So says the person who has to look up to look down.” His fingers were searching for a ticklish spot on her ribs.

“Short jokes?” She rolled her eyes. “That’s the best you can do, Spaghetti Legs? Short jokes?”

“Short people got no reason…” he sang.

“That song isn’t actually about short people but instead referring to—”

“Short people,” he sang. “They got grubby little fingers.” He squeezed her hand. “And dirty little minds.”

She giggled again. Dammit! “You love my dirty mind.”

“I do.”

Then he kissed her neck and she lost the clever retort poised on her tongue.
