my brother had taken a red eye to seattle.   an otherwise innocent trip if not for the spontaneity of it.    it wasn’t entirely unlike forty to up and leave as his inspiration struck,   but usually he told me before he boarded.   instead,   i had woken up to an emoji riddled text detailing when he’d be back the next day.   lucy and sunshine had spent the better part of the morning reminding me that my sibling is a grown man,   that he can take care of himself.   but they don’t know him like i do.    they don’t know how fragile his stability can be and how little it takes to push him over the edge.   they forbade me from buying my own flight to follow him.    it’s only a day,   lovey,    gabe had reminded me.   gabe,   with his ever-present rational and velvety smooth voice,   was my rock.   he had clutched my hand and promised me that no one would stand in my way if forty didn’t come back in 24 hours.    i gave in.    kind of.

with every buzz of my phone,   i hurriedly unlocked the screen in hopes of an update.   sure,   i couldn’t follow forty,    i’m a woman of my word.    but it wasn’t hard to hire people who could.    i slammed my phone down a little too hard in disappointment when the notification had only been a daily affirmation.    any louder and i might have missed mason’s concern.    ❝   what ?   oh   —    ❞   i exhaled loudly and it felt like the weight of the world tied me down.   my legs felt leaden and my spine a coiled spring.    ❝   it’s forty.    he left for seattle last night without telling me.   and i just,   you know,   i worry for him.    ❞   looked at mason and prayed that i didn’t sound insane.    that I didn’t come off as the overbearing sibling who doesn’t know how to loosen her leash.    ❝   do you happen to know if there’s any film festival there today ?   or a director visiting or something ?   forty didn’t really explain himself and I can’t get a hold of him.    ❞ one day, my brother would drive me to insanity.
