Nie Huaisang & Lan Xichen after Jin Guangyao’s death at the Guanyin Temple
For writing reasons I revisited this particular scene. And since I just love speculating about Nie Huaisang… Have my headcanons about this:
Killing Jin Guangyao in this way was not planned. The poison hadn’t worked. His brother’s corpse hadn’t killed him before being subdued. Lan Wangji’s attack had only cost him an arm, not his life. But Jin Guangyao could not be allowed to live on, he could not be allowed to leave that place alive. Nie Huiaisang knew Lan Xichen well; he probably realized it would break his heart. And while his decision was that it had to be done, I think you can see that he regretted how he had to use Lan Xichen.
Also, when he finally leaves - with Jin Guangyao’s hat in his hand - there is no triumph. Not even a small smile of relief. His gaze is empty.
