about “Naughty”

it’s actually very refreshing to see that THIS is the inside of Matilda’s mind

it’s her big song that really says who she is as a person, as a child. in the rest of the musical, Matilda is always pretty serious and not very playful. she’s creative, sure, but she tends to keep a straight face and not really engage with her peers in a playful way. 

BUT you have to keep in mind that on the inside she’s this little ball of energy who pretends to shoot laser beams and know karate and that the floor is lava! her abusive upbringing just brought her in a place where those traits are dangerous for her at home and she actively pushes down everything that can be used against her, but they were there the whole time. 

that last cartwheel with Miss Honey

is all the more meaningful because the whole story is about Matilda reclaiming her childhood and her right to be silly and carefree and fun as she wants to be on the inside.
