THE FUTURE - PEER REVIEW
This is the feedback that Lillie gave me about my work. I liked sharing my work with her because she is someone I haven’t really communicated with in the course yet so it as good to get a different perspective on my work. The feedback she gave me was really positive which I am glad to hear and gives me a lot of confidence about my work. I wish she’d written something about things I can improve on next project but I’m happy that she’s clearly gone through all my work and analysed what I’ve written. I now know what I’m doing right and what to continue doing during my FMP.
The Future - Time Spent on Project
I am quite happy with the amount of time I spent on each aspect of the project. I feel as though things are quite balanced and I was able to prioritise a lot better than I have in the past.
Workings out: 7.75 x 5 = 38.75

THE FUTURE - FINAL IMAGES
I decided to choose these as my final images but I think that they meet the project brief quite well. For the first image, I love the use of colour contrast and the way I’ve used the rule of thirds to really bring the focus point to the fishing line. I also like the way the ocean is in the background and slightly out of focus because I wanted to show how litter is effecting the beaches and how soon litter will be the main focus on beaches since there is so much of it. For the second image, I loved the way the bike light looked like a rock the way it was just placed in the sand. I also thought it was interesting to show how litter travels as it is unlikely that someone was cycling on the beach so it could have been washed down by rain or washed on shore by the sea. I like the use of rule of thirds and how the tones in the image are quite similar to create a more appealing photo. I decided to add text on top of the images to make it appear more like a campaign photo for the Devon Wildlife Trust. I made the more important parts of the text the same colour as the focal points in the image to draw the focus to the text as well.
The Future - Final Evaluation
When I did my research into Andy Hughes I gained a lot of inspiration in the way he used a macro lens to do close up photography and this led me to try this in my own work. I was really inspired by the somewhat controversy of his images as some say he ‘glamorises’ litter. Although I can see where people are coming from, I think the bigger picture of how much litter there is on beaches provides a much stronger message. This is something that I hoped to include in my own photography.
For this project, there was inspiration everywhere. I'd see litter everywhere in the streets and want to photograph it if I had my camera on me. I'm really passionate about beaches because I live so close to one. This meant when I was there I was able to see how much damage litter was doing to this beautiful environment
My research influenced the development of my own work because originally I wasn't too interested in macro photography before I researched Andy Hughes. He inspired me to go out and do a shoot using a macro lens for the first time and although I'm not planning on using any of the images for final pieces, I'm really proud of my first attempt using this lens.
I think I could have gone into a lot more detail with how many people I researched. I wish I'd gone into more detail about how other people's work impacted mine and how I went about my project.
My work is based around the brief of the Devon Wildlife Trust. I wanted to present how much litter there was destroying the marine environments by going to beaches and cleaning up what I found whilst photographing.
Since we were given the brief, I had quite a strong idea in my mind about what I wanted to do. Therefore, my ideas didn't change too much. However, through my research into other photographers I began to understand different ways in which I could go about presenting my ideas.
How well did the work you produced communicate the ideas behind your project? I think since the ideas behind my project were quite simple, my way of communicating them were successful. I wish I was able to produce more images so that I could present an even stronger message, but I am happy with the overall outcome.
What English and Maths skills did you use/improve with your project work or photography skills? I used my English skills when I did my work on recognising bias in text. I had to think about the way in which each article was written and different techniques that they used in their writing. I also had to evaluate my images and analyse other photographers and this meant my technical language skills were put to the test. I've always thought my English skills were quite good and have been further improved with this project. In terms of Maths, I don't feel as though there was as much Maths this project as there has been for the last few. However, I still used them when creating a pie chart about marine litter where I also had to work out percentages.
I used a macro lens for the first time this project which was quite interesting. It took quite a while to get used to but I really enjoyed using it and want to purchase one for personal use in the future. For the 4D element of the project, I had to use Adobe Premiere which I had never used before. This was really difficult to get used to but with help from the lecturers and a student in the Creative Media course I was able to get a good understanding of how the program works and how I can use it in future projects to my advantage. We also did some panoramic photography which I hadn't done it quite a while. My first attempt wasn't great but after that I started to get the hang of it and was able to produce some more appealing outcomes.
For this project there weren't many new things that could push myself to do. However, there were a lot of times when it was difficult for me to get the hang of new software that we'd never used before. When I was using Adobe Premiere, there were a lot of times where I just wanted to give up. However, I pushed myself to keep going and was able to produce a really strong 4D outcome.
Through our peer assessment sessions, I was able to understand how people created their outcomes. Some of them required a lot of behind the scenes work that I wouldn't have understood beforehand including popping a balloon full of water. I also learnt from my peers how to use Adobe Premiere and create a good stop motion video.
I had to understand respect and professionalism when taking pictures at the beach because I needed to understand that some people may not want to have their picture taken if they are in the background. I also had to respect my environment and make sure to clean up any litter I found.
I really enjoyed the last peer assessment because I spoke to someone in the class I'd never spoken to before and it was really interesting to see her perspective of the brief and how her ideas compared to mine.
My drive was really important for this project because when I was using Adobe Premiere there were a lot of times that I wanted to give up. However, I was able to push through it and keep myself motivated.
Understand responsibilities as a person and as a student. As a person and a student I understand that I have responsibilities to look after the environment and be respectful. I am aware of my personal voice and freedom of speech and I feel in this project I have been able to voice my opinion on marine pollution quite strongly.
Thanks to this project I have a really strong understanding of why we work with other people. I feel as though if I didn't go to a student in Creative Media for help with the Adobe Premiere aspect of this project I would have really struggled to create a good 4D piece of work.
I had to think a lot about deadlines for this project and I feel compared to other projects I have been able to meet deadlines more efficiently. I also feel as though I have been quite punctual and understand the importance of being in college as much as possible and being on time.
I managed my stress levels by taking a deep breath and trying to stay calm. I didn't take on more than I could handle and tried to not give myself too little time to complete too many things.
Since I care a lot about the marine environment, I put a lot of effort into my work as I really wanted to create a strong final piece. I was really passionate about this project and I feel as though that shows in my amount of research into marine pollution.
I've always taken a lot of care and pride in the presentation of my work. I make sure that my blog remains appealing and clean so that it is easy to navigate and presents my work nicely and effectively.
During photo shoots there was a lot of issues with the weather as it was often raining or really windy. However, I just made sure to keep a stronger hold on my tripod and I tried to use the poor weather to my advantage instead of disadvantage. It also got quite dark during a photo shoot so instead of packing up and going home I decided to create a dark panoramic image which I feel as though came out fairly good.
I did learn more about working in creative industries because the brief we were given was from Devon Wildlife Trust which meant that it would be quite similar to what it would be like if we were working professionally alongside another company. I learnt about how to stick to the brief and produce an outcome that both the client and myself are happy with.
I feel as though the work that I produced does meet the client brief because I created 2D, 3D, and 4D pieces of work which promotes the message of sustainability by showing an audience how much litter there is on the beaches and explaining how it could impact the marine environment. I found the brief fairly easy because it was something I was passionate about and so I found it a lot easier to motivate myself to create a strong outcome.
I really enjoyed getting to understand Adobe Premiere and how I can create stop motion videos. I hope there are more 4D elements in future project so that I can practice it more. I also enjoyed the amount of freedom we had and choice with the two briefs as it made me feel as though the work was more my own.
I am most proud of my stop motion video and my HDR image that I created. These were two things that I had never created before and for first attempts I feel as though they are really strong pieces of work. I am least proud of my macro photography work because I feel as though if I did it again I'd be able to create better outcomes.
I want to work on trying out some more interesting things on Photoshop and maybe create some more surreal pieces. I am quite good with Photoshop so I want to present the skills that I haven’t yet shown.
Any feedback I’ve gotten from people has been fairly positive. I’ve been told to include a bit more research so that I have more things to compare my work to which I understand and am going to try and do next project.
My 4D task was to create a stop-motion piece that worked alongside the brief. I decided to use a rubber duck in a bowl of water with the water level rising to represent how the water levels are rising and it is damaging the habitats of the wildlife. I use a camera to take multiple pictures that stitched them together using Adobe Premiere. I am really impressed with how it turned out because it was my first time using Adobe Premiere and I think I got the hang of it quite quickly. I struggled quite a bit with getting all the images in order because every time I’d put them on the timeline they’d muddle up. However, it took a long time but I eventually was able to put them all in the right order and working properly. There were no particular artists that inspired me but I did take a lot at some stop-motion and time lapse pieces which I thought were really effective. I wish I’d been able to create a time lapse piece as well as I did a lot of research for it. I’m going to see if I’m able to create something like this in the next project.
Recognising Bias in Text
To present our English skills for this project we had to analyse two texts whilst thinking about bias. I started by reading an article in the Daily Mail which discussed how Donald Trump refused to speak with Prince Charles as they had very conflicting views about global warming. I believe that the article was most likely aimed towards adults and older people who have an interest in politics and current events. The language is fairly complex which is why I am led to believe that it is aimed towards an older audience. The article gave me quite negative feelings towards Donald Trump as I felt as though he was being quite disrespectful towards Prince Charles when describing their meeting as if it would be a ‘lecture’. It also made me annoyed about how he isn’t even willing to consider anyone else’s opinion which shows how close-minded he is. I feel as though this article is fairly biased because of how negative the writer was towards Trump. However, I do agree with the way they presented him and so it doesn’t bother me too much.
The second text I read was from The Guardian and it was also discussing Trump and Prince Charles. I feel as though this article was a lot more informative and didn’t seem too biased either way. The writer took into account both sides of the argument and didn’t seem to push any side more than the other. Similarly to the Daily Mail article, the language is complex yet not too difficult to understand which leads me to believe that this is also aimed towards an older audience.
The article I prefer is the one from The Guardian because I think it is a lot less biased and doesn’t stress one side or the other. In contrast, the Daily Mail definitely seems to show a lot of negativity towards Donald Trump and although I didn’t disagree with it, I’d prefer if it showed a more balanced argument.

(2D) BOVISAND BEACH PANORAMIC
When we went to Bovisand beach I decided to set up my tripod and take a panoramic image of the scene. I thought the clouds and the sky looked really pretty and I loved the blue hue everything had. However, it was really difficult to set up because of how dark the scene was and the windy meant it was difficult to keep the tripod still. However, I’m really happy with how this image turned out and I think it’s a good panoramic image. On my last panoramic I struggled with keeping the correct exposure throughout and I think I managed to tackle the issue in this picture. Overall, I think I’ve improved a lot in terms of my knowledge regarding panoramic photography and I look forward to creating more images like this in the future.
PROJECT TIMEPLAN REFLECTION
I decided to look back my timeplan and see how things are going. I highlighted in green the things that I have completed and uploaded to my blog and highlighted in red the things I haven’t. I completely forgot about the recognising bias in text task and plan to do that next. I never found time to do the Bantham and Torcross beach shoots but I do have more shoots planned this week before I think about putting together my final images.
(4D) TIME-LAPSE PHOTOGRAPHY TUTORIAL
As I am not experienced at all in time-lapse photography, I thought I’d do a lot of research into what the best way to do it would be and how. I found this tutorial in YouTube that was really informative and talked a lot about what is best for each situation. I wrote a few notes whilst watching the video that I could look back on when I do time-lapse myself.
Use manual if you have relatively constant light
- Full creative control over your exposures
- Significantly reduces time-lapse flicker
What is time-lapse flicker?
- Unintended exposure jumps
Composition Tips
- Make sure you’re in the best possible spot
- Do you want to limit focus?
- Watch the frame edges
- Rule of thirds
Time-lapse interval - Controls how fast a scene appears in a final compilation
1 second interval at 1/30 second playback means it plays at 30x speed
Short interval = Slower smoother motion
Long interval = Faster jerkier motion
EXAMPLE
Goal: (How long you want the video) 12 seconds
FPS: 30fps
30 x 12 = 360 shots
360 x 2 seconds (interval) = 720 seconds worth of shoots (12 minutes)
With an ND (Neutral density) filter you can shoot at a lower shutter speed without being over-exposed
(3D) BEESANDS BEACH SHOOT - More images
I decided to look back at some of the pictures I’d taken at Beesands and decided that there were a few good ones that I didn’t post. I really liked these three because I think they all had a good composition and good use of rule of thirds. I also think the colours are really strong in all three. The top one has a good contrast between the solid white surrounded by the colourful sand. It creates a really strong focal point as the eye is drawn immediately subject. The second image doesn’t have quite as strong a contrast but it is still there. The fact that the straw isn’t as detailed and ‘busy’ as the sand around it means that the focus point becomes the straw. The final image uses a strong amount of colour contrast between the bright orange and the brown sand. The only thing I don’t like is the fact it’s not really litter since it’s a buoy. To edit the images I opened them up in Camera RAW and played with the exposure and temperature until I was happy with the outcome. I also increased the contrast slightly in them so that they were more impactful. In the future I want to vary my compositions a bit more because I always lean towards the rule of thirds being the main ideas with my compositions.
(4D) The difference between stop-motion and time-lapse
Stop-Motion and Time-Lapse video are very different. Stop-Motion has forced-inconsistent time between frames, while time-lapse has consistent time between frames. Time Lapse is the process of taking many still pictures from the same viewpoint, over a set period of time, whereas the time between frame shots is consistent, to give the illusion of time passing quickly. With stop motion, often the artists have to manipulate the materials in front of the camera, and, therefore, they're controlling when that photograph is taken. It's not simply serving to create the passage of time going faster, but actually create illusions of movement and tell a story that's been specifically designed. So while they are very closely related and they are both image sequences that are put back together, they're very different in their approaches and the way that one would design for either technique.
(4D) DEADLINE STOP MOTION CRITICAL REVIEW
This is a really detailed stop motion video made using post-it notes and post-production techniques. I really admire this work because of how detailed it is and the amount of thought and effort that went into it. I probably wouldn’t use stop motion in my project though because I can’t really think of a way I can make it relevant although I will definitely give it a shot. The only issue I have with it is how jumpy and time consuming it must be although the video above is an excellent example of stop motion and I really like it.
CARBON FOOTPRINT CALCULATOR
Today we took a test to see the percentage of our carbon footprint. My score was 141% which isn’t ideal at all. I found out that 55% of it was due to travel as I take a 1.5 hour long bus journey twice a day for 3 days a week. I was quite surprised because I didn’t think buses would raise my percentage up that much. I also had one return plane journey to California which probably raised it up quite a bit too. I would try and reduce it but the bus journeys are essential for my education so I can’t help it any time soon.
(4D) CHAD CHUD TIMELAPSE CRITICAL REVIEW
Chad Chud’s timelapses are excellent in showing how an area looks during differen times of the day. Unlike a lot of time lapses, he moves the camera during a lot of them to gain more than one perspective on the subject which I really like. He uses a 6 foot crane in the moving ones and I think it makes them a lot stronger. They’re also really smooth which makes them more powerful. I think I’d like them more if they were longer as you don’t get a long time to look at each scene. However, I admire the way he has put lots of timelapses together in this vimeo clip to extend the length of the overrall video. Although I can’t create a smooth moving time lapse as I don’t have a crane, I really want to do some time lapses through different times of the day if I can. If not, I’m going to try and get some of the ocean moving over a period of time.
(3D) SECONDARY RESEARCH - COLLEEN SLATER
Slater has been living in Brighton since 1978. She has a background in Fine Art painting and has been working as a photographer since 2006. Her main interest is macro photography and she aims to capture things that our out of the ordinary and that you wouldn’t be able to capture without a macro lens. Slater also lectures on macro photographer and tutors digital imaging software. She also accept commissions for event photography and portraiture. She is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society and her work is regularly shown in international exhibitions as well as multiple publications.
‘Evidence of ‘having a good time’ remains on the beach the day after the night before; bottle tops, cans, travel tickets, jewellery, cigarette butts, party poppers…
Now obsolete phone boxes on the promenade are covered in advertising flyers; posters and stickers are taped or blue-tacked on then torn off or pasted over with newer ones; a top layer of graffiti adds to the visual cacophony. A kaleidoscope of ever-changing patterns form on the surface of the translucent glass as the shapes and colours of passers are seen through it and the light changes through the day.’
I quite like Slater’s work because of how bright it is as it really draws attention to the subject. Her work is somewhat similar to Andy Hughes due to the ‘glamorisation’ of beach littering through macro photography. My favourite image from above is probably either the one of the feather or the one of the fork. I like the one of the feather because of the central composure and the excellent depth of field. With the fork, I like the contrast between the blue tones in the forks and the brassy tones of the rocks. I really want to practice some more of this kind of photography in my own shoots.
(2D) TUESDAY 21ST FEBRUARY 2017 - Architecture Shoot
Today we went up to Plymouth University to do some architectural photography. We had to think a lot about the composition of our images including where we wanted the focus point to be and how lines can impact that. I’m quite happy with how my images came out because I think they offer quite a unique presentation of the building with angles that not many people may have seen or captured before. My favourite image is definitely the first image because I have used leading lines well to draw the focus point towards the centre. I also like how in this image there is a strong use of rule of thirds where a third of the image is sky and the other two thirds are the building. I quite like the simplicity of it too with the only subjects being the walls and the windows. For the second image I really like how you can’t really tell what this is. Despite this being a simple photo, the unique architectural choices with shapes make the building somewhat recognisable and makes the viewer think more about what they are looking at. For the third image, I really like my use of lines to show the zig-zag shape in the roof. However, I think it does look a bit wonky and if my angle of view was different then maybe the image could have turned out a bit stronger. For the fourth image, I really like the angular view of the building which again creates an abstract kind of feel. It is the same area as the first image but the different view point offers an entirely different perspective. Overall, I am happy with this shoot and will consider architectural photography in the future but just not for this project as I am focusing on the marine environment.
(3D) BEACH CLEAN - 12.07.17
On February 7th I went to Beesands beach with my mum and dad to take some pictures and collect litter. We spent about half an hour walking up and down the beach finding things and I would get down and take close up pictures. I also put all the litter I found in a pile and took pictures of it all together. I’m really proud of how much we picked up because my parents don’t usually do this kind of thing and bearing in mind the stuff they were saying about it I think I really helped alter their thoughts on plastic pollution and the damage it’s causing to the marine environment. When I took these pictures I didn’t have a macro lens and so it was quite difficult for me to get down and really take good close ups. However, I plan on doing another beach shoot soon where I can take more close up pictures and more in the style of the photography I looked at in the library research task, Andy Hughes. I really like the composition of my images in the first three pictures. I think I did a good job with working the aperture and depth of field to my advantage as well as my use of colour.
