"Ah, all three at once, then? I had assumed this was more of a chainsmoking indulgence situation. Three really is the limit at once-- any more and it's only fit for a mediocre throwaway variety show bit."
"A collection of short stories might be an option-- Shirley Jackson, perhaps? She's only a little after your time." Though he didn't know if Hell might blunt the edges of the horror in her works, or if the conceptual and nebulous nature of most might still unsettle or entertain.
"Otherwise, have you ever tried taking apart some utterly ridiculous tripe of a book while passing it back and forth with someone, and each of you do the character voices? That, alcohol, some form of smoke-able, and either a comfortable patch of couch or floor, or even a decently sized bubble bath, have provided many an evening's entertainment through the years." Alastor certainly had the voice for it. And possibly the humour.
"It's more of a spur of the moment indulgence with little desire for doing the sensical thing. Nicotine and smoke are all I really want - does not quite matter the how."
But it seemed as though he would not be getting that immediately, his attention turning to the other with a slight lift of his ears.
"Mm. I've read a few of Jackson's works. Not all. The Haunting of Hill House I think was the popular one when it came around. But no, I've not tried to do a round-robin of poorly written literature, amusing as that sounds."
Alastor's gaze fixed itself on Rene, a distinct draw of cold hunger within it - though he would not be so uncouth as to whet his appetite so readily on someone he might consider a decent acquaintance.
Friend was far too strong a word for him in general.
"Is that something you are offering, or are you simply spitballing ideas?"
▹@letsdrinktotruelove said: "By what measure of 'good' are you looking for in a book? And only three cigarettes? Hardly as if you have to watch your health."
"One that will hold my attention long enough to be marginally satisfying without placing any unnecessary expectation on me to finish the thing."
He might not be entirely obfuscating his true meaning, but he is a bit frustrated enough to not care, in the moment.
"And I say three because one must at least savor them, a little, and not look a fool while smoking them."
For the few who sent this in after the initial batch!
@venisontransmission ▹ I LOOOOOOVE FOSTERRRR. Our threads are always so darling and the way that he and Hartfelt get each other is so important to me. They have their differences but they're also very similar in nature to the point where their interactions give me life. I think they both have a capacity for deeper conversation, and the way that you write Foster's internal thought processes give me a lot of inspiration for my own writing too. He's also silly in the best ways and I think they should KISS MORE SMOOCH SMOOCH.
@ganglymask ▹ The way you portray Gangle is super interesting and nuanced! I enjoy reading the depth of her emotions that you spell out in a lot of different ways. She's got a lot of potential for getting either better at managing her emotions or worse, depending on who she interacts with and how, but I think there's a lot of capacity for evolution in her development, and I enjoy seeing where she and Alastor end up in their threads!
@disasterghaster ▹ If anyone wants to play with a very complex, lore and story-heavy OC, I almost always recommend Devang. The way that you put together her background, abilities, and personality into so many different threads, both serious and fun really tells everyone how much work you've put into developing her over so many years. You bring a super unique perspective to an ages-old character who's been through so much and I love to see how she reacts to different types of characters over time. Writing with you is always fun and tbh I'm loving our threads with her and Alastor. I think they have a lot of similarities between them that could be fun to explore~
THANK Y'ALL for sending these in and I highly recommend following each of these people and those from my other post too!
Ethan hadn't as of yet ventured into Alastor's territory within the tower. His natural uncertainty of whether he was even allowed or not until invited by the man had him giving the area space previously. This time however he knew he was allowed here. This time he'd been invited.
Mismatched eyes took it all in, looking up and around, mainly to where he would expect cameras to be since the tower in general was full of them. Then he looked over the booths as he quietly padded his way further into the production area, tray in his hands.
On the tray were two covered plates and two coffees.
He offered a small smile when attention turned to him and bowed in response.
"Hope I'm not interrupting. I brought us Goulash with freshly baked crusty bread rolls. I hope that's okay..." He was a tad nervous he'd somehow picked the wrong choice, even though Alastor hadn't given him any specifications to meet aside from 'be here with food'.
Very rarely did the audio demon invite any of the other staff members who regularly trawled here or there amidst the tower's multitudinous floors in service of their own employer up and into his singular domain. It was an ominous mystery, to many, what awaited them in the rarely seen studio, and so Ethan would have to consider himself privileged in that way, to be very personally invited to join Alastor into what might amount to a rather casual bit of lunch.
Well. Before he was undoubtedly to be asked to perform some task or other which Alastor had yet to truly define.
"Goulash, eh?" He repeated, reaching to pluck one of the covers from the plates to inspect the dishes that the other had brought to him. He always did have a bit of a high expectation for the meals he was served in the tower - and this was no exception. But he had never known, in his quiet observation of Vox's closest assistant, the other to half-ass anything.
The meal was acceptable, and he returned the cover back before offering a nod.
"It'll do. Feel free to set it on that table over there." A gesture quickly followed to a small coffee table that was nestled in the center of a square arrangement of plush couches in black and red, their style matching the slightly dated aesthetic of the studio in which they sat. In the meantime, however, Alastor turned to direct his gaze to the others who remained caged within the glass booth, not needing to press a switch to communicate with them inside as he spoke:
"You're dismissed, for now. My feedback will be sent to you within three to five business days and no sooner. Go on."
He did not need to say much more before the hellborn were grasping at their instruments and quickly scrabbling out of there, bustled by Alastor's own few assistants who were quick to follow to leave both he and Ethan to themselves, for the moment. Alastor kept them well in hand, it seemed, with little need to shout or scream to get them to do what they needed to.
"Now!" He said, cheerfully, clapping his hands together once it was just he and Ethan once more and beckoning to one of the couches.

He's calculating and suspicious nearly the entire time Alastor monologued with his intentions. Vox balks slightly as his sides are patted feeling a combination of embarrassment and indignation at the implication. So he'd been mostly sedentary and relying predominantly on processed junk food for a cheap boost of serotonin in dire times, that didn't mean he was anything less than the lean, mean, sharp machine he was in previous eras!
"Are you calling me fat??" He couldn't help but trip into the very provocation Alastor had knowingly set up for him.
Okay, so maybe he'd let himself go a bit this past month, but it wasn't anything significant!
And... yeah, it was true, he'd not exactly demonstrated shyness before... Not after rolling Alastor's chair into his bedroom and in a mostly literal sense, swung his dick around to express dominance (since neither Al nor Val had been overly impressed with the figurative performance). He felt an tsunami's wave of regret and retrospective shame for his actions now that he was nothing more than a great, big, fat, loser, in Alastor's eyes. Who also apparently couldn't dress well.
"Wait you mean you want me to change right here?" This implication also sparked a hint of panic on Vox's part as he looked around the boutique in desperate search of a fitting room and coming up short. No employees, no curtain to hide behind, just Alastor and his knowing look.
"Uhhh-"
The only way to conceivably level the playing field was to take Alastor up on his offer. And Vox was so preoccupied with finding the perfect article of clothing to solve his predicament he forgot to feel any level of excitement by the prospects of what Alastor had just offered him. In another context he would have certainly realized how rare the opportunity that had just been thrust upon him actually was.
"Fuck, I don't know?" he scanned the store for something to wear. Then his eyes skittered to the shirt. It was rather simple but... Something that had grown oddly popular in his own era on Earth. One of those striped button up bowling shirts, with a frocket on the front. Oh, actually he really wanted to see Al in one of these. It was on just the right side of tacky (at least in Vox's opinion) and just whimsical enough to possibly get the greenlight on Alastor's side of things. Besides there was a whole hipster fashion counter-culture to back it up as a reasonable option to wear outside the bowling context.
"Hey look, this one's even in your colors," he took it off the rack trying to seem casual about it. "Red and black."
Now it was his turn to hold it up near Alastor's body, not actually touching him at any point, but squinting in feigned analytics.
"I never said that," Alastor chimed without missing a beat, not permitting the other to get a bead on any one specific teasing insult by means of implication that he could possibly slather on at the moment. That Vox was not entirely gaunt was actually a benefit, but the radio demon would never pass up an opportunity to poke and prod at specific insecurities to encourage the other to locate his ego once again. Alastor had never been a man to overly enjoy the company of someone piteous and sad.
It might very well come back to bite him, but he had always run the risk when it came to ensuring that things were just as he preferred them to be. Perhaps Vox was not at the height of his power anymore - but that did not mean he had to subject himself to such poor personal care and presentation. The radio demon would not associate with anything less.
"What, do you have a problem with that?" He asked casually, glancing at the other with a bit of a dull stare as Vox seemed to be a bit uncertain as to what he was asking. "There's no one else in here. Are you afraid they'll see something they should not?" More than they had already seen of Vox's foolishness in front of all of Hell, anyway? It seemed like much less of a deal.
His attention, however, was pulled down to the shirt that Vox seemed to pluck out for him, reaching to take it as it was held out to eye it with some significant scrutiny.
"This is so painfully fifties of you."
Alastor did not necessarily think it looked heinous - but certainly beyond his general time, testing the fabric between his claws before giving a small exhale.
"I suppose."
No one ever said he had to be gracious about this - the graciousness was permitting Vox to do it in the first place, distracted from staring at the other's efforts to change into his outfit by preoccupying himself with beginning to undo the buttons of his own shirt.
This was not a thing he typically did in public - but he could not expect Vox to do something he was not willing to do himself.
"Don't dally. Put those on," he said, turning to the side as he began to expose the fluff and fur that hid beneath his layers, his still mending holy wound hidden among it. It had not exactly been treated nicely prior to his stint with Vox - and bothered him even now. But he would not complain about it, eventually shrugging his coat and shirt to gently drape over a nearby rack.
Though he typically would be much more aware of the exposure of a rather disgusting looking branded scar emblazoned over the full expanse of his back, he was not thinking much about it in the moment. It had not hurt or burned him in the last few weeks, and it was easy to discount it as an issue, the massive upside-down Pentagram scarification evident to anyone who even caught a glimpse of his spine. But it was quick to be again hidden beneath the silly striped bowling-style shirt that Alastor pulled on soon after, taking a moment to give it a tuck and then assessing it with a further squint.
"Mm. Not sold on this."
Mostly talking to himself, he did not think Vox to particularly care.
Light, fluffy joy tickles the inside of his chest, much like those velvety ears that the other sports. Finally feeling the tightly-wound stress in his body release gently. Somehow it lifts weight from him as he allows himself just to sink. This was the rest he’d forgotten how to feel.
Sometimes it almost made Angel find worth when he was useful, when he was The Favorite, when he was the best. Being too valuable was something that had simultaneously kept him afloat and beaten him down. Both made his worth unconditional and highly dependent all at once. Right here, there was nothing pressuring him. Not even a condition for the future. There simply just was. Just like them, allowed merely to exist as plainly as time and its passage. A plan that can be made, a date that can be set, simply because there will be a time for it to come.
“I’ll hold ya to it.” Remarkably, his tone feels brighter, even more alive than before. He was looking forward to a future that he could believe in. A date, some more time, some nice treat without the fear of reprimand and pain. The complexities and tension of today would be able to pass. That was something he could hold onto.
“At least you can accept that I’m a dashin’ addition to yer usual ensemble.” Truthfully, he’d had to have that realization a few times about Alastor’s vision. Sometimes he just forgets because of just how well he coordinates himself, and other times he catches himself wondering over items or scenery and how Alastor might like them in his point of view. “You look pretty good in whites and pinks.” He agrees, letting an arm drift to cradle beneath his head. A nice scarf indeed.
Maybe there would be a time, a day where Alastor could be leant such a thing. He knew people made things like that- glasses and such to allow color to be taken in. But that didn’t stop more morbid and childish ideas from coming into his head. Unsure that Hell would really be so whimsical, but not entirely convinced to rule it out, he thinks on it literally. And thinks it may be silly enough to earn a laugh.
“I suppose you can try em out when the time comes. Havin’ my eyes, you’d be able to see that for sure! They’d still match ya pretty well too.” His head tilts, as if it needed to get a particular angle to think. “If that’s tha case though, I guess I’d still need to tell ya how gorgeous your eyes are. I got no problem with bein’ yer eyes. That’s just another way to say I’m lookin’ out for ya!”
There is significant satisfaction in how Angel's tone lifts, no doubt a side effect of the comfortable arrangement that reminds him of their times prior to this. Ironically, there have been precious few times when Alastor has ever found himself to feel particularly pressured when in Angel Dust's presence - and the times that he has, it has only ever been self imposed. For the moment, he is easy going, his limbs slackening a bit on their hold as he rests himself back, permitting the other to nestle where he so pleases. There is warmth between them, and familiarity. A safety, too, even if it is not long for the world.
Like a reptile basking beneath the light of the sun, Alastor can only hope to soak up the rays of Angel's smile as long as they remain here, in this place, free of outside expectation.
He cannot help, however, as his ears dip back to press against his hair at the other's compliment, not wholly accustomed to such nice things being spoken about him, and certainly not about his eyes which he assumes have only ever been filled with the cold promise of death rather than anything significantly warm or suited for such sweet words. His mouth opens and then closes, clearing his throat in some mild embarrassment.
It's not that it's unwanted - but Alastor is simply not prepared for the response within him that such things elicit.
"Do you often say such things to people?" He dares to ask, glancing at the other sidelong. Perhaps it is not true suspicion, having built up some significant amount of trust between them over the last months and days - but what else he is to say?
"Pun aside, I mean."
That, he expects.
"Because I will feel awfully silly if I decide to take stock in something that you've told many others before now." And perhaps that is the core of it. He is not certain of its sincerity, even now. But despite that, he is not pulling away or otherwise looking to sully the moment between them, one of his hands reaching to find Angel's to fiddle claws with the other's much more slender, less imposing digits.
