today in “pete/gary sucks,” if you see nothing wrong with shipping gary with someone who mocked him for needing to be on meds and who might have contributed to gary’s decision to go off of his meds, you’re an ass. speaking as someone who has a family member who refuses to take his medication despite sorely needing it solely because of the stigma attached to it and because he’s afraid of being looked down on by people like pete, go fuck yourself. sincerely. gary has a shit upbringing (see: all the gossip around town about his parents and every last one of mr. smith’s lines), a shit psychiatrist (see: dr. bambillo), unchecked mental health issues, and is unmedicated. what’s pete’s excuse for being a dick?

I’m coming out of the woodworks to answer these for you. Hello!

Firstly, in my personal experience, I don’t think Gary/Pete is popular. In fact, I stopped writing it for a long time because people were vocally critical of the pairing and even when I returned to writing it for my own pleasure, people interacted with my writing significantly less than they did any other pairing I’d written for the fandom (which in such a small fandom, equaled to be almost not at all.)

I would say that a majority of the people who like the pairing, like it because it’s toxic at its canon core. They like that Gary is mean to Pete. I don’t know why. I had my own personal reasons why that appealed to me at fourteen/fifteen/sixteen but I’ve since come to terms with how incredibly unhealthy that is so I don’t really find it a good reason when it’s offered by other people.

I also don’t think the ship has changed much other than maybe people are more receptive to seeing it played out in a much healthier way but you still have people who disagree with the ship and people who enjoy it as a toxic relationship.

I’m not really an expert on the matter; I stopped reading Bully fic around the time that I started writing it because I didn’t like the way characterization was handled. And I haven’t been actively interacting with Bully content for a few months now so I don’t know what’s hot on the Gary/Pete scene.

I can say that the way I write the pairing has changed over the years but that mostly comes from me connecting to Gary and allowing him to grow as I grew and the connection the pairing has with my Pete.

As for my favorite canon Gary/Pete moment, I don’t really hold a lot of positive feelings towards the story of Bully anymore but I still really love the “glitch” that causes them to hold hands in the winter in free roam.

The bully Halloween mission

My head canon is Gary picked out jimmy’s costume, and when he put everything on he was like “uh…ok.” but Gary got up and was like “your missing something, moron.” And made Jimmy sit on the bed and Gary painted his face for him.

also i know we’re all about self-inserting into petey so we can be vicariously fucked by gary smith in this fandom but let’s stop pretending gary had a single shit to give about petey. he doesn’t. the beta halloween mission makes this transparently obvious. he spends time on an expensive costume for jimmy that includes contacts and requires him to paint jimmy’s face on for him while pete gets a frumpy bunny costume purposefully designed to make him the butt of every joke. from that point on, gary then uses pete as a scapegoat to reap the consequences of every prank he and jimmy pull off and straight up tells pete “there’s no room” when pete tries to hide with him and jimmy. he doesn’t even give a shit when pete fucks off to do whatever right before the big prank.

gary smith has stronger feelings for constantinos than he does pete, in that he actually even feels any degree of emotion towards constantinos at all. these are facts.

So I’ve been watching the Bully fandom for a while and there’s something I seriously need to get off my chest. The way the fandom sees Pete is incredibly skewed - he’s not some perfect angel; he’s not some innocent, pure soul who’s just too good for Bullworth. He is, by his own right, an asshole - just perhaps not as transparently as every other character in the game.

First off, Pete’s an opportunist. He doesn’t have any friends because he can’t find them, and if you evaluate his behavior, it’s really not hard to see why. He tries to suck up to everyone, and that means being awkwardly nice to them to their face while not being afraid to shittalk them behind their back if need be to earn brownie points with someone else he’s trying to buddy up with - or have we already forgotten the cutscene where it’s outright stated he said Jimmy must have been pretty stupid to get kicked out from so many schools? Sure, Gary might have goaded him into saying it; it doesn’t change the fact that he still said it. He even makes it clear later on that he doesn’t think highly of either Gary or Jimmy. To him, Gary is a snake, and Jimmy is a psychopath, but he doesn’t care if it means having two people around who will somewhat tolerate him.

Hence Pete not having any friends. He has no filter, no true loyalties (at the start), and he’ll latch onto anyone so long as they give him the slightest attention. If you don’t see how that could be off-putting to the student body of Bullworth and keep them from coming close to him, you’ve probably never had to meet someone like Pete before in your life. As Algie puts it, he’s weird - and that’s saying something coming from Algie. The incident with Jimmy undoubtedly isn’t the first time where he’s come off as an opportunist snake, talking shit about someone he’s outwardly friendly to in front of someone else he wants to impress. No one trusts someone like that. No one respects someone like that. Pete’s own actions - his own behaviors - rendered him an outcast at Bullworth; let’s stop pretending otherwise.

His lines in the game even imply as much, anyway. They’re nasty. They’re, at points, even worse than some of Gary’s worst lines. Let me just list a few examples.

“Why are we playing the special needs class?”

“Do we have to play with the girls’ team?”

“Even if you win, you’ll still be dumb.”

“Keep taking the medication!” (gee, I wonder why Gary bullies him)

“Your mom looks nice since she shaved off her beard.”

“Hey, I heard about your mom. She escaped from the zoo.”

“Do you understand sign language, dumbo?”

“You need plastic surgery.”

“At least I know who my dad is!”

“At least I’ve got opposable thumbs.”

“Whatever. You’re inbred!”

“Your parents are brother and sister!”

“You’ve got a genetic disorder.”

“Everyone says your mom walks the streets.”

“Here’s hoping someone gets badly hurt.”

And guess what? I’m not even a fifth of the way through his voice clips yet. So can we stop acting like Petey is some perfect angel whom everyone just mistreats for no reason already? It’s vastly simplifying his character, it’s turning him into a flat 2D cardboard into an actual well-rounded three-dimensional character, and frankly, it’s just irritating to see. He’s a dick. Practically everyone at Bullworth is. Let’s stop pretending otherwise, or that he wouldn’t have just as easily latched onto someone other than Jimmy if he thought he could worm his way into their good graces.
