“Why would they? Some part of my dad thinks it was my fault. He wouldn’t even look at me when he found out. It took a while for our relationship to get back to a semblance of normal. Everyone else…I don’t know.” Lura found herself wrapping her arms around Raf. She felt closer to him now that he knew everything. Lu tried not to cry but soon found herself sobbing. In an emotional situation like this what else was there to do?
“Because it wasn’t your fault. I can beat up your dad if you like.” Chuckling as he brushed his hand through her hair. “It’s okay.” Gross expressions of emotions was never his thing, but with Lura and her confession he felt an odd mixture of anger and deep sadness. It was weird to know this now, their relationship from this point was going to be completely changed.
“I’ve tried to convince myself of that for years. You’re the first person to ever tell me that it’s not my fault.” Everything from the past shaped who Lura was now. It caused her to take control of who she was and what she wanted to do with her body. She took the good things in with open arms. All the dark and dreary turned into nightmares and blaming herself. “Rafaele thank you. I just….it’s hard. When a series of unfortunate events happens to you and those around you it feels like you were the spark that ignited a fire.” As tears threatened to fall from her eyes she laughed. “Oh hell no. This is not happening. I’m so sorry you have to witness this mess.”
He couldn’t even begin to fathom why, let alone how someone had let her believe that for so long. For a moment he was angry at her parents, and at her friends but soon realised that the anger was too late and pointless because there was nothing he could do about the situation. He had found out too late and was now dealing with the aftermath. “It’s fucked up that no one else has told you that, especially when you needed to hear it the most.” Squeezing her hand, he wrapped his arms around her. “It’s okay.”
“He’s dead now so that’s a relief.” Raf was being protective over Lura. Which she found nice but it was weird at the same time. She didn’t think that their friendship had reached that level yet. Lu looked up at him. It was moments like this that made her want to cry but doing so in front of him would be awkward. She felt like neither of them were ready for that to happen. “I was young and an easy target for sick assholes like him. Little upper east side girl hanging out in a place she didn’t belong. I know the action itself wasn’t my fault. I just can’t help but think about the fact that my whole fucked up past could have been prevented had I not wanted something other than what I had which was pretty much everything. There are things that I couldn’t control but the rest is my fault.”
Rarely was Raf happy to find out someone was dead, and it was only in exceptions like this that he was. “None of this is your fault.” he shook his head, refusing to believe, let alone accept the words coming out of her mouth. “It was all on him, you shouldn’t have to regret wanting something, or doing something because of some creep.” When Raf asked that question, in all honesty he had expected her to say that she had a bad break up, or someone cheated on her. He didn’t expect to hear this in a million years. “You can’t blame yourself like that, you just can’t Lura.”
Lura looked down at her hands. This is the first time she has told her story. To anyone outside of the situation that is. Letting it spill out like that was like talking to an old friend. It was warm and safe and she felt like Raf knew her well enough that she could tell him. But now the gravity of what she told him had set in. She had come to terms with what happened a while ago but telling the story was something different. Her hands shook and she refused to look him in the eye. Not out of shame or embarrassment but out of feeling too exposed at this moment. “Yeah it was back then. I told my parents and other people. My father had everything lined up to be dealt with legally. It was too late though. He wound up in the hospital on life support about two weeks after I spoke up.” Her past was a thing of nightmares. Deep down Lura felt like it was all her fault. If she had not gone out searching for something then she would still be In New York City living an innocent an privileged life.
“Good. Because for a second there, I thought I was going to have to call up my cousins in New York.” Unclenching his own hands, he reached forward and held Lura’s. He could only imagine how it felt for her to have to go through that shit, and then have to carry it around like a heavy bag that she just couldn’t put down. Taking one of his hands out of Lura’s he rested it on the side of her face, and brushed his thumb against her cheekbone. “It’s not your fault, what happened, you know that right?” He’d only been this kind of affectionate with two other people, he for some reason felt like he wasn’t capable of it and it was moments like this that reminded him that he really was.
Rafaele the psychologist. My parents have nothing to do with my issues because it’s only now that they are having issues. I guess my start into the whole relationshipness wasn’t exactly ideal. Well I don’t guess. It was…horrific. Haven introduced me to a guy. Of course I liked him because he had a bad boy flair but was charming and kind what seemed like loving. We got together and I liked him a lot but he wanted…things that I was not ready for at the time. So he took them and left me to dry. It was only a few times before I told someone. Ever since then I analyze people and easily find what they are missing. When I see that quality in someone else then they become somewhat useless until I have strong feelings for them. Which is very rare. That first encounter scarred me and all the others just didn’t work out. So um yeah…yay Crivelli history?
“Just perceptive, that’s all.” And all of a sudden the boy went from a calm and cool demeanour to one that very, very annoyed. Although the shift in his emotional state wasn’t a physically obvious one, however his mouth stretched into a thin line and he clenched his fists. Regaining a little bit of composure, his voice was shaking, but only slightly. “And this is back when you were in New York, yeah?” If it happened here in Heffes, then he was going to make it his personal mission to make sure the guy wasn’t breathing without tubes by the end of the night. “And you told the cops or something right? Your parents? That asshole got what he deserved right?”
*recognizes that im feeling genuine human emotion* ok, troubling
I don’t have much of a filter with you so go for it.
It’s hard for you to commit in a relationship obviously, it also kind of seems like you’re scared of err... hmm I don’t really know how to put it... probably emotional intimacy is the best way but that sounds corny as shit. Anyway, I was curious to know - did someone do that to you, or did you just grow up never seeing a good relationship or was it both?
Well I am a taken woman with another guy cooking me dinner and doing inappropriate things.
If I don’t completely give into you does that still count as somewhat cheating?
[Pulling away and rolling his eyes] Can I ask you a personal question? It’s not really personal, but I guess the answer could be more personal than the question I ask.
I care about what I mean to the world. There’s a difference, but you probably don’t get it. [Frowns and furrows her eyebrows with confusion] What do you mean? It does mean I’m the favorite. [Pushing his hand away] Sure, sure. So you’re not going to tell me what the surprise is, at all?
I’m not a looking into the future kind of person if you haven’t already guessed. [Smirking] Just ask mama, you’ll see that I’m the favourite real quick. [Shrugging] You really wanna know? It won’t be a surprise then.
