odd to be experiencing the most profoundly meaningful, intellectually clarifying week of life in my weird world while also becoming conscious that i'm undergoing some kind of third puberty. i don't know how well i'm engaging but there is such an intense concentration of energy and i feel like a freak every day but also more normal (adjustment).
today's morning lesson,
sometimes selfishness, care/mutuality/reciprocity, and exploitation all occur in the same action, and that's ok.
(interpretation depends on the level of analysis. we experience it volunteering at a food bank (giving back, purpose in labor, notion of doing good, feminized labor/women's "free time", reinforced sexism, upholding an institution that's necessitated by neoliberal artificial scarcity); as phd students (curiosity, pursuit of self-fulfillment, "i don't know what else to do", devotion of oneself, being stretched thin, institutional demands and constraints, structural financial struggle); as people in relationship to others (giving, taking, receiving, sharing, requests, gifts, knowledge, limitations, incompleteness, indebtedness, acceptance))
A healthy dose of positivism does a discipline good

two sheep moms gave birth each to a set of twins, one black and one white each. shelby and a friend had these yellow plastic handles - lamb briefcases - and the plan was to pick up the babies and move them over to the cabin area to roam free a little and to be celebrated. shashi had called it something like a blessing ceremony.
four people carried four lambs, keeping them in sight of their mothers, and set them down around the fire pit. they explored and poked around the cabins brush, some of course were most attracted to the parking lot. one of the sheep was leaving her own (assumed) babies and chasing after the others, bleating. it seems no one could really know whose children were whose.
sam was nervous about getting caught with the sheep "not under control" so he ran back and grabbed the electric fencing. we all set up around the fire. sam said some words, so did sasha and ray and others. then he read thomas berry's essay on motherhood, which describes the experience of having heifers give birth on the farm, and the ways that humans are regularly outsmarted by nature's other instincts, the way we prepare and anticipate and try to control but ultimately the mother is the master. and the position of the man who is incapable of mothering himself, gaining the experience in working with mothering animals, in learning by witnessing and supporting. we check on the cows all night but they never calf until daybreak. sam said the lambs had just arrived, no need for intervention, sometime after 430 or likely just before 615 am. fresh out of the womb they were goo and bones on the floor. one pair, then two more a couple days later. the younger white one was so small and boney they weren't sure if it was alive or would live, but it doubled in size in a day or so just off milk. the marvel of life.
class is going well. today he started by asking if oral sex is economic, it was a thought exercise contending with different definitions of economy, formalist vs. substantivist arguments. i don't know why it had to be oral in particular. i guess he was just thinking about it.
i've been sleeping so heavy this week and not really getting myself organized or doing anything by way of work that i said i would. but it doesn't 'seem like any one else is this week either. there are bigger things than us going on.
