Barda

He was a palace guard when the shadow Lord took over Deltora and the king fled the castle. Years later, a young boy named Jord goes on a quest to drive away the shadow Lord and retake the land. For safety, a scruffy man named Barda accompanies him on the journey.

So basically, Barda is the voice of reason who is on taking care of two teenagers while on a quest to save the land (another character joins the group later).

In conclusion, he is the older man and voice of reason in the group, making him very dilfy.

look, i know we need him for the plot, but I hate Dain. I don't understand what went wrong - the rest of the Deltora characters are at least a little likeable, and the actual HEIR (big surprise there, it's in his name) who all this is FOR is this...weird meandering nobody? I guess he's pretty similar to Lief, but you can only have one everyman. Ugh...
