Tips for Reading Tarot
Reading tarot by just looking at the cards associated meaning is a perfectly great way of doing readings, but there are a few ways you can add a bit more meaning to your cards. Most of these require recognizing patterns among the cards, as well as looking at the imagery in the cards. This gives you a bit more meaning, while still providing a bit more leniency, since you now have a wider variety of possible answers
Suits
Pay attention to the suits of the cards pulled- each has their own significance. The easiest way to remember it is that each suit is associated with an element: pentacles- earth, chalices- water, swords- air, wands- fire. Pentacles usually deal with wealth and stability. Chalices usually deal with emotions and relationships. Swords usually deal with communication and ideas. Swords usually deal with passion and creativity. Pentacles and chalices have more feminine energy, while swords and wands have more masculine energy. You can also associate the suits to zodiac signs in their element (Earth- Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. Water- Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. Air- Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Fire- Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)
Numerology
Numbers have their individual meanings. Pay attention to any repeating numbers, multiples of numbers (ex. 3, 6, 9- multiples of 3), and any other patterns the numbers make. Are the numbers growing? Decreasing? Numbers have their own meanings, and can provide useful insight. For example, 1 can mean new beginnings, 2 can mean relationships, et cetera. Over time, you might notice other patterns and assign your own meanings to numbers, or become more attached to one meaning over another. For example, in personal or relationship readings, I personally associate 3 with platonic feelings
Colours
Like numbers, colours also have their own meanings. Pay attention to the colours in your cards. Of course, this works better with larger spreads, but it still applies when using one card. In larger spreads, ask yourself; Are there any colours that are showing up a lot? Is the colour scheme getting lighter or darker? Once you notice something, ask yourself how that message correlates with your question
Imagery
Imagery is one of the most important, if not the most important, tool used to convey messages in tarot cards. Look at the people and objects in the cards. How does the person interact with their surroundings? How are they acting toward other people? How is the person feeling? What objects stand out to you? These are just a few of the many questions you can ask yourself. The most important things to pay attention to are how people and objects interact with each other and the symbolism of objects and animals in the scene
