The joys of a June morn rival the delights of the evening. Warbling sparrows announce the dawn as we are lured from our nests by the aroma of tea and jam-smeared toast. Azure morning glories are heaped upon whitewashed wooden fences while diamond dewdrops glisten on lacy webs spun by sleepless spiders. Wicker picnic hampers harbour sharp cheese and lattice-top cherry pies nestled in crimson checkered cloths. Fresh farmers’ market produce is supplemented by sun-ripened homegrown tomatoes that flourish in old bourbon barrels. The whiff of a windowsill geranium and pungent marigolds transports us to garden nursery aisles as we tagged along behind our green-thumbed grandmothers. That perennial place between May and September bestows everything calm and carefree. May your summer be abundant with bouquets of fresh mint and moments as sweet as your tea.
