"So how's your book so far?"
Skies are clear, the sun is shining, it's hot outside—the perfect beach day.
You lie on a plush towel facing the water, new book in hand, sunglasses on the top of your head. You find yourself splitting your attention between your friend tanning next to you and the gorgeous lifeguard walking along the beach.
It's hard not to notice the way his bright red sleeveless tank matches the flush on his cheeks or the tone of his arms as he jogs along the shoreline. And especially the way he brushes his wet hair out of his face—It's so…
Addicting.
"Hello, welcome to earth." Stella waves her polished hand in front of your face.
"Huh, what—yeah it's so good," you say mindlessly, your gaze being nowhere near the book.
"How far along are you?" she gives a knowing laugh.
You look down at the printed pages, walls of text stare at you. You blink a couple times, but the book still says chapter one—really? The heading spreads across the page, bold, obvious.
"We're making progress," you smile.
"Are you sure because you've been staring at that lifeguard for the past ten minutes."
"No, I have not!"
"Oh, but yes you have."
You look around for a moment, almost whipping the sunglasses off your head. It's getting harder to hide your smile that's about to burst.
"He's so cute don't you think?" you blurt.
"Go talk to him!"
"But how? He's working and a different girl walks up to him every three seconds."
She gives you that smile, the one she gives when she's plotting. She reaches into her beach bag, pulling out her car keys. She waves them in your face, the various keychains jingling against each other.
"You want to run me over? I mean I guess that would get his attention—"
"No! Sometimes I worry about you girl." She rolls her eyes playfully. "Just say you lost your keys—it’s valuable so he'll have to help!"
"I guess drowning for some CPR isn't ethical," you huff.
"Definitely not!" she says, tucking the keys into the back pocket of your jean shorts. "Just drop them in the sand after you're done talking to him—number secured!"
"See this is why I love you."
"Go get your baywatch moment," she giggles.
…
"Excuse me."
He's standing near the watch tower where some other lifeguards are, it's hard to miss that shade of red. He fidgets with the whistle around his neck as he scouts out for any potential dangers.
He looks better up close, they all do. What are they feeding these lifeguards?
His hair is slicked back—he's been running his hands through it a lot. You can't gauge where he's looking since his eyes are covered with sunglasses. He simply nods.
Great, one of those chill™ ones
"Hi, so I lost my keys—could you help me, please?"
"Sure, I'll go and grab the metal detector from the tower."
You're taken aback for a moment—was it really that easy? He doesn't waste any time, quickly jogging over to the watch tower to grab the device. He moves rather skillfully in the dunes of sand. Impressive.
"So where did you last see it?"
"Like over there." You point to the opposite end of the beach.
"You’ve been walking lots?"
"I just go where the wind takes me," you smile.
"Okay I'll scan over here and send a report to some of my coworkers—any specific keychain colours?"
So serious.
"There's like…a pink frilly thing on it." You try your best to visualize Stella's keys, not that it mattered. You remember the feeling of the keys in your pocket—you'll have to walk behind him.
He nods, calling out a code in his walkie talkie. Some feedback comes through, but you can't make out exactly what they're saying. Must be some sort of lifeguard jargon.
Before you begin the hunt for the 'keys' you look back at Stella, she gives you a tiny applause.
The beach is getting more crowded, there's as many people in the water as on the sand. The line up for ice cream is getting longer, you could use some—why is it so hot? Maybe you should have pretended to drown.
The lifeguard doesn't say much, focused as he scans along the sand. It's hard not to notice the feeling of people watching you as you pass by. Most definitely looking at him.
"So…" You look over to his name tag "Keonho!"
You think you said that a little too loud but no one noticed, well except him. He looks up at you, quiet, anticipating.
"Sorry, did I scare you? Anyway I was just wondering if you've been doing this for long?"
"Just the summers since I was fifteen," he shrugs, looking back down to the sand.
"Wow you must be super qualified—do you swim too, like competitively?"
"Yeah, I do," he stops for a moment, the metal detector picking something up. When he brushes over the sand it's just the lid of a bottle. He continues walking.
"Cool—I don't know much about swimming but yeah that's cool." Again, he doesn't respond. "Not much of a talker?"
"I'm just focused—sorry."
"No, it's fine! I can get chatty sometimes."
"That's good."
"Hm?"
"Like being able to carry a conversation—it's attractive."
"You think?"
You suddenly notice how hard it is to walk—could it be the sand or his words? Nope, definitely the sand.
"Yeah," he sways the metal detector side to side, covering more area. "Do you come to the beach often?"
"No, not really—my friend invited me out today. Should I come more often?"
"It's up to you but Mondays and Thursdays are the least busy."
"Good to know—any other beach tips I should know."
"I work all days except Friday and Sunday—summer practices."
"Good to know," you smile.
The metal detector picks up a few more items—bracelets, earrings, coins, a nail clipper. You're starting to feel a little bad with the whole misleading thing, especially when he seems so determined to find the keys.
The conversation slows down—you don't know what else to say. Besides, the beach is filled with sounds of splashing water and ongoing conversations.
You sneak a few glances at him which is only fair since he's been very obviously sneaking some glances at you. When your eyes meet, he's the first to look away.
"Did you know they give out free ice cream near closing?"
"Liar!"
"Then tell me why I've tried all the ice cream flavours here."
"Keonho, you can't blow your entire paycheck on ice cream," you laugh, so does he.
You tilt your face toward the sun, enjoying the brief silence between conversations.
"So uh, do you go to school around here?"
"That's not related to the keys, is it?" you tease.
He looks away. "Yeah you're right."
You smile. "No, but I do plan on spending more summers here."
"You should—like it's really nice here, the weather and stuff," he nods. "Is this where you lost the keys?"
You arrive at what you're guessing is the spot you pointed at twenty minutes ago. It's less crowded over here but louder with the jetskis past the orange buoys.
"Huh—oh yes, it's got to be somewhere around here." You want to cringe at your poor acting skills.
He scans the area more meticulously this time, that tiny bit of guilt in you begins to seep up. But you let him search for a moment, it's cute how motivated he is.
"Sorry if I've been…well awkward," he says.
"What? No, you haven't been, at all. I just coined you to be one of those nonchalant guys."
"I'm not like that at all—I just can't talk to girls," he lets out a nervous chuckle.
"But you have been…on the beach."
"You've been watching me?"
"You've been standing in front of my eyeline."
He laughs, "Well I don't have crushes on those girls." His cheeks look more flushed than before.
Showtime.
"Ah, really?" you smile, discreetly pulling the keys out of the pocket and dropping them on the sand behind you, creating a jingling sound. Stella and her keychains. "Oh what's that?"
"I saw all of that," he smiles.
You shrug. "In my defense it worked."
"What worked?"
"Getting your attention."
"Guess it did."
You stand there for a moment, a much needed breeze flows along the shoreline. The scents of the beach are becoming more evident: seawater, fries, sunscreen. He runs a hand through his hair, looking in your direction. Thank god for that breeze or you might have melted.
Oh fuck it.
"Could I maybe get your number?" You start. "Please."
"Sure, my work phone number is 911 and—"
"Dude," you laugh.
"Okay," he gives you a cheeky grin, reaching his hand out for your phone. You pull it out of your other jean pocket, no hesitation.
"You know, I can't believe you made me ask you. I did just get you out of your shift…well temporarily."
"Messing with a lifeguard is a violation," he jokes.
"No it is not!"
"But, I'll let you go because you're pretty."
The words seem to surprise even him.
"I mean—"
"Too late," you grin.

—౨ৎ Watching your boyfriend flirt with hundreds of girls is a lot harder in person. You go to Keonho’s fansign just wanting to see him. Unfortunately, jealousy has other plans.

Being with Ahn Keonho was like a dream come true. He brought you into his fast paced and sometimes disorientating life. But it wasn't too bad—the thrill of it all.
The only downside is that it had to be kept a secret.
No matter how badly you wanted to hold his hand or kiss him you had to wait to be in a private private space, somewhere secure. Hell you couldn't even stand near him without potentially hurting his career.
Of course you knew the risks. But all the happy and fun moments negated that.
It's only at times like these when you disdain the restrictions of your relationship.
It's been getting harder to get some free time alone with Keonho during comeback season. The usual late evenings you spent together are replaced with a packed schedule and constant fatigue. The best you'll get is a 'goodnight' or 'goodmorning' text.
That's why you're here at the fansign.
You knew it was an awkward place to be at—hes at work, its public, and hes flirting with an array of girls. It didn't sound too bad, plus you couldn't help yourself. Only seeing him through a screen was tiring.
It's at a bookstore this time, it's easier to stay inconspicuous compared to the usual event hall. There were almost as many people in line as there were in the bookstore itself. He sits at the center chair in the front, fidgeting with a pen while waiting for the event to start.
You see him glance up a few times, looking among the many shelves of coloured spines in the store. When your eyes meet you almost wave but you remember cameras and people are everywhere. He gives you a small smile instead, you do the same.
One of the staff members announces the rules for the fansign which you filter out. All you have to do is wait an hour and a half before it ends—at least you can browse through the books and stationery. Your attention is only piqued when you hear his voice through a quiet microphone.
He looks good, as always. Dark bangs parted along his hairline, fashionable yet comfortable looking clothes on, a smile from the heavens. You can't help but admire him, as so many others do. You're comforted with the fact that his eyes keep falling on you.
And then the fansign starts.
It's not good for you to look. But like a car accident on the highway, it's hard not to. You watch as he goes through the motions of conversation, complimenting outfits, signing albums, exchanging flirtatious remarks. The longer you look, the harder it gets to convince yourself that it isn't real.
He sure is great at his job.
There's something that feels so fundamentally unfair about not being able to be seen with him in public, yet he can flirt with everyone else.
Whatever, that's just the way things are. For now you'll distract yourself in the aisles of alphabetically labeled books—maybe they'll have some Needoh’s in stock or some cute pens.

Time passes by, the synopsis on the back of books begin to blur as you scavenge through every section: manga, lit fic, self-help, classics. Just thirty more minutes.
You catch yourself staring at the front often, like your brain is purposefully trying to upset you. A touch of hands, heart poses, laughs that come easy.
It's getting painful.
It's funny how the only section you haven't gone through is the romance one. It's not like you're avoiding it purposefully. You hesitate before going into the aisle, it's fine you need a distraction. Anything to replace the tightness in your chest.
As you skim through the books you recognize, you stop on one with an interesting cover. Dark blues and purple flowers are the background for a golden emblem. The book's about a forbidden romance set in a fantastical world. You hold it up for a moment rereading the synopsis.
A boy who's royalty, an ordinary girl. A love that his family disapproves of. Adventures. Hybrid creatures. A rebel group. You can't help but laugh at the joke the bookstore seems to be playing on you.
"That book is actually really good."
You didn't even notice somebody else was in the aisle with you. It's a guy who looks about your age, conventionally attractive—has one of those welcoming faces. He's not Keonho though. Your eyes dart from the stranger and to that familiar table in the front: jokes, compliments, hand holds.
Oh well.
"Oh really? Seems pretty interesting."
He stands a little closer, you don't move away. You can feel him taking subtle glances at you even though your eyes are glued to the book's cover.
"Theres a lot going on but the ending ties it up well—my little sister recommended it to me," he smiles.
"Hopefully her judgment is good—think I'll get it," you smile. "So what're you here for?"
It feels so wrong to continue this conversation. It's immature, embarrassing. But seeing him flirting and smiling from the corner of your eye is driving you insane. You need a distraction.
"My sister," he lets out a chuckle, low and smooth. "She's here for that fansign—I'm her designated driver."
"Ah, cool."
"Do you know them—Cortis?"
"Yeah, I like some of their songs—don't know much about them though."
"Same here—my sis is like my info bank." he starts. "She really likes the one that's sitting in the middle."
Yet another reminder that he's not exclusive to you. Selfishly you wish he was. If even for a day he could just be yours you'd take it.
"Nice."
He looks around for a bit, quickly scavenging for a new conversation topic. Fine, you'll do it for him. Keonho's gaze seems to fluctuate but you can't tell where it lands. Regardless, he has to redo a hand heart pose with a fan.
"So, are you from the city?"
"Yeah, yes," he says with relief, rubbing the back of his neck. "Grew up here—I love the city. I don't think I'll ever move unless I really have to. Oh uh what about you?"
Awkward yet charming. You're sure he's attracted many like that, you aren't one. But you're sure you could be as good an actor as Keonho.
"I love that! I wish I was from here but I'm still getting used to the traffic," you giggle, too loudly.
"Yeah, it definitely takes some time to get used to," he laughs.
A staff member taps his shoulder—asking him a question. He doesn't say much, just adjusts his chair and rubs his hand along the back of his neck. He's just tired—probably didn't sleep well.
"Hey, do you want to walk to the classics section with me? There's a book I want."
"Yeah, of course sure," he smiles, leading the way out of the aisle.
The classics section. The one closest to that table and the decreasing line. It's impulsive, you can't reason with your suggestion. But it's not going to hurt him, right? It'll just be for a moment and he's busy working anyway.
You continue the conversation with the boy, general questions answered vaguely but compensated by exaggerated laughter. There's nothing wrong with him, he's as nice as he seemed. But every word exchanged with him feels redundant, Keonho hasn't even noticed. Besides dropping a pen he looks completely unbothered. He mutters an apology to the fan in front of him while bending to grab it. When he straightens, his eyes look toward you immediately. They look away just as quickly.
He's a much better actor than you or he doesn't care.
"Seems like you're also into that guy in the middle."
"Huh?"
"You're staring at him," he laughs nervously.
"Oh—am I?" You shrug, cursing yourself for not being more inconspicuous.
You sway back and forth, holding the book in your hand—could this be any more awkward? He's not looking at you this time, pulling out his phone to check the time having caught on.
"The fansign is over anyway—uh I hope you enjoy that book," he exhales.
"Right—your sister's there, yeah."
"I better get going."
"Sorry," is all you can muster.
"No worries—have a good day."
How could Keonho be so convincing? Either he's been trained more than you thought or the lines of his work and after work personalities are blurred.
That's terrifying.
You can't see him right away, not until all the fans have left and employees are done cleaning. By then it should be safe. He texted you before the fansign to let you know there's a meeting room in the back you can talk in. He said he'll text you when he's ready.
That text doesn't come.
You wait around a little longer, maybe he's tired—he usually is after events.
There's a small olive coloured bench in the store. When you take a seat you're immediately relaxed, almost melting in the thin cushion. You hadn’t realized how long you’d been on your feet. Just a few more minutes, he'll turn up soon.
Minutes seem to turn into an eternity, he still hasn't texted you. The book stares back at you on your lap. You haven't decided if you want to go to the checkout yet. Once you decide you'll leave, yeah, just a few more minutes.
That is until you see a familiar licence plate on a blacked-out van drive past the store.
Tired, must be.
That dumb forbidden romance book ends on a random display table. It's only evidence of your guilt.

The sun's set two times since the fansign. Texts have been ignored, calls left unanswered.
You originally thought that something must've happened to his phone. No, he's updating on Weverse. No selfies though, just late night practice rooms with philosophical captions.
That's why you're here at his dorm. If he's not going to answer your messages, fine.
You knock on the door a couple times—your knuckles hurt. You hope you didn't scare anyone.
You don't expect the door to open right away, they have to look through the peephole and all. The pause is longer this time, hesitation. All the guys have seen you before—whats taking so long?
What are the odds that out of five members he's the one that answers—not that it matters.
He looks confused, scared even. Like you're a witch who randomly appeared on his front doorstep.
You don't say anything at first, you're waiting for him to say something. Although you think your logic is flawed—shouldn't the one knocking on the door speak first?
"Hey," he says eventually, curt and distant, like you've dragged him from sleep. He's still as beautiful as ever, even with his unstyled hair, his most casual attire, and bland expression.
He'd look better with a smile.
"Hey," you pause, trying to look inside the dorm, gauge if anyone else is there. The small crack of the door doesn't let you see much. "Can I come in?"
He stays silent, like he's still trying to process the words you said. "Just for a minute," you add.
"Uh sure—James is sleeping though."
"Oh okay—what about the other guys?" He opens the door wider, taking a step back from the door to let you in.
"They went out for dinner."
"Nice."
You take your shoes off at the entrance and line them up even though you aren't staying long. The usual spot on the couch you sit on is empty—you quickly fill that space. He trails behind you but he doesn't sit. Just stands off to the side.
"How have you—"
"What was that about?"
"Sorry?"
"At the fansign."
Just as you feared, it was the. Stupid, dumb, heat of the moment choice.. You didn't mean to hurt him, never in a million years would you ever want to do that. But he doesn't know—how could he?
"Keonho." You turn your body to face him, his eyes refuse to meet yours. "I'm so sorry. I just hated standing around and acting like I was nothing to you. It's no excuse at all but I just got so impulsive, I dont…."
"I hate that too. I really wish I could be open in public with you—I want it so bad. I wanted to walk up there and hold your hand right in front of him."
"Oh," you say, barely a whisper.
"Just seeing you with that other guy drove me insane, I couldn't focus on anything else—everyone at the fansign said I looked distracted."
"Sorry I shouldn't have been there—that was dumb of me."
"No please, I get it. I wanted to see you too but, I'm just worried about…"
"About…" you mirror.
"Like…did you like him?"
"Huh?" You can't hide the genuine shock that comes over your face, no, no, no. "No way of course not, I couldn't even convince him with my shitty acting—he even caught me looking at you."
"Oh, uhm—I should've known but I don't know. Looks can be so deceiving, can't they?" he shrugs, an awkward smile adorning his face.
"Yeah, that's so true."
He moves over to the couch, slowly sitting in the space beside you like he's testing the water. He takes a few quick glances at you, then a longer one. He pulls you in an embrace, one that relieves the tension in your shoulder. One that reminds you that none of this uncertainty exists when you're alone together.
"That was so immature of me to ghost you. I'm sorry," he says.
"It's okay, I fucked up too. Please talk to me though. I was so worried about you, us."
You feel his breaths along your shoulder become more regulated. His shoulder probably feels similar. The two of you sit there for a moment, completely still. Like you'll break each other if you move even a millimeter.
"Do you have to go right away?"
"I guess I could stay a little longer—not that you'd like me to go," you laugh.

i havent been on tiktok in a hot minute but i went on to go check it out and wowowoo 💔💔 firstly the formatting was so good i actually loved it so much between the diary entires, texts, insta stories AND JAMES' POV AT THE END what a way to wrap up a such an emotionally engaging story. in the context of the ending, im very impressed/satisfied with the route the creator decided to go with. as sad as it was, it very beautifully done and i can see how much thought they put into it!
the readers characterization was so good especially with the progression in her diary entires, shes such a standout to me. especially when i went back to read some parts the foreshadowing and changes in her character became more evident. i really love especially how martin juxtaposed her in his more optimistic and love-centric mentality. it was very cool to see how that began to shape her mindset for the better, especially in that dreaded last diary entry. so close 💔
such a tragic story but the themes of it were very real and beautiful: love and loss, isolation vs intimacy, trust vs mistrust, etc.
this was such a fun (yet emotional) sidequest!! im curious on your thoughts too/anyone else who sees this post! 🥰

i saw your reblog of ‘she’s kinda hot’ and honestly i literally got tearful that was some of the nicest feedback I’ve ever gotten for my writing. i loved how you noticed small details i incorporated into the fic, especially bc i tried to make sure the reader wasn’t too annoying 😭 and i tried so hard to make the dialogue as authentic as possible without it bordering on a cringe-fest so i’m so happy their bickering came off as whimsical as it did!

A/N: sorry for my sudden death, two words: ap week.
"Is this seat empty?"
He asks yet he pulls the empty chair from beside you anyway. He sits down as if he's entitled. Not waiting for an answer, of course.
You glance at him quickly, not caring if he saw your not-so inconspicuous eye roll. You go back to ignoring him. Maybe he'll leave if you keep pretending to jot something down in your notebook.
Eom Seonghyeon: school sweetheart, heavily fawned over, incredibly annoying. You'd think the attention he gets from everyone else would be enough, yet he still messes with you. Why should you have to play along to his whims? Especially when he's so painfully—
"New pen? Can I borrow it?"
Annoying.
You scoff under your breath, refusing to speak a word to him. If you do, he wins. You go through the motions of unzipping your pencil case and finding something else to write with since he took your favourite pen.
"Got any plans tonight?" he says, one arm resting on the table as he leans towards you. He's doing that annoying thing where he watches your every move, giving you no room to breathe. His gaze is so intense, you don't even need to look at him to feel it. It's annoying, suffocating, and makes you shy.
"Does it matter?"
"And she finally speaks!" You can hear that annoying smile that spreads across his face. "But, yeah it does matter," he continues as he twirls your sparkly pen between his fingers.
"Why? Our science project is finished."
Ah, the dreaded science project. While he did pull his weight at the last minute, it was like trying to pull teeth to get him to do anything. He’d talk about everything but the project. Do you want some snacks? Should I buy these shoes? Where's the bathroom?
"Do I only get to hang out with you when it's something school related?"
"Yes, actually."
"Well, this is school related and I really need your help doing it," his tone says it's something urgent, and if you hadn't already spent a painful week with him you'd have considered it. Eom Seonghyeon loved acting like everything was life or death. Maybe that’s why people liked him so much.
"I'm not doing any of your homework for you or helping you skip class."
"Damn," he mumbles, looking sad for a moment then chirping right back up again. "Well good thing it's nothing like that."
That's more worrying than anything. What could he possibly need from you that he couldn’t get from one of his jock friends or countless admirers?
He stops twirling the pen, stops talking. His gaze is now out the window. He's focusing on something trivial outside, biting his lip, testing your patience.
"You know that tteokbokki cart outside of school?"
"No, not like the one I walk by every morning."
"Just checking." he laughs, such an irritating and beautiful sound. "Want to go with me?"
Now you laugh, wanting to pull out your phone to check if it's April fool's day.
"What? I'm serious!"
"Did you get rejected by one of the girls on the dance team?" you laugh between your words.
"No!" he says a little too quickly, his lips curling into a cringe. "Nothing like that—I haven't even asked them."
"Right…" You're barely even paying attention to him at this point. Everything that comes out of his mouth is starting to sound like a joke.
"I'm serious—I'll even walk you home."
"You are not doing that."
"Okay, then" he laughs, throwing his hands up in surrender. "Tteobokki it is."
You sigh.
"I never said that."
"But think about it," he looks directly into your eyes, giving you that stupid smirk that seems to get everything. "It's on the way out…and I'll pay!"
You look away first, trying to focus on anything else but him—wow the pages of your notebook are so…white?
You need an excuse, anything, quick! Does the theatre department need some extra help? Or does your fish need walking—
"You're lucky I'm craving something savoury." Ugh, you want to blame your mouth for moving faster than your brain.
"Wait, never—"
"Cool I'll meet you in the foyer when school ends," he blurts, an all-knowing grin spreading across his face.
You can't tell if you're annoyed or satisfied with his quick interruption.
