VR workshop with Gert Wastyn

I drew a weird plant in Gravity Sketch with VR devices. Which was actually fun. The thing was, I think I didn't upload the right layer so this was the only thing I could find in the end. Still a lot to explore, including the technical part. To start by drawing instinctively in a 3D environment did help a lot. I can see if I can draw and at the same time, have knowledge about how 3D works, VR should be a super useful material to operate.

Exhibition and workshop public spaces Alexandra Krouwers + Kaja Renkas + Marieke Verbiesen

Making an AR gif for the 1-day-workshop. While I think the theme to make something from your country was a bit limited, I still tried to connect it with my research, which is the connection between things. Taiwan is like a shape of sweet potato, or a leaf on the sea (It's an island as well). And it can be transformed into many things. The leaf becomes eyes. The reflection turned into the smoke of incense. The smoke becomes cloud, and the incenses changed into chopsticks.

In the workshop with Marieke, we played with Makey-Makey, which was nice to know more about animation interfaces. She gave us a lot of examples about installations and expanded animation. I made the little doll on the right, which was squashed when going back home. I liked it even more afterwards.

Workshop Gert Wastyn and Guido Devadder

With the group we finished this work. Applying materials we could gather, the outcome was actually amazing! I enjoyed the combination of various textures. Films, yarns, seeds, aluminum foil. It gave me a feeling that we could actually use everything from our daily life to animate. The shadows were dramatic, in a good way! For installation, we placed a leaf beside the Vinyl player, which made a buzzing sound whenever you play it. Also, we settled a lot of leaves on the ground to surround this work, people need to go across those leaves and watch. It's like peeking something happened in the woods.

I have never done any installation before this one. It was like a starter to try out and I did enjoy it. To think about an piece not only in a visual way but also about how to experience it.

360 images

For me, to shoot a 360 photo, there should be something to play with- to set up the audience as another character. For example, imagine yourself a small person inside someone's mouth, an object inside a shopping bag....., or being observed by a giant, or observing the giant right besides her. Playing with perspectives was the funniest thing I could explore with 360 camera. I need more study to really know how to tell a story in a different way, while these small tries opened doors to different thinking methods.

FilmEU-RIT Expanded Memories workshop

Scratching on film. It was a nice experience to play with films. The upper one was playing at a regular speed, while the other was much slower. I prefer the later, which you can see the overlapping and glow among the lines. It did provide me a sense of fading memories, and they somehow connected, talking to each other by crossover.

I animate the tears on Doreen. Which was a nice try when firstly warm up with stopmotion and Dragonframe.

Some things that did not work

They are the few clips when I start the filming. It did not work in an interesting way though.

Though the section of orange could be interesting while it's too hard to slice it into smaller fragments. Which makes it somehow awkward. So it did not work. Also, it is too juicy which makes the table sticky.

Some other things to observe

Onion texture which I really like but the colour white is too hard to capture the details. Next time I would try to film it with some color paper underneath.

Cabbage sections are too complicated to observe. The movements are somehow disturbing as well.

Sometime it's not that easy to find the connections. While it's still a try to combine different materrials.

I enjoyed watching and observing the inside of paprika a lot. Film it from different angles and lighting to capture the vein-like texture.

Another example of mechanical thing combines with natural one. I found nature with stiff, artificial sound more effective than the other way round.

Funny to observe the section on paprika but not really work for my project though.

Some rotations I made with objects. Enjoyed the sense of exploration and opening things up. I like the texture inside paprika, and I probably will use it afterwards.

Screwing

I switch the sound of the two clips. Mechanical with broccoli, plant-like with the screw to create the harmony in disharmony.

To find the connection between things, I tried several methods to interpret. Sound, images, coherence... To really know how to do it, I still need to study the similarities and differences between objects more.

Paprika Coughing

Trying new ways to make a movement or sound stop. Using associations cannot make sense all the time. While the visual is interesting to me, I still need to think about the coherence.

Rooms inside the tomato move like dancing.

I found the colour red can be associated with many things.

Eager, juicy, vivid, emergency, life. In the later part, by overlapping the layers of tomato, it somehow becomes more intense. Which reminds me of the heart.

With sound, it can always tell a story behind it, and I really enjoy not telling too much but still leaving clues for the audience to explore. (For example, I could put heart-beats in the later part to show it's a heart while the info can be too much and lose the fun of imagination)

Disclosure

A piece I enjoy a lot. Firstly, I found the visual music(rhythm) inside the section of broccoli. While searching for the right audio-wise “music” with it, I applied the cutting sound. The funny thing is when we cut things, there’s always a pause between them. 

What if the music only exists when we proceed with cutting? And there’s literally nothing when there’s nothing?

Just like the film is paused when there’s no sound, everything makes sense in a weird way. For the audience, when finding the film is stopped, we suddenly notice that we are watching a film(picture). This kind of distraction and breaking structures is what I am seeking.

The notes(music) only exist when you are paying attention(proceeding with movement). Just like the world, this broccoli exists because you are existing and watching. Eventually, are we ourselves or are we the broccoli at this moment?
